Book Equilibrium and Disequilibrium in Economic Theory

Download or read book Equilibrium and Disequilibrium in Economic Theory written by G. Schwödiauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a conference held at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Vienna. There is still a gap reflected both in fundamental meth odological differences and in the style of analysis between the Walrasian (and Edgeworthian) tradition of general equilibrium theory and the theo retical and policy problems raised in the framework of Keynesian and post-Keynesian macroeconomics. The conference succeeded in bringing together economic theorists working in fields ranging from abstract prob lems of mathematical equilibrium analysis to applied macroeconomic theory, and it is hoped that the present volume will contribute to bridging the above-mentioned hiatus. As organizer of the meeting and editor of its proceedings I want to thank the Institute for Advanced Studies for providing facilities and funds. I am also sincerely grateful to all my colleagues from the Institute for their generous help, in particular to Mrs Monika Herkner without whose assistance and organizational talent the conference would certainly not have been the success it in fact - in the opinion of all participants - turned out to have been. Furthermore, I wish to express my gratitude towards all participants in the meeting and contributors to the volume whose patient support of the whole enterprise proved indispensable. To Mrs Elfriede Auracher I am deeply indebted for her skillful and effective general management of the editorial work and her invaluable assistance in compiling the indexes.

Book The Invisible Hand

Download or read book The Invisible Hand written by Bruna Ingrao and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1990 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the fundamental theoretical underpinnings of modern economies examines how economists define and categorize the market. It suggests that modeling a social science such as economics on the physical/mathematical sciences has created intractable problems, and that the basic structure of the theory needs rethinking.A meticulously researched work in the field of mathematical economics and pure theory, The Invisible Hand traces the evolution of general economic equilibrium theory in its rich interaction with the physical sciences over a period of more than 150 years. The authors discuss how the "invisible hand" that balances physical processes was inspiration and model for the creation of general economic equilibrium theory.Ingrao and Israel review fundamental concepts of the theory, showing how its early forms, strictly analogous to mechanical equilibrium, arose from the cultural atmosphere generated by Newtonianism and the French Enlightenment. They describe developments and changes in the theory from the work of Leon Walras and Vilfredo Pareto through restructuring by the Vienna group and John Von Neumann and the contributions of the Robbins group at the London School of Economics, to its current formulations in the work of Irving Fisher, Paul Samuelson, Kenneth Arrow, and Gerard Debreu.Concluding chapters survey the results obtained in attempts to deal with questions of the existence of equilibrium, its uniqueness, and the problem of global stability. Ingrao and Israel find that the theory has arrived at a dead end, which raises serious doubts about the internal consistency of the basic model.Bruna Ingrao is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Sassari and Giorgio Israel is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Rome.

Book The MIT Dictionary of Modern Economics fourth edition

Download or read book The MIT Dictionary of Modern Economics fourth edition written by David W. Pearce and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992-08-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: an up-to-date authoritative reference designed primarily for students of economics but invaluable also to students of business and other social sciences and ideal for anyone who wants a brief explanation of an economic concept or institution The MIT Dictionary of Modern Economics is an up-to-date, authoritative reference designed primarily for students of business and other social sciences and ideal for anyone who wants a brief explanation of an economic concept or institution. In this fourth edition one entry in ten has been revised and one entry in twenty is new. Whereas the third edition increased the coverage of American institutions, this edition breaks new ground by including entries considered important from an Eastern European perspective. It also supplies comparative statistics on major economic variables for selected countries, describes the origins of widely used acronyms, and includes bibliographic references at the end of featured entries. The dictionary answers in a clear and concise way the enduring questions, which economists have considered for two centuries or more, as well as the issues of the moment, such as economic change in Europe, the problems of pollution, or the prospects for greater freedom of trade. With close to 2,800 entries it is comprehensive in its coverage of theory, national and international institutions, schools of thought, and important economists, including recent Nobel Prize winners. The dictionary was compiled initially by an experienced team of economists at Aberdeen University in the United Kingdom, and new authors have been recruited to provide international expertise, reflecting changes in the structure of the international economy. This fourth edition was prepared by John Cairns, Robert Elliott, Ian McAvinchey, and Robert Shaw, all of the Economics Department, University of Aberdeen.

Book Samuelson and Neoclassical Economics

Download or read book Samuelson and Neoclassical Economics written by G. Feiwel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a festschrift, but a study of the prodigious Samuelson phe nomenon, his history-making contributions to and impact on the econom ics of our age, and the intricate, often perplexing, and divergent trends in modern economics - all intensely controversial subjects that will be argued, scrutinized, and periodically reassessed by economists of various strands and traditions for years to come, for, as Samuelson wrote of Pigou, "immortality does have its price. " A scholar with such an out standing body of contributions "must expect other men to swarm about it" (1966, p. 1233), subject it to scholarly scrutiny, and challenge it. Although Paul Samuelson was 65 on May 15, 1980 (and our best wishes go out to him for long life and continued enrichment of economics), this is neither a birthday party nor a gathering of only the Good Fairies, for, as he himself has said of Marx, "a great scholar deserves the compliment of being judged seriously" and critically (1972, p. 268). In accordance with the rule of Roman law, audiatur et altera pars, I have invited representative scholars of widely divergent perceptions to offer their critical evaluation of the "age of Samuelson. " While the response was by and large gratifying, some scholars were unable to meet the deadline, ix x PREFACE and with much compunction I have had to expand my own essays to partly fill the gaps.
