Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patrick Henry In this book, I have tried to embody the chief results derived from a study of all the materials known to me, in print and in manuscript, relating to Patrick Henry, - many of these materials being now used for the first time in any formal presentation of his life. Notwithstanding the great popular interest attaching to the name of Patrick Henry, he has hitherto been the subject of but one memoir founded on original investigation, and that, of course, is the Life by William Wirt. When it is considered, however, that Wirt's book was finished as long ago as the year 1817, - before the time had fairly come for the publication of the correspondence, diaries, personal memoranda, and official records of every sort, illustrating the great period covered by Patrick Henry's career, - it will be easy to infer something as to the quantity and the value of those printed materials bearing upon the subject, which are now to be had by us, but which were not within the reach of Wirt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Patrick Henry The reader has a right to know what degree of credit is due to the following narrative; and it is the object of this preface to give him that satisfaction. It was in the summer of 1805, that the design of writing this biography was first conceived. It was produced by an incident of feeling, which, however it affected the author at the time, might now be thought light and trivial by the reader; and he shall not, therefore, be detained by the recital of it. The author knew nothing of Mr. Henry, personally. He had never seen him; and was of course compelled to rely wholly on the information of others. As soon, therefore, as the design was formed of writing his life, aware of the necessity of losing no time in collecting, from the few remaining contemporaries of Mr. Henry, that personal knowledge of the subject which might ere long be expected to die with them, the author despatched letters to every quarter of the state in which it occurred to him as probable that interesting matter might be found; and he was gratified by the prompt attention which was paid to his inquiries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of American History: Patrick Henry Patrick Henry is in more than in one particular among the most remarkable characters of the Revolutionary period of our country. He is declared by Jefferson to have been "the greatest orator that ever lived," and "the person who, beyond all question, gave the first impulse to the movement which terminated in the Revolution." Whatever exaggeration, if any, may be supposed to have crept into these sweeping statements, it is certain that the merits and services which had power to call them forth from such a quarter must have been of no ordinary kind. Indeed, the accounts that have been transmitted to us of the actual effects of his eloquence upon the minds of his hearers, though resting apparently on the best authority, seem almost fabulous, and certainly surpass any that we have on record of the results produced by the most distinguished orators of ancient or modem Europe. Download or read book Patrick Henry written by William Wirt Henry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patrick Henry: Life, Correspondence and Speeches In preparing his sketch of Patrick Henry, William Wirt, his first biographer, admits that the materials he had been able to collect were "scantly and meagre, and utterly disproportionate to the great fame of Mr. Henry." The author of these volumes can make no such excuse for their deficiencies. He has had access to nearly all of the material used by Mr. Wirt, including most of the communications received from the contemporaries of Mr. Henry, which have been kindly furnished by Dr. William Wirt; and to a mass of matter which it was not the good fortune of Mr. Wirt to examine. A most important part of this additional matter consists of the private papers of Mr. Henry, left at Red Hill, which came into the possession of his youngest son, John Henry, the father of the author. To these, fortunately, has been added a considerable correspondence, gathered from different quarters, which, though far from being complete, throws a flood of light on Mr. Henry's career, and is of great value in estimating the part he bore in the American Revolution, and the important period that followed it. Download or read book Housekeeping in Old Virginia written by Marion Cabell Tyree and published by . This book was released on 1879 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Virginia, or the Old Dominion, as her children delight to call her, has always been famed for the style of her living ... Tearing the glittering arms of King George from their sideboards, and casting them, with their costly plate and jewels, as offerings into the lap of the Continental Congress, they introduced in their homes that new style of living in which, discarding all the showy extravagance of the old, and retaining only its inexpensive graces, they succeeded in perfecting that system which, surviving to this day, has ever been noted for its beautiful and elegant simplicity. This system, which combines the thrifty frugality of New England with the less rigid style of Carolina, has been justly pronounced, by the throngs of admirers who have gathered from all quarters of the Union around the generous boards of her illustrious sons, as the very perfection of domestic art." -- Preface.
