Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devastation caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is having a major impact on both the social and economic environment in South Africa. HIV/AIDS hits at the core of the businesses structure - the bottom line. In the absence of a cure for the disease or an effective vaccine, the challenge for all the stakeholders is how to sucessfully contain and limit the impact of the disease. Intervention programmes such as awareness, knowledge sharing and sero-prevailance testing have the potential to limit HIV/AIDS infections and reduce high-risk behaviours. The aim of the study was to establish what the perceptions and attitudes are of employees at different levels of the organization with regard to HIV/AIDS testing. A further aim was to identify possible reasons for the poor employee response to voluntary HIV/AIDS testing.

Despite the very high number of estimated people living with HIV/AIDS in resource limited countries, VCT uptake is still a challenge. This book provides an exploration of perceptions of community people, service providers and people living with HIV on VCT in resource limited settings. Although people have knowledge about HIV/AIDS and VCT, but because of their own attitudes, beliefs, misconceptions, stigma and discrimination, confidentiality and required cost, VCT uptake is low. Motivation to service providers and social support to people living with HIV will boost the VCT uptake. Research based IEC activities will increase awareness about HIV/AIDS to reduce the negative attitudes and misconceptions, fear, stigma and discrimination. Book AIDS on the Agenda

Download or read book AIDS on the Agenda written by Sue Holden and published by Oxfam. This book was released on 2003 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS on the Agenda is written for policymakers, managers, and program staff in development and humanitarian agencies, to promote debate about the challenges that confront them in a world which has been changed for ever by the pandemic of AIDS. The book considers three possible responses to the problem: * Do nothing. * Try to specialize in direct AIDS work. * Adapt core programs and internal systems to respond to the impact of AIDS. The author argues for the third approach as the essential initial response. She shows how mainstream work in a wide range of sectors e" including food security, livelihoods support, education, health promotion, and emergency provision of water and sanitation e" can be modified to reduce susceptibility to HIV infection and vulnerability to the impacts of AIDS. She also offers practical advice on modifying personnel and financial systems to protect the interests of staff and the viability of organizations when operating in AIDS-prone contexts. The text is based on case studies drawn from the experiences of three agencies (ActionAid, Oxfam International, and Save the Children UK) and their partners; and on insights contributed by a wide range of other organizations. The problems inherent in the e~mainstreaminge(tm) approach are dealt with frankly and constructively. The comprehensive Resources section offers user-friendly guidance on the following topics: * Researching and predicting the internal impacts of AIDS * Assessing the impacts of AIDS education and awareness-raising * Drafting a workplace policy * Monitoring the impact of AIDS and of internal mainstreaming * Training for mainstreaming AIDS in development and humanitarian work * Undertaking community research for mainstreaming AIDS in development and humanitarian work * Adapting organizational systems
