Book The Penguin History of the Church

Download or read book The Penguin History of the Church written by Owen Chadwick and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1990-06-28 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning the sixteenth century brought growing pressure within the Western Church for Reformation. The popes could not hold Western Christendom together and there was confusion about Church reform. What some believed to be abuses, others found acceptable. Nevertheless over the years three aims emerged: to reform the exactions of churchmen, to correct errors of doctrines and to improve the moral awareness of society. As a result, Western Europe divided into a Catholic South and Protestant North. Across the no man's land between them were fought the bitterest wars of religion in Christian historyThis third volume of ‘The Penguin History of the Church’ deals with the formative work of Erasmus, Luther, Zwingli and Calvin, and analyses the special circumstances of the English Reformation as well as the Jesuits and the Counter-Reformation

Book Robert Burns and Religion

Download or read book Robert Burns and Religion written by Walter McGinty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. This text examines the role of religion in the life of the poet Robert Burns. Incorporating previously unexplored sources, and taking into consideration contemporary work on Burns, and on Scottish literature and history, author J. Walter McGinty presents an account of Burns's personal religion and the factors that helped to form it. McGinty begins by discussing the recurring themes in Burns's religious writings: a belief in a benevolent God; a hankering after, if not a hope, that there might be a life after death; and a sense of his own accountability. He then presents for comparison the religious poetry of two of Burns's contemporaries, William Cowper and Christopher Smart, usefully extending the discussion of Burns beyond the purely Scottish context. Finally, McGinty provides portraits of some of the ministers of "The Church of Scotland's Garland-A New Song", followed by an analysis of Burns's religious poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were Catholicism’s greatest orators? What was the key to their effectiveness? Was it mere scholastic ability or spiritual inspiration? The answer is “both.” In this follow-up work, Father Ray E. Atwood examines the lives, theologies, and preaching examples of the Church’s greatest preachers. This book tells the story, in biographical form, of Catholic preaching from the Old Testament through today, concluding with the homilies of Benedict XVI. Masters of Preaching takes the reader around the world in search of homiletic gems. Readers will learn about the stories of familiar figures, such as Saint Gregory the Great, and less familiar figures, such as Monsignor Francis Friedl. Readers will also discover how these men moved their congregations to deeper faith and greater understanding of the mysteries of salvation. Two appendices at the end of the book serve as a terrific resource for those looking for practical illustrations of lectionary themes. This book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the subjects of public speaking and Church history.

Book Always Reforming

  • ISBN : 9780865546790
  • Pages : 414 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Always Reforming highlights the fact that in the modern era the notion of heresy has fallen apart. Every church has been declared heretical at some time or other by another church, and it is not the role of the historian to decide who is right or wrong on doctrinal issues. Christians have adapted to sweeping social changes, including scientific discoveries and changing world-views." "This volume attempts to uncover some of the hidden dynamics of faith within the many ways in which other Christians have tried to live out the gospel in an uncertain world. It also demonstrates that all human institutions, including churches, change over time."--Jacket.

Book The British

    Book Details:

  • ISBN : 1134981783
  • Pages : 363 pages

Download or read book The British written by Terence Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a source book for the study of religions in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It covers an important period in the history of religions in Britain, a period of challenge to religion and a period of change in the religious map of Britain. Each author is a specialist in a particular aspect if this history, and there are extensive bibliographies. The book demonstrates how pluralistic the map of religion has been in Britain, thereby challenging the view that Britain is and has been a predominantly single religion country. This religious pluralism is shown to apply within the Christian religion as much as to those movements outside Christianity. There are six contributors: Dr Sheridan Gilley, (Durham); Rev Ieuan P. Ellis, (Hull) ; Professor Anthony O. Dyson, (Manchester); Dr Kim Knott, (Leeds); Dr David Hempton, (Belfast); Dr Kenneth A Thompson, (The Open University).
