Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of War Wounds The huge numbers in the contending armies cause sudden flooding of the hospitals, especially those near the front, with enormous numbers of the wounded after each drive or assault. Thus a hospital with 300 or 400 beds may suddenly be overwhelmed by 1000 or more cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Treatment of War Wounds

Download or read book The Treatment of War Wounds written by William W. Keen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of War Wounds The speedy exhaustion of the first edition of this little book has necessitated this second edition only about six months after the first was issued. The rapid progress made in the treatment of war wounds through clinical observation, but more especially by the active research work at the front, as well as at base hospitals and laboratories in England, France, and the United States, has been such that this edition is almost a new book, so largely has it been rewritten. The type has been entirely reset. The large space now given to shock, to the Carrel-Dakin and other methods of treatment, to fractures, tetanus, wounds of the head, chest, and joints, to gas gangrene, the Bull-Pritchett serum, orthopedic surgery, etc., will be welcomed, I am sure. The introduction of resumes of some of the more important papers, with appended short bibliographies, which will enable the reader to obtain fuller information, will commend themselves to those who wish for more. Even more fully than before I have had the efficient and welcome aid of experts in various special subjects, to whom my warm thanks are due. Book The Treatment of War Wounds in Graeco Roman Antiquity

Download or read book The Treatment of War Wounds in Graeco Roman Antiquity written by Christine Salazar and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this investigation of the treatment of battle trauma in antiquity, 'treatment' is used in a double sense, both as actual medical treatment and literary 'treatment' in non-medical sources. Part I deals with the practical, medical aspects of the topic: the types of wounds likely to result from a battle, their surgical and pharmacological treatment, the question of medical services in ancient armies, medical terminology and the availability of medical knowledge. Part II discusses the use of scenes of wounding and wound treatment in literature, and Part III is a survey of the archaeological evidence. This is the first monograph to examine the topic in all its different aspects; it should be of interest to classicists, medical historians and military historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bipp Treatment of War Wounds The best manner of accomplishing these ends seemed to be by limiting the informa tion offered to what I knew, and by rejecting any other matter, however interesting it might be. The book is an account of our method of Wound Treatment, and it is so simple that a clever surgeon is unnecessary for the achieve ment of the best results, though a careful one is essential. Book excerpt: The history of warfare and the history of medicine are closely intertwined. War has been an accelerator of advances in medical treatment and surgery. As modern weaponry became more destructive, medicine developed techniques and procedures to deal with the volume and nature of battlefield casualties. Preventative medicine has also increased the effectiveness of fighting forces through improvements in soldiers' health and disease resistance. This book is a collection of chapters by historians, medical practitioners and researchers, former and serving military medical officers, surgeons, nurses and veterans, who explore the impact of war, wounds and trauma through the historical record, reported narratives and personal experiences. The book includes major sections on World War One (including chapters on shell shock and plastic surgery), World War Two (including a chapter on the Nazi death camps), the Vietnam War (including chapters on Agent Orange and sexually transmitted diseases), together with chapters on the Korean War and the current conflict in Afghanistan. In addition, the book includes several personal stories in which veterans describe their experiences of injury and recovery. War Wounds is a truly unique book, which offers considerable insights into an aspect of war that is often mentioned but seldom examined as it is here. Medical professionals, military personnel and the general public will all find it a remarkably revealing read. "Not a book for the squeamish, this publication is impressive." - Glyn Harper, New Zealand Herald

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wounds in War: The Mechanism of Their, Production and Their Treatment Probably no branch of surgery has undergone more important changes, in consequence of the teachings of Lister and of Pasteur, than that of gunshot wounds. As antiseptic methods have, in certain cases, rendered possible the performance of operations on regions of the body hitherto untouched by the civil surgeon, and as they have, in others, enabled him to avoid interference, and warranted him in substituting conservative treatment for the more radical measures of earlier times, so they have, in the treatment of the wounded in war, enabled the military surgeon to save lives and limbs, the latter of which, at all events, would, in the days of Larrey and Guthrie, have been sacrificed without hesitation. At the end of the last century, during the Peninsular War, and even in the Crimea, a gunshot wound of a long bone, and more especially one implicating a large joint, was held to demand immediate amputation. But of late years the employment of antiseptics has so revolutionised the surgery of war that no general rule of this kind is admissible for a moment, and amputations for gunshots are only taken into consideration when the disorganisation of a limb is so extreme that but little of it remains to be preserved by conservative treatment, and when that little is more likely to prove an encumbrance than a help to its possessor if retained by the successful issue of the system applied. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Treatment of War Wounds It was perhaps inevitable that advances should at first be somewhat slow. During the last year or two affairs appear to have progressed more rapidly and satisfactorily, and great improvements have been made in many directions. The early treatment of wounds, the prevention and treatment of shock and collapse, the operative procedures in all types of injury, and many other problems, have received close attention with the result that the advance in these and many other matters has been very marked. Thousands of limbs and lives are now saved which. At the commencement of the war, would have been regarded as irretrievably lost.
