Book Alternative Development Paths

Download or read book Alternative Development Paths written by and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has emerged as a rapidly developing economy in the 21st century. However, to support this growth, India needs to modernize its electricity sector and increase its generating capacity in the coming years. This calls for substantial investment in the sector over the next few decades. The investments must be economically, socially, and culturally consistent with the needs of India. Such investments in the energy sector being long term in nature, appropriate choices must also be made from the perspective of technology and environment This publication focuses on various 'alternatives in development' to ensure future sustainability of India's electricity industry and generate policy options for both developing the power sector and mobilizing foreign resources. It also looks at the critical issue of how India can develop required institutional framework that can promote the modernization of the electricity sector by encouraging endogenous and exogenous sources of funding into specific areas, issues related to technology transfer and sustainable development, the role of donor agencies and climate change funds, etc. A three-pronged research strategy was adopted to untangle the issues facing the electricity sector in India. First, the research team carried out a literature survey covering scientific literature, reports, and policy documents. Second, it studied country-specific cases to understand the lessons learnt from specific outcomes of the work done by other countries. And third, the team interviewed various stakeholders from the private sector, government, multilateral institutions, non-governmental organizations, and academic community. The information thus gathered was finally synthesized and a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis was carried out. This publication, titled Alternate development paths: scope for mobilizing international resources for funding the power sector in India, will be useful to policy-makers, financial analysts, academics, decision-makers in international development agencies, and those interested in India's power sector.

Book The Southern Silk Route

Download or read book The Southern Silk Route written by Lipi Ghosh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Silk Route is the historic route, which runs from China to Myanmar and ends up in Assam. The route has historical importance as it served as a major artery of ancient trade articles. The Southern Silk Route: Historical Links and Contemporary Convergences attempts to sketch out the historical dimensions of the route and shows the contemporary dynamics, both positive and negative. It poses the question how history can extend a lesson in contemporary contexts. The book has two parts- theoretical articles on the route judging from a scholar’s perspective on one hand and explorers’ insight in the practical perspective on the other, thus making it really interesting both for the scholar and the lay reader. Book India s Approach to Border Management

Download or read book India s Approach to Border Management written by Pushpita Das and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances which have shaped India’s approach towards its international borders and the framework it has developed to better manage its borders. The book argues that persistence of various cross-border threats and challenges and an absence of robust intra-regional trade among its neighbouring countries forced India to employ a security-centric and unilateral approach to border management with emphasis on hardening the borders to cross-border trade and travel and keeping the border areas underdeveloped to act as a buffer against external conventional threats. Besides discussing the threats and challenges that India faces along the borders, the book aims to develop an understanding of India’s border management practices by analysing various programmes and initiatives such as the raising of border guarding forces; building of physical and electronic fences; the establishment of modern facilities for smoothening legitimate cross-border travel; the development of the border areas through special programmes; and increasing trade and connectivity as well as other cooperative bilateral mechanisms. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan).

Book Infrastructure of Injustice

Download or read book Infrastructure of Injustice written by Raile Rocky Ziipao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the dynamics of infrastructure development in Northeast India, especially Manipur, from a socio-anthropological perspective. It looks at the pattern and distribution of infrastructure in the region to analyse the impact of education, roads and health care on the livelihoods, ecosystems, governance and social futures of communities. The volume examines the infrastructure deficit in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur, focusing especially on electricity and roads. The author shows how problems arising from poor infrastructure are further complicated on account of corruption, insurgency, ethnic unrest and the politics of marginalisation. Looking at the discourse around development in the northeast, the volume also highlights the structural inequality in Manipur and other states. It further shows how infrastructure development can become a means for enabling trade, creating markets, diluting boundaries between varied ethnic groups and connecting people. This book will be useful for researchers and scholars of development studies, economics, social anthropology, sociology and public policy – particularly those interested in India’s northeast.
