Book Pause Before the Pulpit

Download or read book Pause Before the Pulpit written by William W. Helland and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of devotionals opens up the scriptures and serves a meal that nurtures the life with God. Helland is well acquainted with the needs of pastors, and through these pages he serves as a pastor's pastor. The book has the added value of speaking to the pastor the Word of God while he is preparing to speak to others. Those who use this book will be enriched and blessed through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Eugene L. Boe Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology Lutheran Brethren Seminary Today's busy pastors must cope with a diverse range of physically and emotionally draining tasks. Yet as they balance the many competing demands on their time, the essential element for maintaining a vital and successful ministry is carving out time for their own spiritual regeneration. Before pastors can effectively proclaim the Good News to the people in the pews, they must attend to their ongoing relationship with the God whom they serve. Based on each Sunday's epistle and gospel texts from Cycle B of the Revised Common Lectionary, this collection of prayerful reflections specifically addresses the spiritual needs of the clergy. Rather than a primer on how to preach the text, these devotions explore what the scripture passages have to say about the personal lives of pastors and their public ministry. It's an ideal resource to begin weekly sermon preparation with, as each thoughtful contemplation prepares the heart for faithful preaching of God's Word. But Pause Before The Pulpit isn't just for pastors -- these devotions will also strengthen and spiritually encourage anyone actively involved in lay ministry. Bill Helland has written a wonderful devotional companion which gives inspiration, hope, and commitment. Every pastor should have a copy of this book in his study -- it is a must-read before he steps into the pulpit on Sunday morning. Gaylord T. Gunhus Chaplain (Major General) USA (retired) Underwood, Minnesota Bill Helland talks with pastors who give of themselves in lifting people up to the Lord -- and he invites them to talk back. I suggest reading these devotionals early in the week. Helland's questions, self-disclosures, and sharing of God's Word will nourish you as you prepare sermons, plan worship, play with your family, pray over your people, and walk in fellowship with God. Joel R. Egge President Church of the Lutheran Brethren William W. Helland has been a pastor in the Church of the Lutheran Brethren of America for the past fifteen years, serving parishes in Minnesota and South Dakota. A former locksmith and dairy farmer, Helland is a graduate of the Lutheran Brethren Seminary.

Too many men see the biblical hero Samson as their model for manhood--a rugged individualist of the highest order. Yet, Samson's solitary successes were eventually overcome by moral weaknesses. Larkin, through the story of his own past and the stories of those in The Samson Society, offers a radical, refreshing alternative.

Book excerpt: "I love everything that Scott Sauls writes." -- Christine Caine What if Christians became the best advertisement for Jesus? Jesus said his followers would be a light to the world and a city on a hill--a warmly inviting, neighbor-loving, grace- and truth-filled destination for all. He envisioned his followers as life-giving neighbors, bosses, employees, and friends, the kind of people who return insults with kindness and persecution with prayers. Rooted in biblical convictions, they would extend love, empathy, and care to one another as well as to those who don't share their beliefs. Over time their movement would become irresistible to every nation, tribe, and tongue. Irresistible Faith is a blueprint for pursuing this vision in our current moment, of redeemed individuals and a renewed community working for a restored world. This is a way of being that gives a tired, cynical world good reason to pause and reconsider Christianity--and to start wishing it was true. "I miss the kind of church Scott describes in this book, and I don’t think I am alone." -- Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz and Building a StoryBrand "An important call to resist the urge to lobby and position ourselves, but rather to be driven by gospel-powered love." -- Raechel Myers, founder and CEO of She Reads Truth "An antidote to much that is wrong with our Western, American version of Christianity. Book Preaching as Paying Attention

Download or read book Preaching as Paying Attention written by Edward Foley and published by Liturgy Training Publications. This book was released on 2021-07-10 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Ed Foley―priest, preacher, and teacher―invites preachers to an awareness of the world and the people around them as a lens for preaching God's Incarnate Word and inviting people into the Paschal Mystery. He maintains that paying attention is a key to theological reflection. When pondering a work of art or a catastrophe, the preacher asks, “Where is God in all of this?” and “How does my preaching invite people to respond to that presence?” Fr. Foley presents excerpts of his own homilies and references to poets, scientists, and other resources―some a bit surprising―as models and suggestions that might draw a preacher’s attention as a sign of God present and active in our midst. In short, this book offers a mindset, not a method, for preachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning author and presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s dynamic history of Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft and the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. Winner of the Carnegie Medal. Doris Kearns Goodwin’s The Bully Pulpit is a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft—a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country’s history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources. The muckrakers are portrayed through the greatest group of journalists ever assembled at one magazine—Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens, and William Allen White—teamed under the mercurial genius of publisher S.S. McClure. Goodwin’s narrative is founded upon a wealth of primary materials. The correspondence of more than four hundred letters between Roosevelt and Taft begins in their early thirties and ends only months before Roosevelt’s death. Edith Roosevelt and Nellie Taft kept diaries. The muckrakers wrote hundreds of letters to one another, kept journals, and wrote their memoirs. The letters of Captain Archie Butt, who served as a personal aide to both Roosevelt and Taft, provide an intimate view of both men. The Bully Pulpit, like Goodwin’s brilliant chronicles of the Civil War and World War II, exquisitely demonstrates her distinctive ability to combine scholarly rigor with accessibility. It is a major work of history—an examination of leadership in a rare moment of activism and reform that brought the country closer to its founding ideals.

Download or read book Break the Violent Fetters written by Joshua Khatena and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetter: (noun) "a chain or manacle used to restrain a prisoner." In Buddhist teachings there are said to be ten "fetters" (samyojana) which hold back our progress in this life. In 2009 Joshua laid in a Beijing hostel room, 750 yards away from Tiananmen Square, for 2 days, waiting for his friend to leave China, so that he could kill himself for being gay. The author prayed to God for 15 years to heal the so-called "sinful desires." In that hostel room he began to realize there was never any sin to begin with. This book is told through the author's personal experiences growing up in the Christian American South; before expanding into the broader patriarchal, political, religious, and historical reasons that have caused so much unnecessary confusion & pain for individuals in the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. Lessons of empowerment are interspersed with poetry and photography by the author. Philosophical reasoning and quantum consciousness are discussed as the author broadens a blueprint of hope for individuals reclaiming their personal freedom. From 2012-2018 the author worked as a respected investigator for Child Protective Services of Texas. Social workers routinely respond to cases of children and teenagers who have self-harmed as they discover their sexual orientations or gender identities are non-heteronormative. Many of these teens do not have supportive parents and are further disempowered by their local communities during these important formative years. In short, kids were wanting to kill themselves for being gay, queer, or questioning their identities. These are many of our stories. That was Joshua's story too. Something had to change. This book was written in hopes that future generations won't live in a world where these stories need to be told anymore. It is the author's intention that each reader will walk away from this story with the same self-confidence, love, and acceptance written within these pages. One day we will be able to write new stories void of systemic or religious oppression. Until then we must each become a change agent for the greater good of all humans. Joshua broke the Violent Fetters and walked into living exactly as we are all meant to live: free, empathetic, joyful, connected to Earth, and with hopeful empowerment for all humankind.
