Book Traditional Preventive Patrol

Download or read book Traditional Preventive Patrol written by University City Science Center and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis of the findings of a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in traditional preventive patrol operational activities of uniformed officers assigned to general patrol duties. The five principal and most commonly accepted goals of patrol -- deterrence, apprehension, provision of non-crime related services, provision of a sense of community security and satisfaction with the police, and recovery of stolen goods -- are identified, and each is examined in terms of the hypotheses and assumptions which link specific patrol activities, tactics, and strategies to goal attainment. Attention is devoted to determining the validity of these hypotheses and assumptions and to the type and quality of the measures of effectiveness which are used to gauge the contribution of various patrol practices to the overall aims of patrol. The report then considers the inputs and processes which comprise preventive patrol: characteristics of patrol personnel, modes of transportation, deployment practices, supervision, and in-service task assignments. Prescriptive statements based on this assessment of the current state of knowledge about patrol conclude this report. The final chapter discusses aspects of patrol most in need of further study and offers some suggestions and lessons concerning the execution of research on patrol. The information and conclusions presented in this report were developed from a review of available literature, reports of projects supported by LEAA and the police foundation, direct contact with all LEAA regional offices, discussions with state planning agency representatives, a survey of some 300 police and sheriffs' departments throughout the country, and 26 site visits.

Book excerpt: This Brief reviews the history of foot patrol and the recent, research-driven resurgence of foot patrol in places such as Philadelphia. It summarizes and critiques existing literature on the subject, examining the efficacy of foot patrol. At the time the Philadelphia Foot Patrol Experiment was published, popular opinion about foot patrol was that it might improve community perception of police and reduce fear of crime, but it did not have a concrete crime prevention benefit. The Philadelphia Experiment represented a major examination of this concept, involving over 200 officers in 60 locations over a two-year period, in some of the highest violent crime areas of Philadelphia. The results suggested that a targeted hot spots-oriented foot patrol strategy did contribute to violent crime reduction. Four years later, the lead author of that seminal experiment explores its findings, together with the findings of the Philadelphia Policing Tactics Experiment, and examines their differences. This work also explores officer experiences with foot patrol. This Brief concludes with policy recommendations about foot patrol, when and how to implement it, and the benefits it can add to a police department. This Brief will be of interest to researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice, particularly with an interest in Police Studies, and related fields such as sociology and public policy. It will also be of interest to practitioners and policy makers interested in evidence-based policing.

Book Investigating Corruption in the Afghan Police Force

Download or read book Investigating Corruption in the Afghan Police Force written by Singh, Danny and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on unprecedented empirical research conducted with lower levels of the Afghan police, this unique study assesses how institutional legacy and external intervention, from countries including the UK and the US, have shaped the structural conditions of corruption in the police force and the state. Taking a social constructivist approach, the book combines an in-depth analysis of internal political, cultural and economic drivers with references to several regime changes affecting policing and security, from the Soviet occupation and Mujahidin militias to Taliban religious police. Crossing disciplinary boundaries, Singh offers an invaluable contribution to the literature and to anti-corruption policy in developing and conflict-affected societies.

Book excerpt: The origins of most of the WestÕs Special Forces can be traced back to the Long Range Desert Group, which operated across the limitless expanses of the Libyan Desert, an area the size of India, during the whole of the Desert War from 1940 to 1943. After the defeat of the Axis in North Africa they adapted to serve in the Mediterranean, the Greek islands, Albania, Yugoslavia and Greece. In the process they became the stuff of legend. The LRDG was the brainchild of Ralph Bagnold, a pre-war desert explorer (featured in fictional terms in The English Patient) who put all of his expertise into the creation of a new and, by the standards of the day, highly unorthodox unit. Conventional tactical thinking shunned the deep heart of the vast desert as it was thought to be a harsh, inhospitable wilderness where British forces could not possibly survive even less operate effectively. Instead, Bagnold and his colleagues created a whole new type of warfare. Using specially adapted vehicles and recruiting only men of the right temperament and high levels of fitness and endurance, the first patrols set out bristling with automatic weapons. The LRDG, in a dark hour, was the force which took the fight to the enemy, roving over the deep desertÑa raiderÕs paradiseÑattacking enemy convoys and outposts, destroying aircraft and supplies, forcing the Axis to expend more and more resources to protect their vulnerable lines. Their work was often dangerous, always taxing, exhausting and uncomfortable. They were a new breed of soldier, and the Axis never managed to field a similar unit. Once the desert war was won they transferred their skills to the Mediterranean sector, retraining as mountain guerrillas, serving in the ill-fated Dodecanese campaign, then in strife-torn Albania, Yugoslavia and Greece, fighting alongside the mercurial partisans. In addition, the LRDG worked alongside the fledgling SAS and established, beyond all doubt, the value of highly trained Special Forces, a legacy which resonates today.
