Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Beekeeper, Vol. 10: April, 1935 Some of our Ants practically do this. Thousands of female ants leave their nests in August, become mated and as soon as they are on the ground bite their wings off. They may be hundreds of yards from the old nest and cannot find their way back. What happens? Merely this. They as newly mated queens are very attractive to worker ants of their kind. Very quickly a few gather about a young queen and become faithful to her and a new home is started. I really believe that our honeybees years and years ago went through that phase. When later colonies became very populous and large stores of honey some times existed, the old home had its attraction. Complete desertion did not take place. Queen rivalry began, and gradually the swarm act as we know it took place. A wonderful bit of evolution worthy the thought and study of every beekeeper. Download or read book The Pennsylvania Beekeeper Vol 4 written by Pennsylvania Beekeepers' Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Beekeeper, Vol. 4: April 1929 Apparently the disease has not worked its way into this valley from the outside in recent years. It has been here a long time. A system of management has been developed here that has a tendency to check the disease and at the same time to keep it alive. Those who use this system stick to a long hive with frames about a foot square. They firmly believe that all black combs are bad: that bees should not be allowed to try to raise brood the second year in the same comb. Every fall they take out the brood combs from the center of the hive along with any surplus honey and move the end frames to the center. The empty frames are replaced the next spring when the packing is removed from the ends of the hive. There is a tendency among these people to scald their hives or scrub them with hot salt water before hiving a new swarm. In the big valley are a number of centers of infection of such long stand ing that the owners seem to have no idea when the disease first appeared. Invariably they laid the trouble to spraying, insisting that before people sprayed one never heard of foulbrood. Such apiaries were for practical purposes abandoned. Overturned hives with exposed combs invited robbers and offered every possibility of infecting the entire neighborhood. Stray swarms hive themselves often enough to keep the infection alive. One infection center was located in a long narrow valley about half of which is covered with forest growth. A railroad and a highway run the length of this valley. The whole apiary of 13 colonies was infected and in addition a large pile of old combs was half hidden by weeds. He stated that he had foulbrood five years before but had cleaned it all up. About a mile west in an apiary of five was one light infection. Across the road was an apiary of 20 colonies and no infection. About. The same distance east was a good apiary the honey of which took prizes at the county fair the year before. The owner was not familiar. With foulbrood. Early last spring he found one of his colonies dead. He thought the simplest way to feed their honey to the other colonies was to let the bees help themselves. Accordingly he blocked up the hive second story lid. As a result about all his bees were dead when inspected in August. Download or read book The Pennsylvania Beekeeper Vol 12 written by Pennsylvania Beekeepers' Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Beekeeper, Vol. 12: April 1937 I have just spoken of two classes of beekeepers who are breeding queens, the commercial and the non-commercial, or the one who rears queens to sell and the one who rears queens largely for their use. This latter class far outnumbers the former, for most beekeepers have at some time or other tried their hand at rearing queens. Perhaps he had an unusually good queen from which he wished to get stock to head his other colonies, or not always being able to get queens when wanted, he decided to rear his own. Sometimes a large honey producer as Mr. Beaver runs a small queen rearing outfit. Or a beekeeper decides that since queens cost money, it won't cost him anything much but his time to rear his own. The ideal man to rear queens is one with plenty of information on and knowledge of the subject and money enough to be able to complete the job, insofar as he is able to go. Our experiment stations help us along this line. Government experts, bee specialists, bee journals all are of great help and for the most part the costs are small for all this help so that it is within the reach of all. Last, but not least, those beekeepers who make queen rearing a hobby supply an amazing amount of information and may their tribe increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Beekeeper, Vol. 11: April 1936 My method is to stencil the number on a piece of painted section tacked on the hive and supers. I weighed a colony daily the past season and would be willing to pay ten dollars for a similar record for the, past 17 years for which I have colony yields. It would enable me to predetermine in a measure at least the probable needs of supers and treatment. The high daily yield for 1935 was 14 1-2 pounds on June 1, from the locust. The 1935 crop of honey for this region was reported as fifty per cent normal. I, take a little consolation for improvement in methods of management since my crop for 1935 of lbs. Per colony was lbs. Higher than any average crop for 19 years and per cent of the peak crop of 1934. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
