Book Trekking the Giants Trail Alta Via 1 through the Italian Pennine Alps

Download or read book Trekking the Giants Trail Alta Via 1 through the Italian Pennine Alps written by Andy Hodges and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy's Alta Via 1, a 180km trail through the Italian Alps following the northern flank of the Aosta Valley, boasts magnificent views of the Alpine giants: Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin and Monte Rosa. Indeed, it is sometimes known as the Giants' Trail and can be combined with a sister-route, the Alta Via 2 (covered in a separate Cicerone guide), which runs along the southern flank of the valley, to form the Tor des Géants. Stretching from Donnas to Courmayeur, the Alta Via 1 offers fantastic alpine walking, with welcoming refuges and small hotels providing overnight accommodation (and great food) along the way. The guide presents the route in two sections, for the advantage of those who can't spare the full fortnight-plus needed to walk the entire AV1. The trail is described in 16 stages, with alternative stages covering some popular variants, including an optional detour to visit the famed monastery at the Great St Bernard Pass. Each stage includes clear route description and mapping, plus notes on local points of interest and accommodation options. An alternative itinerary, list of useful contacts, kitlist and glossary can be found in the appendices. The AV1 crosses cols of nearly 3000m as it traverses the side-valleys of the main Aosta Valley. Suited to those with some of experience of alpine trekking, the walking is demanding but without technical difficulty. And the rewards are many: quieter huts, breathtaking vistas and a chance to immerse yourself in fabulous mountain landscapes overlooked by soaring, snow-clad giants.

Book Martigny to Valle Delle Sesia via the Italian Valleys

Download or read book Martigny to Valle Delle Sesia via the Italian Valleys written by Christopher John Wright and published by . This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand Tour of Monte Rosa encircles most of the Pennine Alps. This title includes two titles - Vol 1: Martigny to Valle della Sesia (The Italian Valleys); Vol 2: Valle della Sesia to Martigny (The Swiss Valleys). Chris Wright's splendid text embraces all the many variants (especially in the Italian valleys) so as well as being the first English language guide to the entire tour, it can be used for smaller Pennine tours in Italy and Switzerland. Full account is taken of the places en route, accommodation and historical associations. The GTMR will certainly become the ultimate Alpine walk, outclassing all others. Strong walkers could do it in 13 days, but most walkers would prefer a more leisurely three weeks. Both volumes are copiously illustrated with photographs, maps and diagrams.

Book Tour of Mont Blanc and of Monte Rosa

Download or read book Tour of Mont Blanc and of Monte Rosa written by James D. Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tour of Mont Blanc and of Monte Rosa: Being a Personal Narrative, Abridged From the Author's "Travels in the Alps of Savoy," &C The glacier therefore moves progressively, or, if the reader pleases, it flows. The flood of water of the arrowy Rhone passes so swiftly, that the passenger almost giddily follows with his eye the bubbles which mark its flight-the lava stream must be watched for some seconds or minutes, perhaps hours, to mark its progress - the stately march of the glacier is yet a stage more slow; months and even years are but the units of division of its dial.
