Book excerpt: Elise Toussaint Hearne thought her devastating secret was safe--after all, her dark hair and complexion could mean she had French ancestry. But that did little to save her when it was discovered that her deceased mother was a runaway quadroon. Disowned and shamed by the Hearne family, Elise and her baby find themselves on their way to the wild frontier of Texas--as slave. When Elise inadvertently meets Benjamin Sinclair, a fiery evangelist determined to convert the lawless Texans, their lives become intertwined in the midst of tragedy--shattering their fragile existence and forcing them to discover the faith that sustains. This volume also includes the full-length novel Heaven's Road, the story of Micah Sinclair, the reckless but courageous stepson of Elise.

Marcellus, the magistrate, soon finds himself at odds with Siros, a powerful merchant and leader of the Order of Croesus, a sinister and secret organization that controls the city's commerce and politics. As Marcellus unwittingly begins to uncover a yet darker and more evil enterprise of the Order--the exploitation and persecution of the local Christian church--he finds himself drawn into the raging conflict between the laws of the empire he is sworn to serve and the faith of the fledgling sect. On a whirlwind ride through treachery, temptation and political intrigue, the magistrate braves calamities of all kinds in a quest for justice and truth, along the way finding unexpected allies among those who bear the curse of the empire. Filled with memorable characters and events, The Magistrate brims with heart-pounding action and thought-provoking messages that will leave a lasting impact on its readers. The adventure begins in Lykos Reborn, volume one of The Magistrate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE EARLY DAYS OF CHRISTIANITY was written to give some background to the New Testament by supplying context to circumstances that form the historical setting and information on people, places, and events that could help a Bible reader better understand and interpret the Bible. This is a study tool, a companion, partly historic and partly expository, to the whole of the New Testament Farrar hopes that by considering each book in connection with all that we can learn of its author, and of the circumstances under which it was written, he might perhaps contribute to a better understanding of the Scriptures.

Book excerpt: The classic study of the timeless relationship between literature and the visual arts In his search for a common link between literature and the visual arts, Mario Praz draws on the abundant evidence of mutual understanding and correspondence they have long shared. Praz explains that within literature, each epoch has “its peculiar handwriting or handwritings, which, if one could interpret them, would reveal a character, even a physical appearance,” and while these characteristics belong to the general style of a given period, the personality of the writer does not fail to pierce through. Praz contends that something similar occurs in art. He shows how the likeness between the arts within various periods of history can ultimately be traced to structural similarities that arise out of the characteristic way in which the people of a certain epoch see and memorize facts aesthetically. Mnemosyne, at once the goddess of memory and the mother of the muses, presides over this view of the arts. In illustrating her influence, Praz ranges widely through Western sources, providing an incomparable tour of the literary and pictorial arts.
