Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Mountain Stories Mccargo, in response to the proprietor's query of supper, said he had eaten and asked to be shown to his room. A boy, with cataracts on his eyes, who was carrying his grip, groped the way up stairs and unlocked the door of room 18, in the oldest part of the house. Originally it had been an enormous room, running from the front to the back of the house, but it had been di vided into two rooms by a partition made of a lot of door frames, fastened together with the knobs and locks still on them. The partition looked more like a hallway in a many-roomed apartment house in a big city than the dividing wall between two bed chambers in a coun try hotel. The furniture consisted of a wooden bed, which was painted green with red flower designs, and a wash stand and chair. There was blue paper but not a picture on the wall. In one corner were a couple of iron hooks for clothing. The house had been so added to that there was only one window left in this room. And it looked out on the stable yard, now used as a stor age ground for bark wagons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Middleburg Post, a leading newspaper in Snyder County, published each week a list of its subscribers who had attained the age of seventy years or over. Hundreds of old people. Men and women, sent in their ages, some of them close to the century mark. Most of them were born and many of them still lived in remote hamlets in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. In the wild regions that were the last stand of the old modes of living. The final frontier of the modern complex civilization that the tried so hard to destroy. They were born in a day when there were still a few Indians wandering about in the mountains. Spiritless old redmen who had ceased to mourn over the fair land that was once theirs. They were born in a day when a belief in ghosts and in the supernatural in general were more widely held. And when. In consequence. Religion seemed much more real. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years in the Rockies, Or, the Adventures of Isaac P. Rose of Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania Being personally acquainted with Mr. Isaac P. Rose, the hero of this narrative, and having had frequent opportunities of conversing with him on the subject of his Rocky Mountain expedition, I have by this means, and also from notes taken by himself, been enabled to lay before my readers one of the most interesting and thrilling adventures it has ever been my lot to record. Cooper and other novelists have, by the aid of vivid imagination, given us startling accounts of life in the far west, and of the perils and privations endured by the early pioneers; but it requires a great deal of imagination to depict incidents more startling and terrible than those that have actually occurred. It was a year later that the writer of these pages began the task of collecting the legends and folklore of the Juniata Valley, and in the valleys trib utary to it, such of it as survived into a materialistic age, or would be imparted by the holders Of the secret treasure-chest. It was not to be a final work, but merely to blaze the trail for others. Probably sixty legends were collected during the years 191 1, 1912 and 1913. The first twenty-five or thirty came from the northerly limits of the region, in the Seven Mountains. The second half were unearthed in the Juniata Valley proper, or in the little valleys contiguous to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Kings have reigned and princes flourished, empires rose and kingdoms fell, Men of power and fame have perished, and their number who can tell? Wars have ruined, famine wasted, pestilence in darkness stalked, Cities have been laid in ruins while the mighty earthquake rocked. Fires have raged on plain and forest, storms have howled along the shore; While the smaller towns have crumbled 'neath the cyclone's awful roar. Generals and brilliant captains who victorious armies led, All have gone to answer roll call in the bivouac of the dead. Men of genius, men of talent, men of culture, men of worth, All have fallen by the Reaper, mingled with the dust of earth. Hoary time has not been idle since the youthful Rolland led Fair young Phoebe from the altar to the sacred bridal bed. She a maid of twenty summers. He a youth of twenty-three; Setting sail on life's great ocean in the ship called Ecstasy. Which they hoped would bear them over to the fairy land of Fame. All her fruits are golden apples; Fortune's Goddess rules the same. Life to them was full of promise on that happy wedding day; She was young and fair and gentle, he was strong and proud and gay. Gardens had been devastated to adorn their flowery way, Now the bridal flowers have withered, thorns have sprung up by the way. She looks pale and thin and tired; now his hair is turning gray. Would you hear the thrilling story how he prospered in the strife? By what path his feet have wandered up and down the hills of life? Why he left his father's dwelling Where he was a mother's pride?
