Practicum provides for the application of theory and counseling skills that students have learned during the coursework. It is also memorable moment to meet a real client for the first time. Practicum supervisees have to prove their counseling skills and capacities as professional counselors. However, in this stage, practicum supervisees experience a high level of anxiety, self-doubt and low self-efficacy that keeps them from being fully present with and therapeutically responding to their clients. Creative/expressive arts have been utilized in counselor education as well as counseling to reduce those barriers and optimize supervisees' professional growth by providing creative non-verbal methods to build safe and trusting supervisory relationships, increase self-awareness, and reduce fear and resistance. This qualitative research explored how counselor educators have experienced and perceived using creative/expressive arts in practicum supervision. Seven participants were recruited through reputational and snowball sampling. Six participants held a Ph.D. in counselor education or closely related fields. All participants had counseling related licensures and practicum teaching and/or practicum supervision experience using creative/expressive arts for at least three years as well as publications and/or presentations about creative/expressive art supervision. The participants engaged in 60-90 minute interviews and reviewed all transcripts and findings to verify the accuracy and trustworthiness. N-Vivo 11 was used to analyze the data. Findings revealed four categories of themes: creative intervention, the decision-making process, the supervisory process, and professional growth. The study offers insights into why and how counselor educators and clinical supervisors utilized creative/expressive arts to optimize their practicum supervisees' professional growth. Implications for counselor educators, clinical supervisors, counselors-in-training, and counseling programs are offered. Future directions for research are also discussed.

First, the study focused on the perceptions of how clinical supervision influenced work with students and families. Second, the study explored the perceptions of how clinical supervision impacted professional identity and their professional relationships with other school counselors. There is a gap in clinical supervision expectations between school counselors and mental health counselors. Even though the training of all counselors is often very similar in graduate school, the professional paths of school counselors diverge from mental health counselors due to the prevalence of clinical supervision being the standard professional development expectation for mental health counselors, but rarely is clinical supervision an expectation for school counselors. Unfortunately, as mental health needs of students have escalated, a lack of clinical supervision for school counselors has, in some cases, resulted in being overwhelmed by student mental health needs, crisis response, and working with school building stakeholders to identify and close gaps in student achievement. The lack of clinical supervision has also led to burnout, role confusion, and a withering of counseling skills resulting in student needs not being met. This study used a qualitative method to learn about the perceived benefits school counselors receive from clinical supervision. The study discovered how clinically supervised school counselors employ advanced counseling, decision-making, and relationship skills in several aspects of their work. The study also learned how clinical supervision impacts professional identity and relationships with other school counselors.

Book excerpt: This exploratory research study investigated perceptions of practicum counselor trainees to help understand how prepared they believed they were for supervision. Based upon common elements of various developmental models of supervision, this study examined counselor trainees' perceptions of their preparedness for practicum supervision based upon: (a) expectations of supervision; (b) understanding of the structure and formats used in supervision; (c) receptivity to and use of feedback in supervision; and (d) the evaluative component of supervision. This study also investigated possible explanations as to what factors may lead counselor trainees to feel more or less prepared for practicum supervision. The participants in this study were 156 counseling students enrolled in practicum courses at 27 CACREP-accredited counseling programs across the United States during the spring semester of 2005. The instrument used in this study was the Counselor Trainee Preparedness Perceptions Survey - Practicum Supervision (CTPPS-PS) survey, developed by the researcher. The CTPPS-PS was administered anonymously on-line through an Internet link distributed to students by practicum instructors or in paper format. To minimize the effects of varying practicum supervision experiences incurred by the sample participants, data collection was restricted to a 30-day period during the first half of the academic semester. Findings from this research revealed significant positive relationships between counselor trainees' overall perceptions of preparedness for practicum supervision and perceived preparation for various aspects of supervision. For the various aspects of supervision, the strongest relationships were found between overall perceptions of preparedness and preparation for what is required in supervision and to accept guidance and support through supervision. The weakest relationship was between overall perceptions and preparation for supervisory evaluation. These research findings also revealed significant positive relationships between counselor trainees' overall perceptions of preparedness for practicum supervision and perceptions of practicum supervision experience to date as well as with comfort experienced with receiving feedback in supervision. Another significant finding was consistently higher overall perceptions of preparedness for trainees being supervised by part-time faculty and for trainees attending universities with doctoral counseling programs. The findings of this study may encourage counselor educators to augment their programs and courses with supervision preparation strategies so that students may begin practicum feeling better prepared than the participants in this study. For supervisors, findings from this study can form the basis for a dialogue at the onset of supervision to determine the needs of counselor trainees, and thus help mitigate potential obstacles to practicum experiences resulting from areas lacking in preparation for supervision.

Book excerpt: As higher education continues to integrate technology as a learning platform so has the counselor education field (Carlisle et al., 2017). This study examined how time spent in technology-assisted supervision influenced counselor supervisor self-efficacy, the supervisory working alliance, and supervisee performance in supervision using Social Cognitive Theory (SCT; Bandura, 1986) as the theoretical framework for the study. Participants in the study were 40 counselor supervisors who were either counselor educators or doctoral students in counselor education and provided weekly supervision to master's level counselors in training enrolled in either a practicum or internship course. Data were collected by an online survey consisting of a demographic form and three instruments (i.e., Counselor Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale, Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory, and Counselor Evaluation Rating Scale). Supervisors were encouraged to complete instruments on more than one supervisee; a total of 57 sets of instruments were completed and used for the analysis. The results of the simple linear regression for each of the research questions found no statistical significance of time-spent in technology-assisted supervision predicting counselor supervisor self-efficacy, the supervisory working alliance, or supervisee performance in supervision. The implications of these findings, limitations of this study, and recommendations for future research and practice are described.

Book excerpt: Although the field of professional school counseling has recognized the positive impact that supervision offers, discussion of its use with new-entrant school counseling professionals has been limited. This study responds to the limited discussion of supervision with new-entrant professional school counselors by describing the supervision experiences and perceived needs of 15 new-entrant professional school counselors. Participants of this study described advantages and disadvantages of receiving supervision. When discussing supervision activities as new-entrant professionals, participants frequently confused the process of supervision with mentoring and evaluation. Supervision quality was described as deficient, and the structure of supervision varied among participants. Participants described that they needed support in their new role as professional school counselors. They also identified supervision needs that have been met as well as needs that have gone unmet in their work as new professionals. Supervision types and the focus of supervision emerged as overarching themes from participants' descriptions of their supervision experiences and perceived needs. The participants most frequently described their supervision experiences and perceived needs as administrative supervision. Reports of clinical and developmental supervision experiences were limited to participants whose supervisors were licensed as professional counselors. Fewer participants described their need for clinical and developmental supervision when compared to those who described their need for administrative supervision. As participants described their supervision experiences and perceived needs, their descriptions largely focused on concerns with their own performance rather than the impact of their performance on others. Implications for the practice of professional school counselor supervision and for the specific practice of supervision for new-entrant professional school counselors were discussed based on the experiences and perceived needs reported by the study's 15 participants. Implications of these results were also included for professional school counseling organizations as well as for the counselor educators who prepare both school counselors and supervisors. Limitations of this study were described and recommendations were made for future research as it related to the practice of new-entrant professional school counselor supervision.
