Book The Mexican Masked Wrestler and Monster Filmography

Download or read book The Mexican Masked Wrestler and Monster Filmography written by Robert Michael “Bobb” Cotter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any on-screen schmuck can take down a wolfman with a silver bullet. It takes a certain kind of hero to hoist that wolfman overhead into an airplane spin, follow with a body slam, drop an atomic elbow across his mangy neck, leg-lock him until he howls, and pin his furry back to the mat for a three-count. It takes a Mexican masked wrestler. Add a few half-naked vampire women, Aztec mummies, mad scientists, evil midgets from space, and a goateed Frankenstein monster, and you have just some of the elements of Mexican masked wrestler and monster movies, certainly among the most bizarre, surreal and imaginative films ever produced. This filmography features some of the oddest cinematic showdowns ever concocted--Mexican masked wrestlers battling monsters, evil geniuses and other ne'er-do-wells, be it in caves, cobwebbed castles or in the ring. From the 1950s to the 1970s, these movies were staples of Mexican cinema, combining action, horror, sex, science fiction and comedy into a bizarre amalgam aimed to please the whole family. Chapters examine the roots of the phenomenon, including the hugely popular masked wrestling scene and the classic Universal horror films from which Mexican filmmakers stole without compunction. Subsequent chapters focus on El Santo, Blue Demon, and Mil Mascaras, the three most prominent masked wrestlers; wrestling women; other less prominent masked wrestlers; and the insane mish-mash of monsters pitted against the heroes. Each chapter includes background information and a full filmography, and a wide assortment of striking illustrations--posters, lobby cards and other graphic material, some better than the movies they advertised--accompany the text.

Book Monster of the Andes

Download or read book Monster of the Andes written by Gist Hub and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-05-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the blood-soaked annals of serial killer lore, one name reigns supreme in sheer depravity and body count: Pedro Lopez, The Monster of the Andes. This remorseless child predator crisscrossed the remote indigenous villages of Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia for over a decade, raping and strangling over 300 young girls in ritualistic fashion. Yet despite the mind-numbing scale of his atrocities, Lopez's tale remains obscured from wider infamy - his unspeakable crimes carried out along society's periphery, targeting the most vulnerable and voiceless. This tome finally shines a searing light into the abyss, uncovering the root causes and societal failures that enabled a monster's reign of terror from 1969-1980. From the killing fields of La Violencia civil war that birthed him to the twisted psyche that reveled in extinguishing youthful "innocence," no stone is left unturned. These pages provide an uncensored glimpse into the institutional incompetence, bureaucratic apathy, and criminal injustice system that ultimately released the "werewolf" to vanish into the ether after merely a token prison stint. So where is the elusive Pedro Lopez today? Over 20 years since his last confirmed sighting in public, does the Monster of the Andes yet stalk from the shadows, forever outrunning the long arm of the law? Or did this immortal embodiment of evil ultimately meet a fitting demise at the hands of vigilantes, karma, or his own haunted damnation?

Book Monsters by Trade

  • Author : Lisa Surwillo
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2014-06-11
  • ISBN : 080479183X
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Monsters by Trade written by Lisa Surwillo and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transatlantic studies have begun to explore the lasting influence of Spain on its former colonies and the surviving ties between the American nations and Spain. In Monsters by Trade, Lisa Surwillo takes a different approach, explaining how modern Spain was literally made by its Cuban colony. Long after the transatlantic slave trade had been abolished, Spain continued to smuggle thousands of Africans annually to Cuba to work the sugar plantations. Nearly a third of the royal income came from Cuban sugar, and these profits underwrote Spain's modernization even as they damaged its international standing. Surwillo analyzes a sampling of nineteenth-century Spanish literary works that reflected metropolitan fears of the hold that slave traders (and the slave economy more generally) had over the political, cultural, and financial networks of power. She also examines how the nineteenth-century empire and the role of the slave trader are commemorated in contemporary tourism and literature in various regions in Northern Spain. This is the first book to demonstrate the centrality of not just Cuba, but the illicit transatlantic slave trade to the cultural life of modern Spain.

Book The Vanishing Frame

  • Author : Eugenio Claudio Di Stefano
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2018-08-03
  • ISBN : 1477316213
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book The Vanishing Frame written by Eugenio Claudio Di Stefano and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the postdictatorial era, Latin American cultural production and criticism have been defined by a series of assumptions about politics and art—especially the claim that political freedom can be achieved by promoting a more direct experience between the textual subject (often a victim) and the reader by eliminating the division between art and life. The Vanishing Frame argues against this conception of freedom, demonstrating how it is based on a politics of human rights complicit with economic injustices. Presenting a provocative counternarrative, Eugenio Claudio Di Stefano examines literary, visual, and interdisciplinary artists who insist on the autonomy of the work of art in order to think beyond the politics of human rights and neoliberalism in Latin American theory and culture. Di Stefano demonstrates that while artists such as Diamela Eltit, Ariel Dorfman, and Albertina Carri develop a concept of justice premised on recognizing victims’ experiences of torture or disappearance, they also ignore the injustice of economic inequality and exploitation. By examining how artists such as Roberto Bolaño, Alejandro Zambra, and Fernando Botero not only reject an aesthetics of experience (and the politics it entails) but also insist on the work of art as a point of departure for an anticapitalist politics, this new reading of Latin American cultural production offers an alternative understanding of recent developments in Latin American aesthetics and politics that puts art at its center and the postdictatorship at its end.

Book LGBTQ Intimacies in Southern Europe

Download or read book LGBTQ Intimacies in Southern Europe written by Ana Cristina Santos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book argues that Southern European countries offer valuable, though historically overlooked, knowledge regarding intimate citizenship. Guided by the fundamental sociological question of how change takes place and, concomitantly, how law and social policy adjust to and/or shape the practices and expectations of individuals in the sphere of intimacy, this edited volume explores partnering, parenting and friendship issues from the perspective of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people in Italy, Portugal and Spain. Chapters offer a cross-national understanding of the relationship between everyday practices of intimacy amongst LGBTQ people and national legal, political and policy contexts in terms of the recognition of otherwise ‘intimate strangers’. The book contributes to further theoretical and policy debates about citizenship, care and choice, as well as, more broadly, sexuality, welfare, health and justice. This book will be of interest to scholars across Gender and Feminist Studies as well as Citizenship Studies, Law, Policy, and Politics.

Download or read book Pedro and the Monster Eaters Pedro y los devoradores de monstruos written by Xequina María Berbér and published by Arte Público Press. This book was released on with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedro came from a family of artists who created papier-mâché sculptures. With newspaper, cardboard and glue, they made piñatas, masks and mojigangas, giant puppets used in parades and festivals in Mexico. As a boy, he helped his family by collecting newspapers in the neighborhood. When he got older, he began making the large figures himself. The family had to make new ones every year because all the mojigangas were burned after the events! One day, Pedro became very sick. He had a high fever, slept a lot and had very scary nightmares. In his dreams, the giant puppets came to life and chased him. But suddenly, fierce animals with long, sharp teeth and claws came to his defense and ate up all the monsters! The animals called themselves alebrijes. When he was well, he began to recreate the beasts from his dream using paper and glue; he painted his creations with bright colors and intricate patterns. Soon, people came from all over to buy Pedro’s monster eaters. Loosely based on the life of artist Pedro Linares, this bilingual picture book for young readers pairs the fascinating origin story of one of Mexico’s most well-known folk arts with striking illustrations of the magical creatures. This is a perfect choice for parents and teachers interested in sharing the world of art with their kids.
