Book The Control of Peach Brown Rot and Scab Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Control of Peach Brown Rot and Scab Classic Reprint written by William Moore Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-16 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control of Peach Brown-Rot and Scab During the past few years the Bureau of Plant Industry has endeavored to develop a fungicide that could be safely used on the peach during the growing season to prevent some of the diseases of the fruit and foliage. Various copper compounds in both liquid and dust form were tested' without satisfactory results. Experiments with sulphur in various forms Showed that the soluble sulphids were even more caustic than Bordeaux mixture, and no encouragement was obtained from the work until the so-called self-boiled lime sulphur mixture was tested. In the experiments of 1907, the results of which were published in Circular No. 1 of the Bureau of Plant Industry, it was found that self-boiled lime-sulphur could be used as a spray on the peach without injury to fruit or foliage. Brown-rot infections were held down to 10 per cent of the crop, while 73 per cent of the fruit on the unsprayed trees rotted. The same treatment prevented the peach scab, or black-spot, and some leaf diseases. Experiments conducted by the writers during 1908 at Marshallville, Ga, Bentonville, Ark, and Neoga, Ill., verified the previous year's results and gave sufficient data to warrant the recommendation of this mixture for general use in peach-growing districts where brown rot and scab are prevalent. The results of the 1908 experiments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Experiments on the Control of the Plum Curculio Brown Rot and Scab Attacking the Peach in Georgia

Download or read book Experiments on the Control of the Plum Curculio Brown Rot and Scab Attacking the Peach in Georgia written by Oliver I. Snapp and published by . This book was released on 1927 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most severe infestation on record of the plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar Hbst.) on the peach was experienced in Georgia in the season of 1920. The very heavy infestation of that year also provided innumerable punctures in the skins of the fruit, through which the brown-rot fungus, Sclerotinia fructicolo gained easy access and frequently finished the work of destruction begun by the curculio. At the urgent request of the growers, the Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture established a field station at Fort Valley, Ga. to undertake a study of the life history and control of the curculio. In the spring of 1921, the Georgia State Board of Entomology and the Federal Bureau of Plant Industry became cooperating agencies. The experiments were continued through four consecutive seasons at Fort Valley. The present publication is a report of the results obtained each season, together with recommendations relating to spraying and dusting for the control of the curculio, brown rot, and scab in sections of the South where these pests are particularly destructive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Scab At this time it was not known to the Writer that the latter had been suspected by others as the permanent stage of the apple scab fungus. An examination of literature, however, showed that Goethe as early as 1887 had suggested the relationship of the scabs of pears and apples to mature stages on the dead leaves that Bre feld in 1891 figured a temporary spore stage obtained from a Ven turia on pear that was similar to the leaf scab of that plant and that Aderhold, 1894 and later, had made a very comprehensive study of the scabs of apple, pear, and cherry and had connected them with species of Venturias that develop on the dead leaves of these hosts. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dusting and Spraying Peach Trees After Harvest for Control of the Plum Curculio During the time this work was under way, about 75 per cent more beetles were collected from plat 3, which received no treatments, than from plat 2, one of the treated lats. This is very interesting, since Table 1 shows that plat 2 had a heavier curculio infestation than plat 3 before any dust was applied. The average number of beetles per tree at the close of the experiment in each plat was found from Table 4 to be as follows: Plat 1 dusted Aug. 12 and Plat 2 dusted Aug. 12) Plat 3 (no treatment) Comparing with Table 1, the average decrease on plat 1 was beetle per tree, the average decrease on plat 2 was beetle per tree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Peach Blight The present publication aims to present the results of three years' experience and experimentation in the control of this trouble, showing the almost absolute success with which the disease has been controlled by treatment. The work has been unusually satisfactory in this respect, and it has apparently been fully demonstrated that by proper attention the grower can fully protect his trees and crop from the effects of the blight at a minimum expense. Book The Role of Zinc Sulfate in Peach Sprays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Role of Zinc Sulfate in Peach Sprays Classic Reprint written by Kenneth John Kadow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Role of Zinc Sulfate in Peach Sprays The Irvington experiment was conducted in the E. C. Riechman orchard, chosen for several reasons: the trees were well pruned and cultivated; the soil type, and consequently tree size and vigor, were remarkably uniform; general tree vigor was rather low, because the owner, discouraged by repeated crop failures resulting from late spring frosts and winterkilling of fruit buds, had not maintained proper soil fertility; bacterial Spot was present and usually caused severe defoliation; peach scab, too, was usually present but was seldom severe. All these conditions in combination made the Riechman orchard especially suitable for the spray tests. Each plot except Plots 1 and 4 received five summer sprays at two-week intervals. Only four sprays were applied to Plot 4, the fifth being omitted. Plot 1, the absolute check, received no spray or dust. The Sprays applied are described in Spray Schedule No. 3 (page 255) and the results of the experiment are given in Table 1. An examination of Table 1 shows that of the fruits inspected on Plot 1 (the absolute check) 462, or percent, were infected with peach scab. No peach was recorded as diseased unless it showed three or more scab lesions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
