Book Gorbachev s Gamble

Download or read book Gorbachev s Gamble written by Andrei Grachev and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev’s Gamble offers a new and more convincing answer to this question by providing the missing link between the internal and external aspects of Gorbachev’s perestroika. Andrei Grachev shows that the radical transformation of Soviet foreign policy during the Gorbachev years was an integral part of an ambitious project of internal democratic reform and of the historic opening of Soviet society to the outside world. Grachev explains the motives and the intentions of the initiators of this project and describes their hopes and their illusions. He recounts the story of the internal debates and struggles in the Kremlin and behind-the-scene decisions that led to the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the break-up of the Warsaw Pact and eventually the demise of the Soviet Union itself. The book is based on exclusive interviews with the leaders of the Soviet Union including Gorbachev, personal notes and diaries of their assistants and advisers and transcripts of the discussions inside the Politburo and Secretariat of the Central Committee. Together they constitute a multi-voice political confession of a whole generation of decision-makers of the Soviet Union that enables us better to understand the origin and the breathtaking trajectory of the events that led to the end of the Cold War and the unprecedented transformation of world politics in the closing decades of the 20th century.

Book Glasnost and Soviet Foreign Policy

Download or read book Glasnost and Soviet Foreign Policy written by Lilita Dzirkals and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Note examines the beginnings of Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost (openness) policy and its impact on Soviet foreign policy. It traces the gradual widening of Soviet public discussion of foreign and security policy issues and identifies the external and domestic factors driving this development. It covers the period from 1985 through October 1988, but it also makes reference to more recent events. Starting as exposure of corrupt officials, glasnost soon was expanded and used to undermine the conservative opposition to perestroika (restructuring) and the new political thinking. Positive Western reaction to glasnost, welcoming it as proof of Gorbachev's peaceful intentions, stimulated its further expansion. Glasnost undid the Soviet "enemy image" and thus cleared the way for cooperation with the West while the regime sought a way out of the crisis facing the country. Because of the internal power struggle, glasnost has survived attempts to reverse it. As contending elements state their differing views, information regarding Soviet foreign policy and its formulation increases.

Book excerpt: Gorbachev: The Man and the System portrays Gorbachev's rise to power and his tenure in office against the background of a period of critical change and development in the Soviet system. The research is primarily based on Soviet materials, supplemented and critically compared with a wide range of Western press and academic studies. Both Zemtsov and Farrar bring to the analysis their own experiences, acquired under different circumstances. Part I focuses on a selected chronology of significant events from Gorbachev's assumption of power in March 1985 to June 1987. The authors examine leadership and personnel changes, the economy, the society, and the arts. Part II takes a look at foreign policies by examining: relations with the United States and the industrialized West; arms control policy; relations with Eastern Europe; relations with the People's Republic of China; and relations with the third world. Part III explores Gorbachev's military policies. Part IV concludes with the authors' assessment of the future. Included in this book are appendices on: changes in the Council of Ministers, Ministers, and Chairmen of State Committees; Politburo and central committee meetings since Gorbachev became General Secretary, through June 1987; and announced changes in the Diplomatic Corps and Foreign Ministry as reported in the Soviet press. Book The Soviet Union under Gorbachev Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Soviet Union under Gorbachev Routledge Revivals written by David A. Dyker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev’s accession to General Secretary promised great changes to the Soviet Union and its relationship with the rest of the world. This book, first published in 1987, discusses the problems faced by Gorbachev when he entered office and how he planned to tackle them. Gorbachev was a figure of genuine debate in the mid-1980s, raising doubts from Western specialists regarding his radicalism and ability to reform the Soviet economic system in particular. Here, Dyker and his colleagues assess the changes Gorbachev had already made to consolidate his power base, alongside those that he was proposing to make to agriculture, industry and foreign relations at the time of publication. The book speculates about how Gorbachev might implement his proposed political and economic reforms, what opposition he might encounter and how successful he would be. A fascinating insight into Soviet economic and political policy in the years leading up to the Union’s collapse, this work will be of particular importance to students and academics researching the personality of Gorbachev and the political and economic history of the Soviet Union.

Download or read book Glasnost Perestroika and the Soviet Media written by Brian McNair and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet journalists are at the center of the tumultuous changes taking place in the USSR today. As Stalinist regimes across Eastern Europe are dismantled, the reforms of Mikhail Gorbachev have transformed Soviet political, social and economic life. Glasnost, Perestroika and the Soviet Media examines the implications of these changes for the Soviet news and television media. It traces the development of Soviet journalism through the writings of Marx and Lenin, the distortions of Stalin and Brezhnev, and the reforms of the Gorbachev era, culminating in the new press law, which provides greater freedom of the press and freedom of information. The discussion is accompanied by analysis of the content of Soviet print and television journalism, including chapters on Soviet news coverage of the superpower summits in Rejkyavik and Moscow, a comparison of Soviet and Western reporting of international affairs, and the impact of glasnost on Soviet media images ofwomen.
