Book Paths of Wickedness and Crime

Download or read book Paths of Wickedness and Crime written by Mark Galeotti and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were shadows to the Italian Renaissance. Just as art and philosophy were flourishing, so too were darker practices, from murder-for-hire to prostitution. However, despite popular parallels between families like the Borgia and the Medici and the Mafia, there has been little systematic examination of the presence of organised crime in the era. In this short and lively essay, Mark Galeotti rereads and occasionally reinterprets the rich secondary literature to introduce a cast of corrupt princes, bandit chieftains, professional assassins, human traffickers, thugs and conmen and suggest that there were signs of the early beginnings of organised criminality in the towns and cities of late medieval and Renaissance Italy. An historian and political scientist, Mark Galeotti is Professor of Global Affairs at New York University's SCPS Center for Global Affairs.

Book excerpt: The criminal legal system defines and authoritatively enacts the boundaries of permissible and impermissible behaviour, with a focus on that which is prohibited or transgressive. Wickedness and Crime: Laws of Homicide and Malice seeks to expose the ways in which criminal law communicates and sanctions particular models of wickedness. This book illuminates the intimate relationship of crime and definitions of wrongdoing. A central contention of the book is that if a criminal legal system empty of normative content is undesirable and implausible, then we must think critically about the types of models of wickedness that are communicated by criminal legal doctrine. Through historical and contemporary analysis of the legal concept of malice, Penny Crofts examines the types of models of wickedness that are established through criminal legal doctrine. The book draws upon literature, philosophy and jurisprudence to place wickedness at the centre of an account of criminal law. Arguing that the current dominant idea of wickedness communicated in criminal law lacks nuance and clarity, this book examines the implications in terms of the legal subject, social responsibility and the jurisdiction of the legal system. Through historical accounts of malice the book provides resources to enrich a contemporary jurisprudence of blaming. A fascinating contribution to the study of law, this book will interest criminal legal scholars who seek a deeper understanding of the complexity of the relationship between law and morality. The book also provides a resource for legal theorists and philosophers of wickedness, supplying a sustained example and analysis of the implications of types of models of culpability.

Book The Sense and Non Sense of Revolt

Download or read book The Sense and Non Sense of Revolt written by Julia Kristeva and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-26 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguist, psychoanalyst, and cultural theorist, Julia Kristeva is one of the most influential and prolific thinkers of our time. Her writings have broken new ground in the study of the self, the mind, and the ways in which we communicate through language. Her work is unique in that it skillfully brings together psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice, literature, linguistics, and philosophy. In her latest book on the powers and limits of psychoanalysis, Kristeva focuses on an intriguing new dilemma. Freud and psychoanalysis taught us that rebellion is what guarantees our independence and our creative abilities. But in our contemporary "entertainment" culture, is rebellion still a viable option? Is it still possible to build and embrace a counterculture? For whom—and against what—and under what forms? Kristeva illustrates the advances and impasses of rebel culture through the experiences of three twentieth-century writers: the existentialist John Paul Sartre, the surrealist Louis Aragon, and the theorist Roland Barthes. For Kristeva the rebellions championed by these figures—especially the political and seemingly dogmatic political commitments of Aragon and Sartre—strike the post-Cold War reader with a mixture of fascination and rejection. These theorists, according to Kristeva, are involved in a revolution against accepted notions of identity—of one's relation to others. Kristeva places their accomplishments in the context of other revolutionary movements in art, literature, and politics. The book also offers an illuminating discussion of Freud's groundbreaking work on rebellion, focusing on the symbolic function of patricide in his Totem and Taboo and discussing his often neglected vision of language, and underscoring its complex connection to the revolutionary drive.

Book Talking Criminal Justice

Download or read book Talking Criminal Justice written by Michael J Coyle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words we use to talk about justice have an enormous impact on our everyday lives. As the first in-depth, ethnographic study of language, Talking Criminal Justice examines the speech of moral entrepreneurs to illustrate how our justice language encourages social control and punishment. This book highlights how public discourse leaders (from both conservative and liberal sides) guide us toward justice solutions that do not align with our collectively professed value of "equal justice for all" through their language habits. This contextualized study of our justice language demonstrates the concealment of intentions with clever language use which mask justice ideologies that differ greatly from our widely espoused justice values. By the evidence of our own words Talking Criminal Justice shows that we consistently permit and encourage the construction of people in ways which attribute motives that elicit and empower social control and punishment responses, and that make punitive public policy options acceptable. This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with social and criminal justice, language, rhetoric and critical criminology.

Book excerpt: Some Witches have been known to have committed wicked deeds, (even) to cause harm and death. However, as members of a minority sector of society, most Witches simply lead their lives the same as everyone else. And many do a lot of good in their communities. Like the rest of society, there are good ones and bad ones. So, where does that lead us? Perhaps a Witch could be a hero. Perhaps a Priest could be a villain, (aka Child-Molester). I'm not going to judge based on a label...

Book The Biblical Path of Life

Download or read book The Biblical Path of Life written by M. J. Ross and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biblical Path of Life is a study designed to help anyone understand how simply yet intricately the Bible is put together. It is a study for: an individual, a family, a small-group Bible study, or a Sunday School program for all ages. The Bible is the most important thing we can know, and it specifically reveals what God expects from His people. But many can find the Bible difficult to read or understand. Yet in order to know how to live a Christian life that is pleasing to God, we must first understand what His Word says. The Biblical Path of Life Volume 1 is: year one of a three-year study going completely through the Bible Begins with an overview of the Old Testament It is a simple, historical, chronological journey through the Bible It compares Scripture to Scripture The lessons reveal Jesus and how the Bible is applicable to everyday life Learn foundational truths that God showed his people from the beginning of timetruths that you will see echoed and fulfilled by the familiar word of the New Testament. And with these principles of the Bible, you can apply them to your own Christian life and become more like Jesus. M. J. Ross taught the Bible for many years and learned that there were many people who didnt understand Gods Word. This realization was the basis for The Biblical Path of Life. After using this study to teach the Bible, many hearts and lives were changed because of the understanding of how the Bible fits together with a purpose to reveal Jesus. M. J. Ross currently lives in Oklahoma. The Biblical Path of Life is a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to understand or to teach the Bible. Its format makes it easy to know the message of each book of the Bible and how that book fits into the overall theme of scripture. It is without reservation that I recommend this resource for use in any Bible Study setting, particularly in Sunday school and discipleship training. ~ Pastor John Wylie, Rehoboth Baptist Church, Claremore, OK I now understand how the Bible fits together! I have studied through the Bible using this curriculum four times and each time I come to a deeper understanding of the scriptures! ~Mary, Oklahoma This 3-year Bible Study program is a breath of fresh air amidst the typical swirl of Bible stories lacking connection to Gods Word as a whole. My own daughters ages 14 and 12 have gone through the Bible from cover to cover three times (using The Biblical Path of Life). Going through the entire Bible has helped me get out of reading my favorite passages over and over. And now I understand my favorite passages so much better because I understand more how it all connects We see the Lord Jesus everywhere in the Bible! ~Jody, Oklahoma Having grown up in church, traveled, and taught in different churches, I have taught from several different Sunday School curriculums. The Biblical Path of Life has by far been the most in depth and chronologically on track curriculum I have learned and taught from. There is far more knowledge in the material per lesson than any other curriculum I have used. The whole curriculum is Christ centered, a program of study, and simple to use. Designed for the teacher and student to absorb and learn from and is extremely recommended.~ Justin, Oklahoma You will find in this series of Biblical studies the most conservative, literal, deeply foundational truths of the Holy Bible. Our church, Rehoboth Baptist of Claremore, OK has used The Biblical Path of Life studies for the past twelve years for our children and for our Adults for the past seven years bringing our Bible Study program into a Family Bible study for the whole church. I highly recommend this study to bring your Bible Study program together as a family in unity. ~ Wayne Keely, Pastor
