This book was released on 1989 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the literature on recent research concerning peatlands chemistry and interactions with acid deposition, focusing on the chemical interactions within the soil, since these control the retention or release of mineral acidity. Other topics addressed include the relative roles of organic vs. mineral acids in the acidity budget of peatlands, nitrogen and sulphur dynamics, and the mobility of other ions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1980's, research has continued to clarify and improve our understanding of the problern of the ecological impact of acidic precipitation. From September 15-20, 1985, Canada convened the the Muskoka Symposium on Acidic Precipitation to review progress and help chart the direction of future studies. The Conference was held in central Ontario, Canada, a region of heavy sulphate deposition where aquatic effects are evident. Approximately 700 people attended, over 500 of whom were research scientists. Over 400 papers were presented. Nearly 200 of the papers are included in these proceedings, which tagether give the present state of the art of acid rain research. The Conference focused on atmospheric science and aquatic and terrestrial effects. I have made some general observations on progress in clarifying issues and linkages between these areas of research. Out standing issues which require a great deal more work are identified. These are my views, influenced by personal bias and limited by my expertise. Atmospheric Seiences Three aspects were covered: measurement techniques, the actual measure ments, and source-receptor relationships.

Book Chemistry of Wetlands and Their Effect on Receiving Waters in Kejimkujik National Park Nova Scotia

Download or read book Chemistry of Wetlands and Their Effect on Receiving Waters in Kejimkujik National Park Nova Scotia written by J. A. Wood and published by Regina : Environment Canada, Inland Waters Directorate. This book was released on 1991 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specific objectives: 1) Identify major wetland areas within each of the three calibrated drainage basins in the park; 2) Determine the extent and area of organic terrain in each of the basins; 3) Classify the wetlands and provide a general description for each including their vegetation characteristics; 4) Establish whether there is a seasonal aspect to wetland soil chemistry in the area; 5) Determine if there are relationships which can be established between the seasonal changes in drainage water chemistry and seasonal changes in wetland soil chemistry; 6) Determine if the dominant classes of wetlands found within the park can be determined chemically; 7) determine if proximity to the different classes exerts a local effect on drainage water chemistry.

Book Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry A Dual Perspective

Download or read book Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry A Dual Perspective written by Patricia M. Glibert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights perspectives, insights, and data in the coupled fields of aquatic microbial ecology and biogeochemistry when viewed through the lens of collaborative duos – dual career couples. Their synergy and collaborative interactions have contributed substantially to our contemporary understanding of pattern, process and dynamics. This is thus a book by dual career couples about dual scientific processes. The papers herein represent wide-ranging topics, from the processes that structure microbial diversity to nitrogen and photosynthesis metabolism, to dynamics of changing ecosystems and processes and dynamics in individual ecosystems. In all, these papers take us from the Arctic to Africa, from the Arabian Sea to Australia, from small lakes in Maine and Yellowstone hot vents to the Sargasso Sea, and in the process provide analyses that make us think about the structure and function of all of these systems in the aquatic realm. This book is useful not only for the depth and breadth of knowledge conveyed in its chapters, but serves to guide dual career couples faced with the great challenges only they face. Great teams do make great science.

Book The Environmental Chemistry of Aluminum

Download or read book The Environmental Chemistry of Aluminum written by Garrison Sposito and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Chemistry of Aluminum provides a comprehensive, fundamental account of the aqueous chemistry of aluminum within an environmental context. An excellent reference for environmental chemists and scientific administrators of environmental programs, this book contains material reflecting the many recent changes in this rapidly developing discipline. The first three chapters discuss the most fundamental aspects of aluminum chemistry: its quantitation in soils and natural waters, including speciation measurements, and its stable chemical forms, both as a dissolved solute and in a solid phase. These chapters emphasize both critical assessments of and definitive recommendations for laboratory methodologies and measured thermodynamic properties relating to aluminum chemistry. The next four chapters in The Environmental Chemistry of Aluminum build on this foundation to provide details of the polymeric chemistry of aluminum: its polynuclear and colloidal hydrolytic species in aqueous solution, its complexes with natural organic ligands, including humic substances, and its role as an adsorptive and adsorbent in surface reactions. These chapters are grounded in experimental results rather than conceptual modeling. The final three chapters describe the chemistry of aluminum in soils, waters, and watersheds. These chapters illustrate the problems of spatial and temporal variability, metastability, and scale that continue to make aluminum geochemistry one of the great challenges in modern environmental science.
