Download or read book Perceptual and Cognitive Development written by Rochel Gelman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1996-06-17 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceptual and Cognitive Development illustrates how the developmental approach yields fundamental contributions to our understanding of perception and cognition as a whole. The book discusses how to relate developmental, comparative, and neurological considerations to early learning and development, and it presents fundamental problems in cognition and language, such as the acquisition of a coherent, organized, and shared understanding of concepts and language. Discussions of learning, memory, attention, and problem solving are embedded within specific accounts of the neurological status of developing minds and the nature of knowledge. Research advances and theoretical reorientations are updated in the Second Edition; the revision focuses more attention on the cognitive and biological sciences and neuroscience Illustrates how the developmental approach can yield fundamental contributions to our understanding of perception and cognition as a whole Discussions of learning, memory, and attention permeate individual chapters

Book Memory Drawing

  • Author : Darren R. Rousar
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-03
  • ISBN : 9780980045444
  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Memory Drawing written by Darren R. Rousar and published by . This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: If you think about it, all life drawing and painting is at some point being done from the artist's memory, even if that memory is only a few seconds old. Every time the artist takes their eyes off of the model or scene and looks at their paper or canvas, their visual memory is involved. What if that artist's visual memory was highly trained? That artist might need the model for a shorter period of time, or she might have a more productive time when the model is in pose. He might be better at painting all of the fleeting effects that nature throws at us when we are landscape painting en plein air. Although I encourage you to consistently engage in memory-drawing practice, it should not supplant your regular art exercises. Memory-drawing ought to be done in addition to your regular art training, not instead of it. In a perfect world it would be integrated into traditional arts instruction, but the reality is that you will most likely be training your visual memory on your own. Memory Drawing: Perceptual Training and Recall exists to guide you in doing just that. It will also help you improve your abilities to remember fleeting effects, seize essentials, and even enhance your imagination.

Download or read book Drawing the Blind written by John Miller Kennedy and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work explores how children and adults who have been blind since birth can both perceive and draw pictures. John M. Kennedy, a perception psychologist, relates how pictures in raised form can be understood by the blind, and how untrained blind people can make recognizable sketches of objects, situations, and events using new methods for raised-line drawing. According to Kennedy, the ability to draw develops in blind people as it does in the sighted. His book gives detailed descriptions of his work with the blind, includes many pictures by blind children and adults, and provides a new theory of visual and tactile perception - applicable to both the blind and the sighted - to account for his startling findings. Kennedy argues that spatial perception is possible through touch as well as through sight, and that aspects of perspective are found in pictures by the blind. He shows that blind people recognize when pictures of objects are drawn incorrectly. According to Kennedy, the incorrect features are often deliberate attempts to represent properties of objects that cannot be shown in a picture. These metaphors, as Kennedy describes them, can be interpreted by the blind and the sighted in the same way. Kennedy's findings are vitally important for studies in perceptual and cognitive psychology, the philosophy of representation, and education. His conclusions have practical significance as well, offering inspiration and guidelines for those who seek to engineer ways to allow blind and visually impaired people to gain access to information only available in graphs, figures, and pictures.

Book Drawing from Perception Rewiring the Brain for Observational Art

Download or read book Drawing from Perception Rewiring the Brain for Observational Art written by Joshua Field and published by Kendall Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from Perception demystifies the art of drawing from observation and integrates new approaches to understanding the ways in which we perceive the world around us. As we navigate our daily lives, the mind works relentlessly in the background, actively constructing models of our experience in order to anticipate what will happen next. Unlike a camera taking a photograph, we see the world as an assembly of things that we have previously learned triggered by momentary visual stimuli. Using the strategies in this book, we will learn how to shift the balance toward visual accuracy while maintaining a clear understanding of how the brain creates models of what we see.

Book Drawing of a Swan Before Memory

Download or read book Drawing of a Swan Before Memory written by Laynie Browne and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we experience the world before memory, before language, before the senses have separated, or before the concepts of “you” and “I” have been distinguished? Laynie Browne investigates both the limits and potential of such an inchoate world in her new book of poetry, Drawing of a Swan Before Memory. In a series of elegant prose poems, Browne guides the reader through the intricate development of human perception, where the haunting vastness of childhood slowly gives way to the defining features of adult cognition. Subtly nuanced verse constructs a world of color before sight and utterance before language--all the while aware that, ironically, language itself makes this ethereal world possible.
