Book Performance Characteristics of Annular Linear and Permanent Magnet Induction Pumps of Finite Dimensions

Download or read book Performance Characteristics of Annular Linear and Permanent Magnet Induction Pumps of Finite Dimensions written by Jordan Rein and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid metals have gained renewed interest as an efficient energy carrier for applications ranging in concentrated solar, nuclear fission, and other industrial processes. Specifically, the nuclear sector is interested in using sodium metal as a reactor coolant for it's a high thermal conductivity and boiling point. While the advantages are significant, there is a need for the development of improved thermal hydraulic components like pumps. Typically, mechanical pumps have filled this role for liquid metal systems. However, there are challenges in their application to sodium systems which cause safety concerns. As an alternative, liquid metals can be pumped using the Electromagnetic Induction Pump (EMIP). Compared to conventional mechanical pumps, EMIPs simplify design by avoiding direct contact of pump components with sodium and by eliminating high speed impellers, seals, and bearings. They also simplify plant design and safety by using unobstructed, low pressure drop, hermetically sealed flow conduits made of compatible materials. Therefore, these pumps significantly improve simplicity and safety which are driving factors in the nuclear fission industry. However, typical EMIP efficiencies are low, ranging up to 45% in the case of the Annular Linear Induction Pump (ALIP). Some of these inefficiencies are due to Joule losses in the pump conduit and fluid. But other inefficiencies arise from finite dimensional edge effects like the Finite Length Effect and the Finite Width Effect. In this work, finite dimensional edge effects of a small-scale ALIP and Permanent Magnet Induction Pumps (PMIPs) are studied through pressure-flowrate and efficiency measurements. Under the ALIP work, theoretical analysis showed that that the Finite Length Effect significantly impacts the total pump performance. Suppression of the Finite Length Effect by magnetic field tapering through methods of 'Coil Shifting' and 'Coil Grading' were experimentally tested and were found to marginally impact the total ALIP performance. Under the PMIP work, theoretical analysis showed that the Finite Width Effect significantly impacts the total pump performance. Pressure-flowrate and efficiency were experimentally characterized for a 12-pole Double-Array Disc-Type PMIP. For the specific PMIP studied, these performance measurements validated a theoretical correction coefficient which accounts for the finite channel and magnet dimensions.

Book Permanent Magnet Motor Technology

Download or read book Permanent Magnet Motor Technology written by Jacek F. Gieras and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of permanent magnet (PM) motor technology and its impact on electromechanical drives has grown exponentially since the publication of the bestselling second edition. The PM brushless motor market has grown considerably faster than the overall motion control market. This rapid growth makes it essential for electrical and electromechanical engineers and students to stay up-to-date on developments in modern electrical motors and drives, including their control, simulation, and CAD. Reflecting innovations in the development of PM motors for electromechanical drives, Permanent Magnet Motor Technology: Design and Applications, Third Edition demonstrates the construction of PM motor drives and supplies ready-to-implement solutions to common roadblocks along the way. This edition supplies fundamental equations and calculations for determining and evaluating system performance, efficiency, reliability, and cost. It explores modern computer-aided design of PM motors, including the finite element approach, and explains how to select PM motors to meet the specific requirements of electrical drives. The numerous examples, models, and diagrams provided in each chapter facilitate a lucid understanding of motor operations and characteristics. This 3rd edition of a bestselling reference has been thoroughly revised to include: Chapters on high speed motors and micromotors Advances in permanent magnet motor technology Additional numerical examples and illustrations An increased effort to bridge the gap between theory and industrial applications Modified research results The growing global trend toward energy conservation makes it quite possible that the era of the PM brushless motor drive is just around the corner. This reference book will give engineers, researchers, and graduate-level students the comprehensive understanding required to develop the breakthroughs that will push this exciting technology to the forefront.

Book Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Electric and Magnetic Fields written by R. Belmans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the edited versions of the papers presented at the Second International Workshop on Electric and Magnetic Fields held at the Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (Belgium) in May 1994. This Workshop deals with numerical solutions of electromagnetic problems in real life applications. The topics include coupled problems (thermal, mechanical, electric circuits), CAD & CAM applications, 3D eddy current and high frequency problems, optimisation and application oriented numerical problems. This workshop was organised jointly by the AIM (Association of Engineers graduated from de Montefiore Electrical Institute) together with the Departments of Electrical Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven (Prof. R. Belmans), the University of Gent (Prof. J. Melkebbek) and the University of Liege (Prof. W. Legros). These laboratories are working together in the framework of the Pole d'Attraction Interuniversitaire - Inter-University Attractie-Pole 51 - on electromagnetic systems led by the University of Liege and the research work they perform covers most of the topics of the Workshop. One of the principal aims of this Workshop was to provide a bridge between the electromagnetic device designers, mainly industrialists, and the electromagnetic field computation developers. Therefore, this book contains a continuous spectrum of papers from application of electromagnetic models in industrial design to presentation of new theoretical developments.
