"Says, --that you savour too much of your youth; And bids you be advis'd, there's nought in France That can be with a nimble galliard won." K. Henry V., Act I., Sc. 2. On the last day of last August, I awakened Paul Morphy at an early hour. The Folkestone train left London Bridge at 9 55 A.m., and there were some twenty minutes of hard driving to get to the railway station; but Morphy came down to breakfast with admirable sang froid, took his own time at the meal, laughed at my fears of being too late, and got into a cab at least ten minutes later than we ought to have done. We arrived at the depot in time to see the doors shut in our faces. Now this was not agreeable, inasmuch as there was no other train for Paris, by that line, during the day. I therefore proposed to Morphy that we should stroll about until half-past one o'clock in the afternoon, and then take the route through Dover and Calais, to which he assented. Some of my readers may object to such an observation; but those who know Morphy, know that he speaks from thorough acquaintance with his opponent's capabilities, and conviction of his own superiority--not from any improper feeling of pride. People suffering from sea-sickness generally recognize the truth of the maxim, "It is better to give than to receive: " you have much difficulty in getting...

By his teenage years Morphy has beaten America's number one player, Louis Paulson, in a highly publicized blindfold match. He took off to Europe in order to challenge Howard Staunton, leading European player, but when he arrived, Staunton avoided the match. Edge follows Morphy across Western Europe as he challenges some of the best chess players of the time and beats them often blindfolded. Technique, strategy, tactics, knowledge which is inconceivable for us; all that was possessed by Morphy fifty-four years ago. - Jose R. Capablanca Paul Charles Morphy (June 22, 1837 - July 10, 1884), an American chess player, is considered to have been the greatest chess master of his era. This book unveils the life of this chess prodigy, knew as "The Pride and Sorrow of Chess" because he had a brilliant chess career but retired from the game while still young. Garry Kasparov maintained that Morphy can be considered both the "forefather of modern chess" and "the first swallow - the prototype of the strong 20th century grandmaster."
