Download or read book Perceptions and Concerns of Elementary Teachers and Principals Toward the Implementation of a School wide Positive Behavior Support Innovation written by Susan L. Angstadt and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions and concerns of elementary teachers and principals toward the implementation of a school-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) innovation. In addition, the study explored the factors that elementary teachers and principals perceived positively or negatively influenced the implementation and sustainability of SWPBS. The study was conducted in three elementary schools in two school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania. A total of sixty-three elementary teachers and three principals participated in the study by completing two online survey instruments. The researcher also interviewed some of the participants to gain additional knowledge about the implementation of SWPBS. The results of the study indicated that many of the elementary teachers reported having concerns related to the implementation of SWPBS and how it affects them personally and professionally. The specific concerns varied depending upon the participant's knowledge, use, and experience with implementing SWPBS; however, the data revealed that both teachers and principals are concerned with the management of SWPBS in terms of time, effort, and data collection responsibilities. Furthermore, the results suggested that the perceptions and concerns of elementary teachers and principals toward SWPBS can have a significant impact on the implementation and sustainability of this innovation.

The philosophy and teaching practices of The Responsive Classroom Approach offers educators tools to bring balance to the whole child. The current investigation examines the implementation efforts of seven educators in a small rural school district. This school district has a building-wide (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) system in place, while a small group of educators are using the Responsive Classroom Approach. The current investigation utilizes a mixed-methods approach. A short self-assessment reflection was used as a warm-up activity, and Q methodology provided the basis to gain quantitative and qualitative results. Results indicate that all response variance loaded on one perspective, explaining more than 70% of the variance in the Q-sort. The current study revealed an increase in educator job satisfaction related to Responsive Classroom implementation. Participants also revealed that collegial collaboration was one of the strongest factors related to successful Responsive Classroom implementation.

Book Elementary Teacher Perspectives Regarding Principals Roles in Implementing New School Initiatives

Download or read book Elementary Teacher Perspectives Regarding Principals Roles in Implementing New School Initiatives written by Greg W. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined elementary teachers' perspectives regarding their principals' roles in motivating them to engage in new district initiatives. The goal was to identify specific principals' actions that either motivated teachers to change or reinforced their resistive behaviors. Participants included elementary classroom teachers of students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade from rural and suburban school districts located in south-central Pennsylvania. In order to determine these teachers' perceptions, data were collected through surveys, open-ended questions, and face-to-face interviews. Prior research concluded that seven critical principals' behaviors were necessary to successfully implement new initiatives in schools - trust, sense of urgency, vision, communication, shared leadership, empowerment, and motivation. However, insufficient research existed to demonstrate that teachers perceived these behaviors as necessary to influencing them to engage in change. Results from this study revealed that teachers' perceptions of these behaviors supported previous research. Teachers perceived these seven principals' behaviors as critical for motivating teachers to participate in new district initiatives.

Book Elementary Teachers Perceptions on the Influence of Principals Behaviors and Actions on School Culture School Climate and Teacher Self efficacy

Download or read book Elementary Teachers Perceptions on the Influence of Principals Behaviors and Actions on School Culture School Climate and Teacher Self efficacy written by Natalie R. Neopolitano-Salmon and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of teachers regarding the influence of the actions and behaviors of principals that impact school culture, school climate, and teacher self-efficacy. Sixty-five elementary public school teachers of grades kindergarten through fifth grade, across all subject and content areas, participated in this study. Data were collected through the use of online surveys as well as interviews with a limited number of participants. The results suggested the participating teachers agreed that particular aspects of a principal's actions and behaviors have an impact on school culture, school climate, and teacher self-efficacy. Particularly, the results of this study revealed that the aspects of support from the principal, trust among stakeholders, along with mutual respect among all, contribute to a positive school environment. Since this study was focused on three particular public school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania, the perceptions of the participants of this study may not be generalized to all teachers in elementary education. However, the impact of actions and behaviors of principals on school culture, school climate, and teacher self-efficacy was supported by research, which may prove beneficial to current and future educators.

Book Handbook of Positive Behavior Support

Download or read book Handbook of Positive Behavior Support written by Wayne Sailor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolution in working with difficult students began during the 1980s, with a dramatic shift away from dependence on simply punishing bad behavior to reinforcing desired, positive behaviors of children in the classroom. With its foundation in applied behavior analysis (ABA), positive behavior support (PBS) is a social ecology approach that continues to play an increasingly integral role in public education as well as mental health and social services nationwide. The Handbook of Positive Behavior Support gathers into one concise volume the many elements of this burgeoning field and organizes them into a powerful, dynamic knowledge base – theory, research, and applications. Within its chapters, leading experts, including the primary developers and researchers of PBS: (1) Review the origins, history, and ethical foundations of positive behavior support. (2) Report on applications of PBS in early childhood and family contexts, from Head Start to foster care to mental health settings to autism treatment programs. (3) Examine school-based PBS used to benefit all students regardless of ability or conduct. (4) Relate schoolwide PBS to wraparound mental health services and the RTI (response to intervention) movement. (5) Provide data and discussion on a variety of topics salient to PBS, including parenting issues, personnel training, high school use, poorly functioning schools, and more. This volume is an essential resource for school-based practitioners as well as clinicians and researchers in clinical child, school, and educational psychology.

Download or read book An Investigation of Elementary Principals Perceptions and Their Role in the Development and Support of Transdisciplinary Teacher Teams written by Alexandra Krayets and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this grounded theory qualitative study is to explore the extent to which the selected elementary principals from a large urban district in the northeast region of the United States, referred to as the Metropolis School District, perceive their roles in promoting collaboration and connecting related services to the instructional programs for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Participants for the study were purposefully selected based on their student population and evidence of collaborative teaming in their school organizations. Principals who have elementary school sites, and those who received a score between 4.00 and 4.99 in the Collaborative Teachers domain of the school survey were asked to participate in this study. Scores in the domain of Collaborative Teachers were consulted for the selection of the participants, as they indicated on the existence of collaborative practices in those schools as reported by the teachers. With the high ratings in the domain of collaboration, the researcher focused on leadership practices that supported teachers’ collaborative efforts. This study analyzed participants’ perceptions and described their practical approaches in developing transdisciplinary teams and promoting collaborative inter-professional environment in schools for students with multiple disabilities. This research study was guided by the following questions related to the Principals’ perceptions on promotion of collaboration, formation, support and accountability of transdisciplinary teaming process between special education teachers and related service providers who educate students with multiple disabilities in a special education. 1. To what extent do principals view their role in promoting collaboration within related services and instructional teacher teams? 2. What do principals perceive as their role in formation of related services and instructional teacher teams? 3. What do principals perceive their roles to be in supporting inter-professional teams and the challenges they encounter while managing the teams? 4. To what extent do principals hold transdisciplinary/inter-professional teams accountable to ensure their effectiveness? Out of the 19 principals who fit into the outlined criteria, seventeen participants (89%) volunteered to participate in the study. The researcher developed open-ended questions around the four research questions. During semi-structured interviews, participants were provided with an opportunity to elaborate on the concepts, offer explanations, share their experiences and views about the topic.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to provide the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) with information about teachers' responses to School-wide Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) and key educational outcomes on students in North Carolina elementary schools implementing School-wide (PBS). A web-based survey of teachers at eight elementary schools implementing School-wide positive behavior support according to national criteria was administered to assess teacher response to School-wide PBS. Data from the North Carolina Education Data Center was used to assess student outcomes related to academic performance, school suspensions, and teacher turn-over rates in the eight study schools compared with 264 NC elementary schools that had started School-wide PBS. Part 1 presents the results of the web-based survey administered to all teachers in the eight elementary schools implementing School-wide PBS according to national criteria for implementation. The web-based survey sought to answer the following questions: (1) What school-wide behavioral support systems are in place in study schools? (2) How satisfied are teachers with the support systems in place in their schools? and (3) How has School-wide PBS affected teacher perception of school climate and student behavior? Part 2 presents the results of analyses of data from the North Carolina Education Research Data Center to answer the following questions about School-wide PBS: (1) What is the effect of School-wide PBS on academic performance, grade promotion, and short term suspension rates in study schools compared to all NC elementary schools that have ever implemented School-wide PBS? and (2) What is the effect of School-wide PBS on teacher turn-over rates in study schools compared to all NC elementary schools that have ever implemented School-wide PBS? Scales and Measures are appended. (Contains 20 tables and 7 figures.).

Book The Influence of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports PBIS on School Climate

Download or read book The Influence of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports PBIS on School Climate written by Steven Bebee and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many schools have used school wide behavior management programs such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) effectively as a behavior management system to improve student classroom behavior issues. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to explore how PBIS influence high school teachers0́9 perceptions on school climate within a participant school located in Southern Arizona. Through naturalistic inquiry using face-to-face semi structured interviews, seven teachers who have taught on the participant high school campus for four to six years were able to share their personal perceptions regarding PBIS and its influence on their school climate. The data collected for this study included a PBIS teacher questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and three years of longitudinal student referral data to examine teacher perceptions of school climates and if the school wide behavior programs they implement has had any influence. This study identified possible limitations and advantages of PBIS on student behavior and determined whether perception from the study teachers differed from the general teaching staff regarding the influence PBIS has on school climate perceptions. The findings and conclusions of the study demonstrate that a relationship does indeed exist between having a successful behavior managements system in place such as PBIS and teachers0́9 feelings about their school climate. Themes were developed and identified that may help administrators understand the relationships that may exist.
