Book Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study Oepss Data Book Volume 10 Air Augmented Rocket Afterburning

Download or read book Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study Oepss Data Book Volume 10 Air Augmented Rocket Afterburning written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was directed towards assessing viability and effectiveness of an air augmented ejector/rocket. Successful thrust augmentation could potentially reduce a multi-stage vehicle to a single stage-to-orbit vehicle (SSTO) and, thereby, eliminate the associated ground support facility infrastructure and ground processing required by the eliminated stage. The results of this preliminary study indicate that an air augmented ejector/rocket propulsion system is viable. However, uncertainties resulting from simplified approach and assumptions must be resolved by further investigations. Farhangi, Shahram and Trent, Donnie (Editor) Kennedy Space Center NAS10-11568...

Book Air Augmented Rocket Fixed Fuel Flow Combustion Characterization Program

Download or read book Air Augmented Rocket Fixed Fuel Flow Combustion Characterization Program written by Jerry L. Fields and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program demonstrated that reliable, consistent combustion efficiency data could be obtained independently at different facilities. The detailed combustion efficiency performance of two Boron loaded fuel rich propellants was mapped over an air-to-fuel ratio range from 10 to 40 and a ramburner air-only pressure range from 13 to 40 psia. Two highly loaded Boron propellants were used. Testing was conducted at three facilities. Six inch subscale hardware was utilized and a coaxial mixing configuration chosen. Data analysis procedures were refined and error sources (particularly fuel flow rate uncertainties) minimized. The averaged combustion efficiency data from all three facilities fell within the computed error bands, + or - 5.5 percent. Significant A/F dependence was found for combustion efficiency for the two propellants. The effect of fuel generator pressure on combustion efficiency was briefly investigated and found to be negligible. Finally, a propellant comparison was made and ARC 256A had generally better combustion efficiency performance and a higher theoretical heating value, leading to its selection as the superior propellant. Book Air Augmented Rocket Propellant Screening Facility

Download or read book Air Augmented Rocket Propellant Screening Facility written by Charles H. Hitchcock and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes the results of an Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory engineering development effort to design, fabricate and activate a laboratory-scale, direct-connect test facility. The facility, composed of a clean air supply system, a primary solid rocket combustor and a ramburner, is designed to support air-augmented rocket propellant development efforts. The versatile facility design allows variation in hardware configuration and propellant flow parameters to simulate a broad range of flight conditions, i.e., Mach No. 2 to 3.5 and altitudes from sea level to 50,000 feet. The air delivery system is designed for maximum conditions of 7 lb/sec, 1000F and 250 psia. The annular inlet manifold is adaptable to either a 2-inch-diameter, center-perforated or 6-inch-diameter, end burning primary combustor. A variable-length, 5-inch-diameter ramburner is used. The combustion processes occurring in the primary and secondary chambers are monitored by means of wall pressure and temperature measurements, thrust measurement, residue sampling and optical techniques. Facility performance capabilities, system calibration and preliminary evaluation of baseline direct-connect testing are presented. (Author).

Book Design Considerations of Istar Hydrocarbon Fueled Combustor Operating in Air Augmented Rocket Ramjet and Scramjet Modes

Download or read book Design Considerations of Istar Hydrocarbon Fueled Combustor Operating in Air Augmented Rocket Ramjet and Scramjet Modes written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and ground test of a rocket-based combined cycle (RBCC) propulsion system is being conducted as part of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Integrated System Test of an Airbreathing Rocket (ISTAR) program. The eventual flight vehicle (X-43B) is designed to support an air-launched self-powered Mach 0.7 to 7.0 demonstration of an RBCC engine through all of its airbreathing propulsion modes - air augmented rocket (AAR), ramjet (RJ), and scramjet (SJ). Through the use of analytical tools, numerical simulations, and experimental tests the ISTAR program is developing and validating a hydrocarbon-fueled RBCC combustor design methodology. This methodology will then be used to design an integrated RBCC propulsion system that produces robust ignition and combustion stability characteristics while maximizing combustion efficiency and minimizing drag losses. First order analytical and numerical methods used to design hydrocarbon-fueled combustors are discussed with emphasis on the methods and determination of requirements necessary to establish engine operability and performance characteristics.
