Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain insight on the nontraditional pathways to a college presidency. Specifically, this inquiry explored the career trajectory of college presidents with experience as a former chief student affairs officer (csao). The population of the study was comprised of 12 presidents from a myriad of four-year colleges and universities across the country. Data was collected primarily through semi-structured interviews and supplemented by the curricula vitae of the participants. Through data analysis, three themes emerged: (1) institutional type and fit, (2) academic profile, and (3) fundraising. Furthermore, participants offered advice for current CSAOs or other student affairs administrators who aspire to become a college or university president. Findings from this study indicated the majority of csao presidents were employed at small to medium-size institutions of higher education with preference given to small, private colleges and universities. Additionally, like most college and university presidents, csao presidents must overcome obstacles as they assume their positions. Faculty skepticism was the most noted obstacle participants encountered. Furthermore, participants advised csao presidential aspirants to actively maintain an academic profile to maintain credibility with the faculty. Last, fundraising experience was considered a necessary skill that csao presidential aspirants should have to become serious contenders for a presidential position. Book excerpt: This narrative inquiry aimed to understand the experiences of college presidents who were first-generation students. Specifically, this study sought to identify the ways first-generation presidents transcended educational and career obstacles, explored their career pathways to the presidency, and recognized the ways first-generation college presidents approached leading institutions of higher education. Harper's (2010) anti-deficit achievement model grounded the study and served to center the research on persistence and resiliency. By participating in narrative interviews, nine college presidents shared accounts of overcoming obstacles and navigating college presidencies. Each individual narrative is presented and analyzed for its own individual themes, followed by thematic analysis across the nine narratives. The distinct themes that emerged from the data included (1) mentors, (2) transcending educational and career obstacles, (3) presidential pathways, and (4) approach as first-generation presidents. Discussion and implications identify the ways the research supports dominant narratives, challenges those narratives, and writes a new narrative for college presidents who were first-generation college students. The research supports that college presidents who come from a first-generation student background are uniquely prepared for the presidency and that they possess a skill-set and demeanor that sets them apart from their non-first-generation peers.

Book excerpt: Seventeen percent of American college and university presidents are classified as a member of a minority racial or ethnic group; African American/Black college and university presidents only make of eight percent of those leaders (American Council on Education, 2017). Recently, historically, white liberal arts colleges (HWLACs) have been leading the charge in diversifying the American college presidency, with at least five new presidents who identify as African American/Black since 2013 (Lewis, 2016). A handful more of African American/Black presidents at HWLACs have since been added and it is important that the stories of current African American/Black college presidents be told in order influence and support future leaders. This study explores the career pathways of eight African American/Black presidents who lead (or have lead) HWLACs. Through their experiences, they offer a glimpse into their rise to the position of president at their respective institutions and the impact race has had on their abilities to lead. Most of the presidents had considerable experience as academicians prior to their appointments while others were prepared through leadership in industry before moving into higher education. Each of the participants held the distinction of being the first of their race to be named president at their respective institution; and some actually, became presidents at more than one institution. Furthermore, the presidents consider their position as a call to service and assume a responsibility to influence future diversity in higher education leadership. Each president's story presents opportunities that can be used to help prepare future leaders through professional development, mentoring relationships, and the improvement of doctoral (and terminal) degree programs.

Book excerpt: Practical solutions for improving higher education opportunities for disadvantaged students Too many disadvantaged college students in America do not complete their coursework or receive any college credential, while others earn degrees or certificates with little labor market value. Large numbers of these students also struggle to pay for college, and some incur debts that they have difficulty repaying. The authors provide a new review of the causes of these problems and offer promising policy solutions. The circumstances affecting disadvantaged students stem both from issues on the individual side, such as weak academic preparation and financial pressures, and from institutional failures. Low-income students disproportionately attend schools that are underfunded and have weak performance incentives, contributing to unsatisfactory outcomes for many students. Some solutions, including better financial aid or academic supports, target individual students. Other solutions, such as stronger linkages between coursework and the labor market and more structured paths through the curriculum, are aimed at institutional reforms. All students, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, also need better and varied pathways both to college and directly to the job market, beginning in high school. We can improve college outcomes, but must also acknowledge that we must make hard choices and face difficult tradeoffs in the process. While no single policy is guaranteed to greatly improve college and career outcomes, implementing a number of evidence-based policies and programs together has the potential to improve these outcomes substantially.
