Book Control of Pear Psylla in Pears and Black Stem Borer in Apples with Trunk Injection

Download or read book Control of Pear Psylla in Pears and Black Stem Borer in Apples with Trunk Injection written by Celeste Elizabeth Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of pesticides to produce fruit crops is essential to the economic success of farmers. Consumers have a high standard for acceptable fruit, and pesticides are key to the farmer's ability to produce marketable fruit. In the past 50 years, there has been a shift towards using safer active ingredients to protect both humans and the environment. The government continues to ban unsafe, broad-use pesticides, and label new chemistries with more specific active ingredient targets. If this trend towards more responsible pesticide usage continues, there will be a need for more direct targeting of the pesticides on the crops. The most common method of pesticide application is airblast spraying. This method has huge drawbacks. It has been shown that with airblast application, less than 0.1% of pesticides applied to crops reaches its target pest. Most of the pesticide is lost to drift, leaching, and degradation by the sun, and risks exposure to non-target populations. Trunk injection should be considered as an alternative delivery method for pesticides. It delivers the pesticide directly into the tree's system without losing pesticide to drift and is contained within the tree. Trunk injection has been effectively used to control foliar pests in apple trees and wood boring pests such as the emerald ash borer. One injection can provide multiple seasons of control. In the current two studies, we use trunk injection to apply insecticides and evaluate their efficacy at controlling two very different orchard pests, the pear psylla in pear and the black stem borer in apple. The objective of the first study is to compare the efficacy of abamectin and azadirachtin in the control of pear psylla in pear using two different application methods, airblast and trunk injection. Trunk injections of abamectin and azadirachtin were compared to airblast applications of equal labeled rates on 33-year-old Bartlett Pear trees (Pyrus communis L., var "Bartlett"). The abamectin and azadirachtin trunk injected treatments controlled pear psylla as well or better than the airblast applied treatments. Trunk injecting from the first season provided a moderate level of control into the second season, one year after the injections. The objective of the second study is to evaluate the efficacy of two insecticides, emamectin benzoate and azadirachtin, and injection timing fall and spring, on their ability to control BSB in apple trees with simulated topworking and ethanol injection as an attractant.

Book Theory and Practice of Biological Control

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Biological Control written by C.B. Huffaker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory and Practice of Biological Control covers conventional biological control achievement in the major crop types and in public health problems. Composed of five sections encompassing 28 chapters, this book discusses the basic information concerning developments in other biologically based alternatives to chemical pesticides. The first two sections discuss the philosophy, theory, scope, history, and the biological and ecological bases of biological control. These sections also deal with the impact of predators and the host relationships of parasitoids and pathogens. The following section presents the methodological aspects of biological control. Discussions on the variability of natural enemies as encountered in biological control work; the fitness of individuals and populations; the ways fitness is being or can be influenced by importation procedures; and the ability of imported natural enemies to adapt to the new environment are included. The fourth section outlines the accomplishments of conventional biological control in various types of crops, forests, and public health areas. Lastly, the various components of integrated pest control other than conventional biological control that forms the essential ways used in the integrated control approach are covered in the last section of the book. This book is an ideal source for plant pathologists and researchers, microbiologists, parasitologists, and public health professionals.

Book Potential Use of Acoustics in Pear Psylla Cacopsylla Pyricola Integrated Pest Management

Download or read book Potential Use of Acoustics in Pear Psylla Cacopsylla Pyricola Integrated Pest Management written by Dowen Mae Ibarra Jocson and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) employs both chemical and non-chemical strategies. In both cases, foundational research is required and necessary to create an effective management tool. This dissertation explores the development of an alternative, non-chemical management tool for pear psylla (Cacopsylla pyricola) exploiting their vibrational communication. The first chapter reviews pear psylla biology and history as well as the study of vibrational communication, most recently coined as Biotremology. In the first manuscript, I characterized the mating songs of male and female pear psylla adults and assessed whether temperature and presence of conspecific individuals altered the male signal characteristics. I show that some song traits are affected by temperature while some are not. Further, that experience with the opposite sex increases the likelihood of males producing a vibrational mating song. The second manuscript explores three vibrational delivery methods to determine the efficacy of mating disruption (MD) in pear psylla employing the two MD hypotheses: competitive versus noncompetitive MD. My results showed that white noise (noncompetitive MD) was effective in reducing mating rates in pear psylla, but only when played directly to the plant substrate. Male song playback (competitive MD) was more effective than the other types of playback when going through the air using speakers. This suggests that we may be able to employ both types of mating disruption through different delivery methods. In the third manuscript, I set out to test vibrational playbacks as an enhancement to traps for monitoring and as a tool to disrupt mating in pear psylla in an orchard setting. The results showed that vibrational playback enhanced sticky card trap catch and was female-biased. Vibrational playback was more effective at reducing offspring when using white noise as vibrational playback, especially in the Anjou pear variety. The results from these experiments will contribute to the body of knowledge and tools for pear psylla IPM and as a basis for developing a similar tool for other pests that use vibrational communication.
