Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There exist numerous free-standing figurative sculptures produced in Java between the eighth and fifteenth centuries whose dress display detailed textile patterns. This surviving body of sculpture, carved in stone and cast in metal, varying in both size and condition, remains in archaeological sites and museums in Indonesia and worldwide. The equatorial climate of Java has precluded any textiles from this period surviving. Therefore this book argues the textiles represented on these sculptures offer a unique insight into the patterned splendour of the textiles in circulation during this period. This volume contributes to our knowledge of the textiles in circulation at that time by including the first comprehensive record of this body of sculpture, together with the textile patterns classified into a typology of styles within each chapter.

Book Huck Lace Weaving Patterns with Color and Weave Effects

Download or read book Huck Lace Weaving Patterns with Color and Weave Effects written by Tom Knisely and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join expert weaver and teacher Tom Knisely in his exploration of Huck Lace! "Lace Weaves" are best described as loom controlled warp and weft floats on a Plain Weave ground fabric. The term "Color and Weave Effects" refers to a careful arrangement of light and dark colored threads in the warp and weft that weave into beautiful patterns. Log Cabin is probably the best known color and weave pattern. Combining Huck with Color and Weave orders opened the door to astonishing pattern possibilities. He then came up with four color arrangements: Light and Dark, Complimentary Colors, Monochromatic, and Triadic colors. With 144 patterns and four color themes for each pattern, that's 576 patterns. Each pattern includes the full draft and a woven sample for reference. Tom also includes full details for five projects that are perfect for weaving Huck: dish towels, mug rugs, baby blanket, and two scarves. Huck Lace Weaving Patterns with Color and Weave Effects is an essential resource that you will turn to for inspiration and guidance again and again.

Book Jo o by a Thread

Download or read book Jo o by a Thread written by Roger Mello and published by Elsewhere Editions. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intricate and exquisite tale of how bedtime fears can be transformed into wondrous dreams and magical adventures, by Hans Christian Andersen award–winning Roger Mello As João tucks under a lovingly woven quilt, he asks himself: So it’s just me now? He curls up, getting cozy in bed, and soon the world of his dreams unspools on the page. The blanket in his bed unravels into deep rivers, lakes, valleys, reservoirs, mountain ranges, fishing nets full of tadpoles and gaping holes, until what’s left is just one long thread. When he feels alone and scared in the dark, João “sews words like patchwork” into a new blanket to cover himself up. He weaves the threads of his quilt until they form one long sentence, and soon, the nighttime is peppered with his own silvery, slippery words. Roger Mello draws like a shapeshifter – to look at his illustrations is always to see something you missed before (a stingray, a crescent moon nestled into the palm of João’s hand). His breathtaking line drawings, beaming in white thread against deep red, combined with poetic and bewildered language, make João by a Thread a book to take into bed at the edge of sleep, just before you start to dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers Chinese art during the reign of the Sui and Tang Dynasties during which the various disciplines of plastic and performing arts all entered a stage of unprecedented prosperity and development. It also traces new explorations in calligraphy, painting, and mural art and highlights architectural achievements during the historic period. A General History of Chinese Art comprises six volumes with a total of nine parts spanning from the Prehistoric Era until the 3rd year of Xuantong during the Qing Dynasty (1911). The work provides a comprehensive compilation of in-depth studies of the development of art throughout the subsequent reign of Chinese dynasties and explores the emergence of a wide range of artistic categories such as but not limited to music, dance, acrobatics, singing, story telling, painting, calligraphy, sculpture, architecture, and crafts. Unlike previous reference books, A General History of Chinese Art offers a broader overview of the notion of Chinese art by asserting a more diverse and less material understanding of arts, as has often been the case in Western scholarship.

Book Clothing and Fashion 4 volumes

Download or read book Clothing and Fashion 4 volumes written by José Blanco F. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 1679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique four-volume encyclopedia examines the historical significance of fashion trends, revealing the social and cultural connections of clothing from the precolonial times to the present day. This sweeping overview of fashion and apparel covers several centuries of American history as seen through the lens of the clothes we wear—from the Native American moccasin to Manolo Blahnik's contribution to stiletto heels. Through four detailed volumes, this work delves into what people wore in various periods in our country's past and why—from hand-crafted family garments in the 1600s, to the rough clothing of slaves, to the sophisticated textile designs of the 21st century. More than 100 fashion experts and clothing historians pay tribute to the most notable garments, accessories, and people comprising design and fashion. The four volumes contain more than 800 alphabetical entries, with each volume representing a different era. Content includes fascinating information such as that beginning in 1619 through 1654, every man in Virginia was required to plant a number of mulberry trees to support the silk industry in England; what is known about the clothing of enslaved African Americans; and that there were regulations placed on clothing design during World War II. The set also includes color inserts that better communicate the visual impact of clothing and fashion across eras.

Book Kimono Style Edo Traditions to Modern Design

Download or read book Kimono Style Edo Traditions to Modern Design written by Monika Bincsik and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2022-06-04 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan’s engagement with Western clothing, culture, and art in the mid-nineteenth century transformed the traditional kimono and began a cross-cultural sartorial dialogue that continues to this day. This publication explores the kimono’s fascinating modern history and its notable influence on Western fashion. Initially signaling the wearer’s social position, marital status, age, and wealth, older kimono designs gave way to the demands of modernized and democratized twentieth-century lifestyles as well as the preferences of the emancipated “new woman.” Conversely, inspiration from the kimono’s silhouette liberated Western designers such as Paul Poiret and Madeline Vionnet from traditional European tailoring. Juxtaposing never-before-published Japanese textiles from the John C. Weber Collection with Western couture, this book places the kimono on the stage of global fashion history.
