Book A Pedestrian Route Choice Model Concerning Quantified Built Environment Factors

Download or read book A Pedestrian Route Choice Model Concerning Quantified Built Environment Factors written by Parham Hamouni and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis builds on a growing body of research that seeks to understand how the built-in environmental attributes of the road network influence pedestrian route choice. Better understanding of these factors can help promotion of walkability. The thesis uses a high-quality GPS dataset of pedestrian trips recorded between October 17 to November 21, 2016, through the MTL Trajet app developed at Concordia University. Trip route characteristics are obtained by matching the GPS traces to a detailed GIS network dataset of road attributes. Additionally, built-in environment factors were captured by scenery quantification and micro-level land use analysis using Google Places API. Scenery was quantified by employing computer vision and machine learning techniques, with help of Google Street View API and deep learning frameworks. A path-size multinomial logit model is used to assess the utility of road and user features. Additionally, to improve prediction accuracy, a set of supervised learning classification techniques, including decision tree, random forest and gradient boosting tree were examined. The analysis of the results shows that the variation in scenery has a significant impact on pedestrians route choice. Additionally, machine learning classification techniques showed significant improvement of the accuracy ratio in comparison to discrete choice modeling framework.

Book Measuring the Influence That Components Have on Pedestrian Route Choice in Activated Alleys

Download or read book Measuring the Influence That Components Have on Pedestrian Route Choice in Activated Alleys written by Samuel H. Gross and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores how cities have integrated formal planning into improving public space. Through a review of literature on the topic, this the paper identifies the potential design has to renovate narrow streets and alleys, within the public right of way. By preforming an assessment of plans and programs, this paper identifies the common themes or components that have been used by planners, architects, and engineers to improve the urban environment for pedestrians. Based on this information, a pilot study was created to measure the influence the most common components have on pedestrian route choice. The results are then compared to the information gathered from the assessed plans and programs. Suggestions for expanding the pilot study and other recommendations are presented upon the conclusion of this report.

Book Route Choice Wayfinding in Transport Networks

Download or read book Route Choice Wayfinding in Transport Networks written by P.H. Bovy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ever increasing number of opportunities, in every aspect of modem life, making choices becomes part of our daily routine. It is thus only natural that social scientists have started to study human choice behavior. Early efforts focused on modeling aggregate choice patterns of home buyers, shoppers, travelers, and others. Later studies, aiming to achieve more realistic results, have concentrated on simula ting disaggregate behavior. The most recent approach in choice research is the so-called Discrete Choice Modeling. It is a front-line area mainly in contemporary transportation, geography, and behavioral research. It focuses on individuals' decision-making processes regarding the choice of destinations, modes, departure times, and routes. Considerable research has been done on identifying and quantify ing the general rules governing the individuals' choice behavior, but to the best of our knowledge there is no single book that solely deals with route choice. The study of travelers' route choice in networks is primarily oriented towards gaining insight into their spatial choice behavior. How do people choose routes in a network, what do they know, what do they look for, which road characteristics playa role? On the basis of this information it is possible to design quantitative models aimed at predicting the use of routes dependent on the characteristics of the routes, those of the surrounding environment, and those of the travelers. In this way, traffic flows in the network can be calculated and the network performance can be evaluated.

Book Estimating a Toronto Pedestrian Route Choice Model Using Smartphone GPS Data

Download or read book Estimating a Toronto Pedestrian Route Choice Model Using Smartphone GPS Data written by Gregory David Lue and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City planning has an emphasis on working towards creating walkable cities with boulevards, wide sidewalks, and social spaces. This study uses revealed preference GPS data collected through a smartphone-based travel survey and discrete choice modelling techniques to determine pedestriansâ preferences towards street infrastructure, built environment, and land use. A path size logit model with stochastic route choice generation choice set was used for this model. The results of the model showed that distance, the number of turns, the number of signalized intersections, and distance along links with sidewalks on both sides of the street were significant variables in the route choice model. Turns are found to be equivalent to an additional 32m, signalized intersections are equivalent to a reduction of 34m, and travel along streets with sidewalks on both sides of the road is perceived as 33% shorter than streets with other sidewalk conditions.

Book Pedestrian Use of Urban Alleys

Download or read book Pedestrian Use of Urban Alleys written by William Riggs and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many cities have begun to take advantage of the alleys within their jurisdictions. These cities have developed formal master plans and programs that enhance or “activate” alleys through renovations, and some have started to explore if they can be integrated into the local transportation network. This paper explores how cities have begun to integrate alleys into local transportation networks by assessing local plans, coding and assessing themes, and then conducting a pilot survey to measure the influence the most common components have on pedestrian route choice. It finds that while many plans emphasize sustainability features of alleyways, when individuals are surveyed, they often indicate other factors that drew them there including attractive destinations, public art or activities and the connectivity of these alleys within their existing travel. This offers lessons for how cities can integrate alleys into travel and renovate narrow streets to be more livable.
