Book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Pictorial Text

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Pictorial Text written by Richard J. Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson and the Pictorial Text explores the genesis, production and the critical appreciation of the illustrations to the fiction of Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson is one of the most copied and interpreted authors of the late nineteenth century, especially his novels Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. These interpretations began with the illustration of his texts in their early editions, often with Stevenson’s express consent, and this book traces Stevenson’s understanding and critical responses to the artists employed to illustrate his texts. In doing so, it attempts to position Stevenson as an important thinker and writer on the subject of illustrated literature, and on the marriage of literature and visual arts, at a moment preceding the dawn of cinema, and the rejection of such popular tropes by modernist writers of the early twentieth century.

Book Tremendous Trifles

Download or read book Tremendous Trifles written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous Trifles is comprised of 39 chapters, each functioning as their own essay or story. With whimsical, light-hearted prose, vivid figurative language, and unparalleled insight, Chesterton covers a variety of philosophical principles of everyday life. Chesterton often used ordinary events and objects to explain deeper matters. Using relatable and accessible examples, Tremendous Trifles also test biases and preconceived ideas, specifically in the cases of fairy tales and folk lore. Stories of these genres are passed down from generation to generation, changed each time they are told, yet usually framed more optimistically than the original tale. Chesterton encourages readers to question this, and examine the implications the example may have on the other stories they hear. Accompanying the suggestion to recognize bias, the importance of one’s point of view is also examined. In Tremendous Trifles, Chesterton uses a metaphor to explain perspective. There are only two ways to see the world—either as a giant, or as a nymph. One sees all the wonders of the world as a speck of dust, the other is in awe of a single blade of grass. While advocating for seeing the beauty in simple, everyday encounters, Tremendous Trifles raises thought-provoking questions and advises that sometimes a better life is just a change of perspective away. Containing both essays of importance and intrigue and stories of silly nature, Tremendous Trifles is the perfect combination of excitement and understanding. Written in a conversational and intimate format, Tremendous Trifles by G.K Chesterton is a collection of essays and stories that features philosophical theories of happiness, perspective, and narratives. Described as thought-provoking and humorous, Tremendous Trifles educates without the use intimidating or exclusive advice. While celebrating simplicity and encouraging people to find joy in the mundane, Tremendous Trifles uncovers truths about humankind that have remained relevant to modern audiences. This edition of Tremendous Trifles by G.K Chesterton is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a striking new cover design. With these accommodations, Tremendous Trifles is restored to modern standards while preserving its original ingenuity.

Book The Nineteenth Century Child and Consumer Culture

Download or read book The Nineteenth Century Child and Consumer Culture written by Dennis Denisoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the rise of consumer culture in the nineteenth century, children and childhood were called on to fulfill a range of important roles. In addition to being consumers themselves, the young functioned as both 'goods' to be used and consumed by adults and as proof that middle-class materialist ventures were assisting in the formation of a more ethical society. Children also provided necessary labor and raw material for industry. This diverse collection addresses the roles assigned to children in the context of nineteenth-century consumer culture, at the same time that it remains steadfast in recognizing that the young did not simply exist within adult-articulated cultural contexts but were agents in their formation. Topics include toys and middle-class childhood; boyhood and toy theater; child performers on the Victorian stage; gender, sexuality and consumerism; imperialism in adventure fiction; the idealization of childhood as a form of adult entertainment and self-flattery; the commercialization of orphans; and the economics behind formulations of child poverty. Together, the essays demonstrate the rising investment both children and adults made in commodities as sources of identity and human worth.

Book Romantic Actors Romantic Dramas

Download or read book Romantic Actors Romantic Dramas written by James Armstrong and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reinterprets British dramas of the early-nineteenth century through the lens of the star actors for whom they were written. Unlike most playwrights of previous generations, the writers of British Romantic dramas generally did not work in the theatre themselves. However, they closely followed the careers of star performers. Even when they did not directly know actors, they had what media theorists have dubbed "para-social interactions" with those stars, interacting with them through the mediation of mass communication, whether as audience members, newspaper and memoir readers, or consumers of prints, porcelain miniatures, and other manifestations of "fan" culture. This study takes an in-depth look at four pairs of performers and playwrights: Sarah Siddons and Joanna Baillie, Julia Glover and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edmund Kean and Lord Byron, and Eliza O'Neill and Percy Bysshe Shelley. These charismatic performers, knowingly or not, helped to guide the development of a character-based theatre—from the emotion-dominated plays made popular by Baillie to the pinnacle of Romantic drama under Shelley. They shepherded in a new style of writing that had verbal sophistication and engaged meaningfully with the moral issues of the day. They helped to create not just new modes of acting, but new ways of writing that could make use of their extraordinary talents.
