Book excerpt: This study examines various representations of Tibet in Tibetan and Chinese fiction from the 1980s. With its analysis of some of the first Tibetan short stories published approximately a decade after the end of the Cultural Revolution it greatly contributes to the scholarly research of the rise of modern Tibetan literature. The image of Tibet that appears in the works of Tibetan authors is there compared with the Chinese representations of Tibet from the same period. The analysis is informed by postcolonial theories of literature and is focused mainly on the stereotypes that appear in representation of Tibet both in China and in the west. The primary aim of this study is to examine the influence of such stereotypes on Tibetan literary negoitations of their own newly reshaped identity. Studie se zabývá zobrazování Tibetu v tibetské a čínské literatuře o Tibetu z 80. let 20. století. Prostřednictvím analýzy tibetských povídek vznikajících v době počátečního formování moderní tibetské literatury po skončení kulturní revoluce mapuje samotný vznik moderní literatury v Tibetu. Obraz Tibetu, který se objevuje v dílech tibetských autorů, je zde srovnáván s vyobrazením Tibetu v díle čínských autorů tvořících ve stejném období. Analýza vycházející z postkoloniální teorie literatury se zaměřuje především na stereotypy, jež panují v zobrazování Tibetu jak v Číně, tak na Západě, a klade si za cíl posoudit, nakolik tyto stereotypy ovlivňují vlastní představy autorů o "tibetskosti", a nakolik se odrážejí v nově utvářené moderní tibetské identitě.

Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study to appear in English on the literary, cultural and political roots of modern Tibetan literature. While existing scholarship on modern Tibetan writing takes the 1980s as its point of “birth” and presents this period as marking a “rupture” with traditional forms of literature, this book goes beyond such an interpretation by foregrounding instead the persistence of Tibet’s artistic past and oral traditions in the literary creativity of the present. While acknowledging the innovative features of modern Tibetan literary creation, it draws attention to the hitherto neglected aspects of continuity within the new. This study explores the endurance of genres, styles, concepts, techniques, symbolisms, and idioms derived from Tibet’s rich and diverse oral art forms and textual traditions. It reveals how Tibetan kāvya poetics, the mgur genre, life-writing, the Gesar epic and other modes of oral and literary compositions are referenced and adapted in novel ways within modern Tibetan poetry and fiction. It also brings to prominence the complex and fertile interplay between orality and the Tibetan literary text. Embracing a multidisciplinary approach drawing on theoretical insights in western literary theory and criticism, political studies, sociology, and anthropology, this research shows that, alongside literary and oral continuities, the Tibetan nation proves to be an inevitable attribute of modern Tibetan literature.

Born in 1903 as British troops were preparing to invade his homeland, Gendun Chopel was identified at any early age as the incarnation of a famous lama and became a Buddhist monk, excelling in the debating courtyards of the great monasteries of Tibet. At the age of thirty-one, he gave up his monk’s vows and set off for India, where he would wander, often alone and impoverished, for over a decade. Returning to Tibet, he was arrested by the government of the young Dalai Lama on trumped-up charges of treason, emerging from prison three years later a broken man. He died in 1951 as troops of the People’s Liberation Army marched into Lhasa. The case studies range from political demonstrations and industrial workers’ gatherings to institutions of religious education, minority communities, weddings, and the Internet. In this volume we regard tradition as a practice that needs to be explored in its institutional and interactional context at a particular time, rather than as a reliable guide to the past: tradition can only be judged from the present; it is an interpretative concept, not a descriptive one. While the scholarly debate has so far centered on what tradition entails and what it does not, including the question of invention and ownership, less attention has been devoted to investigating how tradition is enacted, enforced, or motivated – in short, how it ‘gets done.’ In Central Asia, practices of traditionalization are closely related to the transformation of the socialist order and the emergence of highly stratified societies. This volume asks: When does tradition emerge as a line of argumentation, who are the actors invoking it and how is it being (materially) manifested?
