Book Pepperspectives

Download or read book Pepperspectives written by John Pepper and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the past 20 years, I have authored blogs and essays under the title, Pepperspectives. The topics have been wide-ranging, from politics, international affairs, to values of living, and reflections on books and movies which have meant the most to me. I published an earlier selection of these blogs under the title of, Looking Back, Looking Forward, about four years ago. I am now publishing a fresh selection of these reflections and recollections. They, too, cover a wide range of subjects, several of which are highlighted on the cover of this book. I have written the majority of them during the past six years. As you would expect, a considerable number deal with the tumultuous political situation we have had in the United States and around the globe. Fortunately, they close on a note of confidence and hope as we transition to a new presidential administration under the leadership of President Joe Biden who is committed to bringing what has been a polarized nation together against a common purpose. Never in my 80+ year lifetime have the challenges for our nation and the world been clearer. It will not be easy; we will take steps forward and then backward, but as we have before, I am confident we can make progress. I draw confidence from the young, not least my grandchildren, who every day inspire me with their imagination, their individuality and their shared goodness.

Book Pepperspectives The Final Chapter

Download or read book Pepperspectives The Final Chapter written by John Pepper and published by St. Helena Press. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the past quarter-century, I have authored blogs and essays, mostly under the title Pepperspectives. The topics have been wide-ranging, from leadership, to values of living, from political and international affairs, to reflections on books and movies which have meant the most to me. I published two earlier selections of these blogs, the first under the title of Looking Back, Looking Forward, about six years ago. The other Pepperspectives: Reflections on Values for Living, Global and National Affairs and Other Contemporary Issues, published about three years ago. I am publishing this final selection of reflections and recollections: Pepperspectives: The Final Chapter. I write this in 2024. The challenges our nation and the world face are immense. Overcoming them will call for strong, principled, wise and courageous leadership. I’m conscious how much we are leaving the young to do. Yet, I look ahead with confidence that we can and will make progress. I draw confidence from the young, I draw confidence from leaders I know, a host of them at Procter & Gamble. I draw confidence from my children and my grandchildren, who every day inspire me with their imagination, their individuality, their quest for excellence and their share of goodness. The oldest of Francie’s and my grandchildren is 20. The youngest is 7. I don’t know exactly what they’ll do as they become full-blown adults, but I do know this. They are good people and they love each other and you can’t do better than this. You can’t ask for more than this. I dedicate this final volume, as I have earlier of my books, to the person who has made my life possible: my wife of over 56 years, Francie.

Book What Really Matters

Download or read book What Really Matters written by John Pepper and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental question in business and in personal life is the same: what really matters? In this book, one of America's most widely admired business leaders distills a lifetime of experience, including failures as well as successes, to reveal his answers. John Pepper, president, CEO, and chairman of Proctor & Gamble for a combined 16 years, underscores the importance of continuous change, innovation, and renewal as prerequisites for growth and sound leadership. In "What Really Matters", he suggests that a preparedness to alter perspective, rethink assumptions, or change course is central not only to understanding customer needs and keeping costs under control but also to developing talent, organizing global businesses, and supporting communities. While he discusses specific business tactics, he notes that they all centre on fundamental tenets: listen to and respect the customer, engender personal accountability and passionate ownership, encourage diversity, and create a vibrant, trusting institution that incorporates employees and their families. In his own years as an executive, Pepper has demonstrated that a profitable business can create and sustain a culture that shapes, and is shaped by, ethical behaviour. His profoundly important advice and counsel belong in the lexicon and practice of every leader.

Book Laboratories of Autocracy

Download or read book Laboratories of Autocracy written by David Pepper and published by St. Helena Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It’s the statehouses, stupid.” Laboratories of Autocracy shows that far more than the high-profile antics of politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene or Jim Jordan—and yes, even bigger than Donald Trump’s "Big Lie”—it’s anonymous, often corrupt politicians in statehouses across the country who pose the greatest dangers to American democracy. Because these statehouses no longer operate as functioning democracies, these unknown politicians have all the incentive to keep doing greater damage, and can not be held accountable however extreme they get. This has driven steep declines in states like Ohio and others across the country. And collectively, it’s placed American democracy in its greatest peril since the dawn of the Jim Crow era. But Pepper doesn’t stop there. He lays out a robust pro-democracy agenda outlining how everyone from elected officials to business leaders to everyday citizens can fight back.

Book excerpt: "Pepper comes through again with this clever tale." --President Bill Clinton A twisty, one-step-ahead-of-the-headlines political thriller featuring a rogue reporter who investigates election meddling of epic proportions, written by the ultimate insider. Investigative reporter Jack Sharpe is down to his last chance. Fired from his high-profile gig with a national news channel, his only lead is a phone full of messages from a grad student named Tori Justice, who swears she's observed an impossible result in a local election. Sharpe is sure she's mistaken...but what if she isn't? Sharpe learns that the most important tool in any election is the voter file: the database that keeps track of all voters in a district, and shapes a campaign's game plan for victory. If one person were to gain control of an entire party's voter file, they could manipulate the outcome of virtually every election in America. Sharpe discovers this has happened--and that the person behind the hack is determined to turn American politics upside down. The more he digs, the more Sharpe is forced to question the values--and viability--of the country he loves and a president he admired. And soon it becomes clear that not just his career is in jeopardy...so is his life.

Book Still Failing at Fairness

Download or read book Still Failing at Fairness written by David Sadker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite decades of effort to create fair classrooms and schools, gender bias is alive and well, and in some ways growing. School practices continue to send boys and girls down different life paths, too often treating them not as different genders but as different species. Teachers and parents often miss the subtle signs of sexism in classrooms. Through firsthand observations and up-to-the-minute research, Still Failing at Fairness brings the gender issue into focus. The authors provide an in-depth account of how girls' and boys' educations are compromised from elementary school through college, and offer practical advice for teachers and parents who want to make a positive difference. The authors examine today's pressing issues -- the lack of enforcement for Title IX, the impact of the backlash against gender equity, the much-hyped "boys' crisis," hardwired brain differences, and the recent growth of singlesex public schools. This book documents how teaching, current testing practices, and subtle cultural attitudes continue to short-circuit both girls and boys of every race, social class, and ethnicity. Hard-hitting and remarkably informative, Still Failing at Fairness is "a fascinating look into America's classrooms" (National Association of School Psychologists).

Book Academic Approaches to Martial Arts Research Vol 1

Download or read book Academic Approaches to Martial Arts Research Vol 1 written by Michael DeMarco and published by Via Media Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As soon as its first issue was published, readers of the Journal of Asian Martial Arts knew that it was unique in providing reliable materials on the subject. The journal brought a clearer perspective of Asian martial traditions. It presented valuable details on the history, theory and practice of various styles. Of greater importance, the journal set a standard for scholarly research to build the field. This anthology conveniently assembles sixteen journal articles that contain useful academic tools for studying the combative arts. Each chapter will prove special to all interested in the intellectual side to the martial arts. What martial art do you wish to research? Is it really a “martial” art? Or is it a martially-inspired art, practiced only for health or for theatrical performance?—A number of chapters provide fine details for categorizing the variety of what we commonly refer to as “martial arts.” While demonstrating the complexity of the martial arts as a field of study, the authors provide insights and methods that actually clarify and facilitate any discussion of this fascinating subject. Other chapters focus on the martial arts as living culture. We learn about the physical side of these arts just as we learn about other aspects of culture, except that often the martial arts being taught are from Asia. It is extremely important to understand just how a foreign art enters and adapts to another culture minus much of its associated history and culture. The social implications are enormous as shown in some of the chapters. Anyone who practices an Asian martial art may be exposed to related cultural aspects, such as Oriental philosophy and social customs. These can have an effect on the practitioner’s character. When elements of different cultures are absorbed, their embodiment can be seen in the individual’s daily actions. The question of violence is paramount in this potentially activity. With proper instruction, chances are better for a practitioner to experience a self-transformation that improves character, nurturing qualities such as patience and respect. This anthology’s table of contents hints the in-depth material that fills nearly 300 pages. This publication is for those who take researching martial traditions very seriously.

This may be the only how-to performance book for singers that is equally valuable to magicians, comics, actors, public speakers, models, performance coaches, and trial lawyers. Why? Because it focuses on audience psychology. The book explains what every performer must do to seduce the camera and the audience, to keep the crowds enthralled, and turn listeners and viewers into loyal fans. The Dynamic Song Performance Skills method begins by reinforcing successful performance skills while re-directing unsuccessful ones. Pepper Jay and her coaching partner, John Michael Ferrari, guide students through the general aspects of vocal, physical, emotional, and mental song performance skills required of a successful professional singer, performer, recording artist and entertainer. Pepper Jay then hones the student's skills to perfection while teaching audience psychology skills. Each student receives customized coaching depending upon their talents and their expressed goals. What makes a singer a star? Pepper drills into students' heads that there are many excellent singers who never "make it." Over several decades, Pepper Jay has developed powerful song performance guidelines that, when followed by talent who remain true to themselves, result in impressive success. This text, Dynamic Performance Skills, The Singers Bible, is a guide to the fundamentals of song performance, directed to both the novice singer with dreams of fame and fortune, as well as the professional singer who wants to increase mastery of song performance skills and be at the top of their craft.

Book The Jerrie Mock Story

Download or read book The Jerrie Mock Story written by Nancy Roe Pimm and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this biography for middle-grade readers, Nancy Roe Pimm tells the story of Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock, the first woman to fly solo around the world. In her trusty Cessna, The Spirit of Columbus—also known as Charlie—she traveled from Columbus, Ohio, on an eastward route that totaled nearly twenty-three thousand miles and took almost a month. Overcoming wind, ice, mechanical problems, and maybe even sabotage, Mock persevered. Mock caught the aviation bug at seven years old, when she rode in a Ford Trimotor plane with her parents. In high school, she displayed a talent for math and science, and she was the only woman in her aeronautical engineering classes at Ohio State University. Although she then settled into domestic life, she never lost her interest in flying. What began as a joking suggestion from her husband to fly around the world prompted her to pursue her childhood dream. But the dream became a race, as another woman, Joan Merriam Smith, also sought to be the first to circle the globe. Even though Mock beat Smith and accomplished what her heroine Amelia Earhart had died trying to do, her feat was overshadowed by the Vietnam War and other world events. Now, Pimm introduces Mock to a new generation of adventurers.

Book Parkinson s Fighting Above My Weight

Download or read book Parkinson s Fighting Above My Weight written by John Pepper and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to make a case for believing that we Parkinson's Disease (Pd) patients have a conflict of interests with the medical world! I have had Pd symptoms since 1963, but was only diagnosed in 1992, possibly due to the intense exercise I did in the gym for twenty-three of those years before diagnosis. In 2002 I was able to stop taking any Pd medication and have lived a normal life for the past nineteen years. I am now 86 years old and am probably healthier than most men of my age. The conflict I refer to is caused by the medical world only TREATING Pd, while we, the Pd patients, want a CURE! We don't have a LIFE, it is a long miserable existence! This COVID Pandemic proves that for illnesses that kill us, the medical world has found a vaccine in double quick time for Polio, HIV, Ebola, SARS, and MERS. Pd & Alzheimer's don't kill us, so it makes financial sense to rather treat the chronic illnesses over lengthy periods of time, rather than giving the patient one, or possibly more, vaccines. The income received for treating chronic illnesses amounts to a massive amount, year after year after year! What fool would want to spend a fortunes on finding cures when illnesses can be treated and the income earned from making and selling the medication and administering it to the patient is massive. I understand that argument but, I as a patient know that my quality of life, and that of my family has got progressively worse until we eventually die. Not only do we cease to earn a living and fulfil a useful purpose in society but we are now a burden to everybody. I have heard from all and sundry that we are looking for a cure for Pd, but I have also heard that about the common cold, which has been going on for well over a century. If they really are looking then they are not very good at what they do! The moment a killer disease pops up, a vaccine is found in double quick time. With Covid-19 it took less than one year. The common denominator is whether the illness is lethal or chronic. If an illness is lethal, the only money to be made is in the short time before the patient dies. With chronic illnesses and the likes of the common cold, they can be treated over lengthy periods of time, which generates a lot of income for the medical world. I have been very fortunate. Ten years after being diagnosed with Pd I was able to stop taking the Pd medication and have lived a normal life for the past nineteen years. I am not very popular with the medical profession because I have gone way ourt of my way to tell the world that there is something we can do to keep Pd under control, which is the opposite of what the medical profession has been saying in the past, They say, quite rightly, there is no cure for Pd, but they don't want to tell patients what I have been doing over the past twenty-nine years that has helped me to thumb my nose at Pd, providing that I continue to do what I do. If I don't continue, because of other health problems that prevent me from doing so, then my symptoms quickly get worse. I am highlighting this conflict because I think pressure must be brought to bear on the medical world to get its act into gear. I want the whole Pd world to know what most of them are capable of doing and give them their life back again. They argue that "I don't have Pd, although all four neurologists, who have examined me, have all said I have Pd! The proof of this is the fact that if I stop what I am doing, my symptoms get worse. That means that whatever it is confirms that it does reverse my symptoms and they do come back again when I stop.
