Book Paz de la Huerta

Download or read book Paz de la Huerta written by and published by Damiani Limited. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer Alexandra Carr met Paz de la Huerta--the actress and Boardwalk Empire star--in New York in 2007, shortly before Paz became the celebrity she is today, and they soon agreed to collaborate on a photo project. They began shooting in the fall of 2008, often using Paz's small West Village apartment as a backdrop--which was mercifully well heated throughout that especially cold New York winter. A gorgeous, linen-bound volume, The Birds Didn't Die over the Winter explores themes of love, loneliness and the difficult transition from youth into relative maturity. As Carr recalls, "it was made during a turbulent time in Paz's life and her life is a subtext in an otherwise imagined reality. We would discuss a character and direction beforehand and then Paz would play out these roles partly of made up characters and of favorite scenes from films each shoot." Paz is a charismatic subject throughout the book, at once fearless, sexual and vividly present, moving fluidly between roleplay and apparent candor. Carr explains the title: "[Paz] called one morning in the spring saying she had an idea for what we should call the book. She said she woke up and heard birds outside her window. She couldn't believe they had survived such an abominable winter. It was a perfect metaphor for the book."

Now Terry Tempest Williams, the author of the environmental classic Refuge and the beloved memoir When Women Were Birds, returns with The Hour of Land, a literary celebration of our national parks, an exploration of what they mean to us and what we mean to them. From the Grand Tetons in Wyoming to Acadia in Maine to Big Bend in Texas and more, Williams creates a series of lyrical portraits that illuminate the unique grandeur of each place while delving into what it means to shape a landscape with its own evolutionary history into something of our own making. Part memoir, part natural history, and part social critique, The Hour of Land is a meditation and a manifesto on why wild lands matter to the soul of America.

Book Bringing Aztlan to Mexican Chicago

Download or read book Bringing Aztlan to Mexican Chicago written by Jose Gamaliel Gonzalez and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing Aztlán to Mexican Chicago is the autobiography of Jóse Gamaliel González, an impassioned artist willing to risk all for the empowerment of his marginalized and oppressed community. Through recollections emerging in a series of interviews conducted over a period of six years by his friend Marc Zimmerman, González looks back on his life and his role in developing Mexican, Chicano, and Latino art as a fundamental dimension of the city he came to call home. Born near Monterey, Mexico, and raised in a steel mill town in northwest Indiana, González studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Notre Dame. Settling in Chicago, he founded two major art groups: El Movimiento Artístico Chicano (MARCH) in the 1970s and Mi Raza Arts Consortium (MIRA) in the 1980s. With numerous illustrations, this book portrays González's all-but-forgotten community advocacy, his commitments and conflicts, and his long struggle to bring quality arts programming to the city. By turns dramatic and humorous, his narrative also covers his bouts of illness, his relationships with other artists and arts promoters, and his place within city and barrio politics.

Book May I Come In

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wendy Goodman
  • Publisher : Abrams
  • Release : 2018-09-25
  • ISBN : 1683353293
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book May I Come In written by Wendy Goodman and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York magazine’s interiors editor shares some of her most memorable house profiles in this stunning and inspiring visual tour. For May I Come In?, design editor extraordinaire Wendy Goodman visits seventy homes that express their owners’ spirit and passions. In this pantheon, imagination and originality hold sway: Artists and eccentrics are the equals of aristocrats and the mandarins of design. Alba Clemente’s closet is a Renaissance theater; Amy Sedaris built a playroom (but not for children); Andrew Solomon houses his guests in an igloo; Richard Avedon’s private walls were bulletin boards; Kathy Ruttenberg’s house is an animal kingdom; Jay Maisel called a former bank with seventy-two rooms home. Every room has a story to tell and a purpose for being. A self-described design hunter, Goodman spent thirty years seeking extraordinary living spaces. In her long career, she has found three things to be true. The first is that curiosity and never giving up will get you everywhere. The second is what Diana Vreeland stated best when she wrote, “Few things are more fascinating than the opportunity to see how other people live during private hours.” The third is that houses never lie. These principles underscore her search for individuality, human interest, and authenticity in design. May I Come In? is profusely illustrated with superb images by leading interior photographers, as well as Goodman’s own snapshots and memorabilia related to her quests. It is an irresistible visual record of the art of living by one of its most astute observers. “Page after page reveals interiors that practically vibrate with charisma, while others wax a poetic minimalism that, despite a lack of things, overwhelm with grace.” —Vogue “When it comes to the New York design scene, Wendy Goodman is positively an institution.” —Town & Country

Book Tomb for 500 000 Soldiers

Download or read book Tomb for 500 000 Soldiers written by First Last and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guyotat's unique elision of brutal warfare and sexual ecstasy is regularly claimed as the greatest French novel of modern times. Compacting together elements from mythology, Lautreamont's Maldoror and Luis Bunuel's film Los Olvidados, he assembled a vision of contemporary life as a relentless display of slavery, prostitution and degradation, in which only catastrophic eruptions of atrocity and the delirious intervention of depraved sex acts can possess meaning for the book's lacerated human figures.

Book Reckoning

    Book Details:
  • Author : Linda Hirshman
  • Publisher : Houghton Mifflin
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 1328566447
  • Pages : 341 pages

Download or read book Reckoning written by Linda Hirshman and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2019 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first history--incisive, witty, fascinating--of the fight against sexual harassment, from the author of the New York Times bestseller Sisters in Law Linda Hirshman, acclaimed historian of social movements, delivers the sweeping story of the struggle leading up to #MeToo and beyond: from the first tales of workplace harassment percolating to the surface in the 1970s, to the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal--when liberal women largely forgave Clinton, giving men a free pass for two decades. Many liberals even resisted the movement to end rape on campus. And yet, legal, political, and cultural efforts, often spearheaded by women of color, were quietly paving the way for the takedown of abusers and harassers. Reckoning delivers the stirring tale of a movement catching fire as pioneering women in the media exposed the Harvey Weinsteins of the world, women flooded the political landscape, and the walls of male privilege finally began to crack. This is revelatory, essential social history.
