Book Evaluation of the Effects of Asphalt Binder on the Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt at Intermediate Temperatures

Download or read book Evaluation of the Effects of Asphalt Binder on the Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt at Intermediate Temperatures written by Haifang Wen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asphalt binder is an essential component of asphaltic mixtures. The performance of an asphaltic mixture is directly related to mechanical characteristics of the binder. With the development of new material characterization methods for both asphalt binder and asphaltic mixture, there is a need to re-evaluate the relationship between the properties of binders and asphaltic mixtures such that a proper understanding and selection of an asphalt binder can be made to improve the performance of an asphaltic mixture. In this study, the effects of asphalt binder properties on asphaltic mixtures at intermediate temperatures were evaluated based on recent developments on material characterization methods for both binder and asphaltic mixture. Five asphalt binders and five asphalt mixtures containing these binders with one aggregate were tested. Four of the binders were based on a modification of a base binder with different techniques. Complex shear modulus and monotonic constant shear-rate tests were conducted on asphalt binders, whereas dynamic modulus and indirect tensile strength tests were conducted on the mixtures. The effects of modification techniques on the properties of asphalt binders and the relationships between the properties of binders and asphaltic mixtures were evaluated in this study.

Book Modeling and Design of Flexible Pavements and Materials

Download or read book Modeling and Design of Flexible Pavements and Materials written by Dallas N. Little and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook lays out the state of the art for modeling of asphalt concrete as the major structural component of flexible pavements. The text adopts a pedagogy in which a scientific approach, based on materials science and continuum mechanics, predicts the performance of any configuration of flexible roadways subjected to cyclic loadings. The authors incorporate state-of the-art computational mechanics to predict the evolution of material properties, stresses and strains, and roadway deterioration. Designed specifically for both students and practitioners, the book presents fundamentally complex concepts in a clear and concise way that aids the roadway design community to assimilate the tools for designing sustainable roadways using both traditional and innovative technologies.

Book Relationship Between Surface Free Energy and Total Work of Fracture of Asphalt Binder and Asphalt Binder aggregate Interfaces

Download or read book Relationship Between Surface Free Energy and Total Work of Fracture of Asphalt Binder and Asphalt Binder aggregate Interfaces written by Jonathan Embrey Howson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of asphalt mixtures depends on the properties of its constituent materials, mixture volumetrics, and external factors such as load and environment. An important material property that influences the performance of an asphalt mixture is the surface free energy of the asphalt binder and the aggregate. Surface free energy, which is a thermodynamic material property, is directly related to the adhesive bond energy between the asphalt binder and the aggregate as well as the cohesive bond energy of the asphalt binder. This thermodynamic material property has been successfully used to select asphalt binders and aggregates that have the necessary compatibility to form strong bonds and resist fracture. Surface free energy, being based on thermodynamics, assumes the asphalt binder is a brittle elastic material. In reality, the asphalt binder is not brittle and dissipates energy during loading and unloading. The total work of fracture is the culmination of all energy inputted into the sample to create two new surfaces of unit area and is dependent on the test geometry and testing conditions (e.g., temperature, loading rate, specimen size, etc.). The magnitude of the bond energy (either adhesive or cohesive) can be much smaller in magnitude when compared to the total work of fracture measured using mechanical tests (i.e., peel test, pull-off test, etc.). Despite the large difference in magnitude, there exists evidence in the literature supporting the use of the bond energy to characterize the resistance of composite systems to cohesive and/or adhesive failures. If the bond energy is to be recognized as a useful screening tool by the paving industry, the relationship between the bond energy and total work of fracture needs to be understood and verified. The effect of different types of modifications (addition of polymers, addition of anti-strip agents, and aging) on the surface free energy components of various asphalt binders was explored in order to understand how changes in the surface free energy components are related to the performance of the asphalt mixtures. After the asphalt binder-aggregate combination was explored, the next step was to study how the surface free energy of water was affected by contact with the asphalt binder-aggregate interface. Aggregates, which have a pH of greater than seven, will cause the pH of water that contacts them to increase. A change in the pH of the contacting water could indicate a change in its overall surface free energy, which might subsequently increase or decrease the water's moisture damage potential. With surface free energy fully explored, the total work of fracture was measured using pull-off tests for asphalt binder-aggregate combinations with known surface free energy components. In order to fully explore the relationship between bond energy and total work of fracture, temperature, loading rate, specimen geometry, and moisture content were varied in the experiments. The results of this work found that modifications made to the asphalt binder can have significant positive or negative effects on its surface free energy components and bond energy. Moreover, the results from the pull-off tests demonstrated that a relationship exists between bond energy (from surface free energy) and total work of fracture (from pull-off tests), and that surface free energy can be used to estimate the performance of asphalt binder-aggregate combinations.

Book Chemical Characterization of Asphalts Related to Their Performance

Download or read book Chemical Characterization of Asphalts Related to Their Performance written by William Howard Daly and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project the researchers studied a correlation between molecular structure and corresponding compositional analysis of asphalt binders of conventional hot mix asphalt mixtures (HMA) as well as mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and/or recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) with their cracking potential at intermediate temperature. The molecular size and structure of asphalt components of RAP and RAS undergo large changes during their exposure to environmental factors, which affects the physical properties imparted to their mixtures with conventional asphalt liquids. The composition of the mixtures prepared using a PG 70-22M binder was ascertained using thin layer chromatograpy/FID detection (Iatroscan), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The distribution of species by molecular mass as determined by deconvoluting gel permeation chromatographs, emphasizing in particular, the amount of asphaltenes as they are related to the age hardening of asphalt materials. The extent of sample aging is apparent from the carbonyl oxygen content from FTIR measurements of the mixtures. Fracture resistance of laboratory produced mixtures was assessed using the Semi Circular Bend Test (SCB) test procedure; a minimal value of 0.5 kJ/m2 was considered acceptable. Mixtures containing up to 5% RAS, 15% RAP and 15% RAP/5% RAS met the SCB standard. Molecular fractionation through GPC of mixtures containing RAS confirmed the presence of highly associated asphaltenes in greater concentrations than mixtures containing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). High concentrations of high molecular weight associated asphaltenes (mol wt > 20K Daltons) which are present in RAS samples decrease the fracture resistance of the asphalt mixtures. The use of recycling agents, Cyclogen-L, Hydrogreen, Asphalt Flux and Re-refined engine oil bottoms (REOB), did not reduce the concentration of the highly associated asphaltenes, further they failed to improve the cracking resistance of the asphalt mixtures evaluated in this study. However, the recycling agents effected quantitative extraction of the RAS asphalt component.
