The project uses a systematic sociological approach to examine the effects of violence on these adolescents by including measures of adjustment outcomes resulting from the stress experienced in these harsh environments. Central to the analysis is the discovery of the linkages between risk factors relating to peer-, community-, and school-level victimization and patterns of coping among youth. To further develop the study, the project determines the perceived level of fear and exposure to violence among urban youth, followed by investigations of variations in adjustment outcomes (i.e., delinquency, anxiety, depression, academic achievement, self-esteem) as they relate to dimensions of violence. Finally, the study focuses on the extent to which coping strategies moderate risk factors among minority adolescents across levels of adjustment outcomes. While the significance of this work is the determination of the relationships between victimization, adjustment outcomes, and coping strategies in urban, minority adolescents in environments at higher risk for violence, the greatest implication of this research is to provide an understanding of the role of particular risk factors and coping strategies used to explain differences in delinquent and anti-social behavior among socially vulnerable youth, many of whom are victimized, and influenced, by delinquent peers. These understandings will provide an empirical basis on which to dismantle structural inequality, develop mental health interventions, reinforce societal- and community-level change, and promote coping behaviors to offset the detrimental impact of violence on the lives of marginalized youth in many communities. There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Dessa åskådare kan anta olika sociala roller: de kan assistera eller förstärka de som utsätter, försvara de som blir utsatta eller förbli passiva. Syftet med den här avhandlingen var att undersöka hur elevers åskådarbeteenden vid kränkningssituationer hänger samman med moraliskt disengagemang, elev-lärarrelationer och tillit till sin egen och klassens förmåga att försvara de som blir utsatta. Självrapporterade enkätdata samlades in från elever i årskurs 4–8 och analyserades med hjälp av olika statistiska metoder såsom flernivåanalys och strukturella ekvationsmodeller. Resultaten visar att de tre åskådarbeteendena hänger samman med faktorer på både individ- och klassnivå. Att assistera och förstärka de som utsätter hade starkast samband (positivt) med moraliskt disengagemang. Att försvara de som blir utsatta och att förbli passiv hade starkast samband (positivt respektive negativt) med självtillit. Resultaten pekar också på att det positiva sambandet mellan att försvara utsatta och självtillit går åt båda håll: försvararbeteenden predicerar självtillit och självtillit predicerar försvararbeteenden. I enlighet med socialkognitiv teori visar den här avhandlingen på betydelsen av att beakta ett komplicerat mönster av faktorer på olika nivåer när man studerar elevers åskådarbeteenden. Peer victimization most often occurs in the presence of bystanders, who play different social roles. They may assist or reinforce those who victimize, defend those who are victimized, or remain passive. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how students’ bystander behaviors in peer victimization are associated with moral disengagement, efficacy beliefs, and student-teacher relationship quality. Self-report questionnaire data were collected from students in grades 4 to 8, and were analyzed using different statistical methods, such as multilevel modeling and structural equation modeling. The findings show that the three types of bystander behaviors are associated with both individual- and classroom-level characteristics. Assisting and reinforcing those who victimize were most strongly associated (positively) with moral disengagement. Defending those who are victimized and remaining passive were most strongly associated (positively and negatively, respectively) with self-efficacy to defend victims. The findings also indicate that the positive association between students’ defending bystander behaviors and their self-efficacy to defend is bidirectional: defending predicts self-efficacy and self-efficacy predicts defending. In line with social cognitive theory, this thesis highlights the importance of considering a complex pattern of factors at different levels when addressing students’ bystander behaviors.

Book excerpt: Limited research attention has been given to the impact of main and interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization on social behaviors such as aggression and group entry behavior, which have been found to be important indices of social competence. The primary goals of this investigation were to examine whether main or interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization predicted: (1) initiation and receipt of aggression, (2) responses to aggression, (3) group entry strategies, and (4) group entry outcomes, within the naturalistic setting of the school playground. The current study examined 127 male and female, multi-ethnic children, between the ages of five to seven. Half of the sample experienced at least one episode of parental maltreatment (i.e., physical abuse and/or neglect), as determined by a substantiated report of child maltreatment. The other half of the sample included comparison children recruited from neighborhoods where the majority of the maltreated sample lived. Severity of peer victimization was assessed using the Victimization Scale. All children were unobtrusively observed for approximately 80 minutes on four specific behavioral styles and outcomes: (1) the initiation and receipt of aggression (i.e., bullying, instrumental, and reactive); (2) responses to aggression (i.e., resist, dependent, submit, constructive, ignore/avoid, and no responses); (3) group entry strategies (i.e., attention-getting, disruptive, self-referent, mimic, wait-and-hover, and person-group); and (4) group entry outcomes (i.e., successful, ignored, rejected, and interrupted). Main and interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization were hypothesized to predict these four groups of behavioral styles and outcomes. Hierarchical linear regression models did not reveal any main effects of maltreatment or peer victimization on the proposed behavioral styles or outcomes. However, there was a statistically significant maltreatment-peer victimization interaction for both resist responses (p = .03) and not responding to aggression (p = .01). Also, the maltreatment-peer victimization interaction approached significance for the receipt of reactive aggression (p = .06). Main and interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization were not predictive of group entry strategies or group entry outcomes. This study contributes to current understanding of behavioral styles of maltreated and peer victimized children in early elementary school that may place them at-risk for social adjustment difficulties.
