Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches on the Pathology and Treatment of Some of the Most Important Diseases of Women The term "puerperal fever" has been employed for upwards of a century, to designate the most fatal inflammatory disease to which child-bed women are liable. The name is now generally adopted by medical writers, and is considered to be synonymous with the terms, Puerperal Peritonitis, Child-bed Fever, Peritoneal Fever, or the Epidemic Disease of Lying-in Women. The records of medicine afford indubitable evidence, that puerperal or child-bed women have, from the most remote periods of antiquity, been liable to attacks of this destructive affection. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of Women: Including the Diagnosis of Pregnancy The present work, founded on a course of lectures delivered at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, is intended to form an introduction to the study of the diseases peculiar to women. The first and principal part is devoted to the elucidation of the diagnosis of these diseases, including the diagnosis of pregnancy; in the second part of the work the treatment of these diseases is considered. The primary object of the work is to afford increased facilities for diagnosis; and a peculiar arrangement of the subject, adapted for the purpose of carrying out that object in the most efficient manner, has been here followed. It may be necessary to explain why it has been thought advisable to give this great prominence to the question of diagnosis, and why other questions have been made subservient to it. Very little consideration will Show how completely subsidiary to questions of diagnosis are all others likely to present themselves to the student in his early attempts to investigate disease, of whatever kind, and wherever situate. In those admirable lectures on clinical medicine to which it was my privilege to listen, Dr. Walshe quotes the saying of Demosthenes. Book Diseases of Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Women Classic Reprint written by Lawson Tait and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women Concerning some of these diseases I have ventured to advance new views, both of their pathology and their treatment, and towards these criticism may fairly be directed; but I can claim for most of them that they have already been published in the form of occasional papers, and. Have been well received by those whose opinions are of the great est value. My chief Object in this book has been to Offer the results of my own experience in as condensed a form as possible and I have therefore avoided, as far as I could, long quotations, needless references, and detailed accounts of cases. I have also refrained from introducing illustrations of pathological appearances, for I have rarely found them to convey any very intelligible idea of the facts, unless in the form of costly lithographs; and the use of these would have greatly enhanced the cost of the book, without giving a corresponding increase to its value. The chapter on Diseases of the Ovary is an enlargement of my Hastings Essay Of 1873. My heartiest thanks are due to my friend Dr. Hickinbotham for his assistance in seeing the book through the press. Book A Text Book of Diseases of Women

Download or read book A Text Book of Diseases of Women written by Charles Penrose and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-08 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from the Preface--'I have written this book for the medical student. I have attempted to present the best teaching of modern gynecology, untrammelled by antiquated theories or methods of treatment. I have, in most instances, recommended but one plan of treatment for each disease, hoping in this way to avoid confusing the student or the physician who consults the book for practical guidance. I have, as a rule, omitted all facts of anatomy, physiology, and pathology which may be found in the general text-books upon these subjects. Such facts have been mentioned in detail only when it seemed important for the elucidation of the subject, or when there were certain points in the pathology that were peculiar to the diseases under consideration."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: Including Their Pathology, Causation, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment; A Manual for Students and Practitioners IN the following pages I have attempted to present to the student and junior practitioner such an account of the diseases incidental to women as will prove a reliable, practical clinical guide. Those who, from lack of time or opportunity during their stu dent career, neglected to make themselves familiar with a subject which will form a most important item in the daily routine of ordinary practice, may thus be enabled to repair the omission. My endeavor has been to give an impartial account, and if, in dealing with the subject of displacements of the uterus, too much prominence should appear to have been given to their mechanical treatment, it has been in order that the question should be fairly represented, not that the practitioner is recommended to place too great reliance upon mechanical appliances. The task of condensing within the limits of a manual all that has stood the test of time and experience in this specialty, has been a difficult one. Doubtless many omissions will be found. Still, I trust these may be rectified by encouraging the student to investigate the subject of gynecology more exhaustively in larger works. I have to acknowledge my own indebtedness for much valuable information to Dr. Barnes's Clinical History of the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women, Dr. T. Gaillard Thomas's Fracti cal Treatise on the Diseases of Women, and other similar works duly acknowledged in the text. In the execution of this labor, the author has endeavored to discard all sectarianism, to investigate impartially the different systems of me dicine, and to record the well-attested principles and practice of the entire profession, including the application of all such new agents as have stood the test of a thorough clinical experience. Many of the agents recommended in the management of disease are not found in the regular pharmacopoeia, but are fully described by the author in his work upon New School Medicines, as well as by others who have written upon the recent improvements in the materia medica. In the preparation of the work, the author has availed himself, not only of the observations and experience of his predecessors and cc temporaries, but of such additional facts as twenty-five years' ex tensive practice has enabled him to accumulate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters of Diseases of the Ovaries: Translated, by Permission, From Kiwisch's Clinical Lectures on the Special Pathology and Treatment of the Diseases of Women; With Notes and an Appendix on the Operation of Ovariotomy We must not overlook the fact that the small intestine never lies below an ovarian tumour, so that the ovary always occupies the lowermost place in the pelvis a cir camstanes not without importance in operations from the oor of the vagina. The rectum, which even in the normal position is situated very near to the ovaries, especially on the left side, comes in all cases of considerable ovarian enlargement into still closer contact with them, and the freer the tumour is, the more posteriorly it is situated as we have already remarked. It frequently happens, in such cases, that diseased ovaria are found in the space of Douglas between the rectum and uterus, and are placed almost exactly in the median line of the pelvis. Some important pathological phaenomena are produced by this position of the ovaries, which will be afterwards amply treated of. The relation of diseased ovaria to the bladder, the vessels, and the nervous trunks in the pelvis, will also be taken into after consideration. Book Gonorrhea in Women Its Pathology Symptomatology Diagnosis and Treatment Together with a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease W

Download or read book Gonorrhea in Women Its Pathology Symptomatology Diagnosis and Treatment Together with a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease W written by Charles Camblos Norris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gonorrhea in Women: Its Pathology, Symptomatology, Diagnosis, and Treatment; Together With a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease Which Occur in Men, Women and Children In this exceedingly comprehensive volume on gonorrhea Dr. Norris has placed before us, in a most interesting and instructive way, the many phases of this subject. The historic narrative, which leads back to the earliest records of the disease, is intensely entertaining, following as it does the curious and bizarre views expressed in ancient literature regarding the affection up to the description of the remarkable experiment performed by Hunter upon himself, in which he endeavored to show that the specific virus of gonorrhea and that of syphilis were interchangeable. As a result of this remarkable but fallacious experiment Hunters theory of the mutual identity of the two infections was accepted by the profession without further question. In spite of the later and well-sustained dissent by Ricord, this view continued to hold sway, and was not entirely dissipated until the discovery, by Neisser, of the specific microorganism of gonorrhea. This discovery put an end to the long-agitated discussion, and for the first time a scientific foundation was established upon which all modern work along this line has been constructed. One learns from the ancient documents, as set down by Dr. Norris, that the ravages of gonorrhea were recognized, and that strenuous efforts were made, by segregation and other restrictive means, to limit its spread. In the chapter on Bacteriology and the Pathogenesis of Gonorrhea, the author has very clearly described the best cultural and staining methods, and traced the destructive effects of the gonococcus upon the pelvic organs and other tissues of the body. This study is elaborately illustrated from gross and microscopic sections made by Dr. Norris from the extensive collection in the pathologic laboratory of the Gynecologic Department of the University of Pennsylvania. The literature has been carefully compiled, and has been so well digested as to furnish an almost encyclopedic review of all the various aspects and history of the Neisserian infection. In the chapter on Sociology the author has considered the relationship of gonorrhea to sterility and abortion, and has shown the havoc that is wrought in the destruction of the eye-sight of new-born infants as the result of maternal infection. Book The Diagnosis of Diseases of Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Diagnosis of Diseases of Women Classic Reprint written by Palmer Findley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diagnosis of Diseases of Women IT has been the endeavor of the author to write a work on the Diagnosis of Diseases of \vomen that will be equally adapted to the needs of student and practitioner, and in line with the most modern views. The recognition of the pathology of the pelvic organs in large measure constitutes a diagnosis. Because of this fundamental fact the author has deemed it desirable to incorporate a thorough discussion of the morbid anatomy, both macroscopic and micros00pic, and to point out its clinical indications. Special stress has been placed upon the microscopic diagnosis of the various lesions, not alone on account of its scientific interest, but also, and more particularly, because of its great clinical importance. Without the microscope a diagnosis is not always possible. Medical literature in the English language has not hitherto included a work on this subject. In the effort to supply this desideratum the author has aimed to satisfy the requirements of those who have felt the need of more comprehensive and prac tical information than can be given in the general text - books on gynecology. It is hoped that this work will be serviceable to those who do not have access to foreign literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
