Book Deep Brain Stimulation and Epilepsy

Download or read book Deep Brain Stimulation and Epilepsy written by Hans O. Lüders and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep brain stimulation has been used effectively for many years to treat patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. Now, neurologists and neurosurgeons are using electric pulse generators to block abnormal activity, i.e. epileptic fits. Promising research results indicate that electric pulses implanted deep in the brain can affect neurocircuitry and help stop oncoming seizures. Supplying a solid background on brain stimulation and its application to epilepsy, Deep Brain Stimulation and Epilepsy provides a historical overview, explores pathogenesis of brain stimulation, discusses animal experiments and human studies, and explores future prospects of brain stimulation for epileptic control. The editor and his team of contributors distill information drawn directly from the literature into one convenient resource.

Book Frames of Understanding in Text and Discourse

Download or read book Frames of Understanding in Text and Discourse written by Alexander Ziem and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do words mean? What is the nature of meaning? How can we grasp a word’s meaning? The frame-semantic approach developed in this book offers some well-founded answers to such long-standing, but still controversial issues. Following Charles Fillmore’s definition of frames as both organizers of experience and tools for understanding, the monograph attempts to examine one of the most important concepts of Cognitive Linguistics in more detail. The point of departure is Fillmore’s conception of “frames of understanding” – an approach to (cognitive) semantics that Fillmore developed from 1975 to 1985. The envisaged Understanding Semantics (“U-Semantics”) is a semantic theory sui generis whose significance for linguistic research cannot be overestimated. In addition to its crucial role in the development of the theoretical foundations of U-semantics, corpus-based frame semantics can be applied fruitfully in the investigation of knowledge-building processes in text and discourse.

Book Preventing Boundary Violations in Clinical Practice

Download or read book Preventing Boundary Violations in Clinical Practice written by Thomas G. Gutheil and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when you run into a patient in a public place? How do you respond when a patient suddenly hugs you at the end of a session? Do you accept a gift that a patient brings to make up for causing you some inconvenience? Questions like these—which virtually all clinicians face at one time or another—have serious clinical, ethical, and legal implications. This authoritative, practical book uses compelling case vignettes to show how a wide range of boundary questions arise and can be responsibly resolved as part of the process of therapy. Coverage includes role reversal, gifts, self-disclosure, out-of-office encounters, physical contact, and sexual misconduct. Strategies for preventing boundary violations and managing associated legal risks are highlighted.

Book Framing Big Data

Download or read book Framing Big Data written by Maria Cristina Paganoni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses big data as a socio-technical construct with huge potential for innovation in key sectors such as healthcare, government and business. Big data and its increasingly widespread use in such influential spheres can generate ethically controversial decisions, including questions surrounding privacy, consent and accountability. This book attempts to unpack the epistemological implications of the term ‘big data’, as well as the opportunities and responsibilities which come with it. The author analyses the linguistic texture of the big data narrative in the news media, in healthcare and in EU law on data protection, in order to contribute to its understanding from the critical perspective of language studies. The result is a study which will be of interest to students and scholars working in the digital humanities, corpus linguistics, and discourse studies.
