Book Soybean Seed Quality and Vigor

Download or read book Soybean Seed Quality and Vigor written by Kimberly A. Cochran and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seedborne pathogens are problematic in all soybean growing areas. Culture dependent methods, the current standard, may only detect a small portion of the microorganisms in a seed lot. Next generation amplicon sequencing of fungal and bacterial DNA revealed over two dozen seedborne microorganisms. Five fungi and bacteria were found using culture methods from the same seed lot.

Book Seed Borne Diseases Objectionable in Seed Production and Their Management

Download or read book Seed Borne Diseases Objectionable in Seed Production and Their Management written by M.S. Bhale and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of an improved agriculture is an indispensable step towards better living standards. It depends upon improved inputs of which seed is the most significant. Seed has always been regarded as the most vital, basic and critical input. Sage Parashara (circa 400 BC) had said, "the origin of plentiful yield is the seed". Today, more than two millennia later, the statement holds true and it will be hold true as long as humans inhabit the earth. Seed health is a priority area in seed production programme. In recent years, the awareness for seed health has increased among the growers, traders, consumers and policy makers. In post -GATT era and with the emergence of WTO concerns regarding the seed health have acquired high importance. In seed production programme, seed certification standards have been worked out. Several diseases have been designated objectionable at field and seed levels. The book provides comprehensive and integrated information on 57 seed-borne diseases covering about 40 major field and vegetable crops. The information is supplemented with about 127 photographs, explanation of technical words in glossary and further readings. The book will be of great help to the people engaged in seed production (fields and vegetable crops), seed certification, agricultural extension workers, field workers and seed industry. It will be of immense use for all the teachers, students and researchers of seed science and technology. Feature: sRole of seed-borne pathogens. Significance of seed health testing. Seed health testing for seed-borne fungal, bacterial, viral and nematode pathogens. Protocols for some common methods employed in seed health testing. Integrated management of seed-borne diseases. Indian seed certification standards for Field and Vegetable crops. Identification and management of objectionable seed-borne diseases. Information on pathogens, location in seeds, disease-cycle and spread, nature, losses, detection techniques and certification standards of 57 seed-borne diseases, supplemented with 127 black and white photographs. Explanation of about 160 technical words in glossary.

Book Principles of Seed Pathology Second Edition

Download or read book Principles of Seed Pathology Second Edition written by V. K. Agarwal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-10-15 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed testing centers exist in almost every country in every corner of the globe. More and more students are enrolling in programs that require knowledge of the complex and fascinating science of seed pathology. The implications of seed pathology for human health remains an important issue. For all of these reasons and more, this book is a necessary and timely reference that covers the full range of related topics, including techniques for detecting and studying microorganisms associated with seeds, their epidemiology, and control. No other book like this exists. Until now, the information has been widely scattered in journals and other sources. This is an excellent new edition - ideal for students and teachers in the agricultural and life sciences; individuals involved in seed certification; members of plant quarantine laboratories; plant pathologists doing research in seed pathology; and producers of planting seeds for the next season's crops. Book Characterization of Soybean Seedborne Fusarium Spp in the State of Kansas USA

Download or read book Characterization of Soybean Seedborne Fusarium Spp in the State of Kansas USA written by Rodrigo Pedrozo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusarium spp. are among the most important pathogen groups on soybeans. However, information regarding this genus on soybean seeds in the state of Kansas remains underexplored. Therefore, the goal of this study was to characterize the identity, frequency, and pathogenicity of soybean seedborne Fusarium spp. in the state of Kansas. For the identification and frequency of seedborne Fusarium spp., culture-dependent (i.e. semi-selective medium) and -independent (i.e. DNA metabarcoding) approaches were used. Also, information regarding the pathogenicity of the most common seedborne Fusarium spp. from soybeans was assessed to better understand their role as soybean pathogens. Overall, eleven Fusarium spp. were identified in this study. Semi-selective media showed that approximately 33% of soybean seed samples were infected with Fusarium spp. Moreover, Fusarium spp. were isolated from seed sampled from 80% of the locations in Kansas. Furthermore, a low incidence of Fusarium spp. was observed within infected seed samples and averaged 2%. Nine Fusarium spp. were found in soybean seeds using the culture-dependent approach. Fusarium semitectum was the most frequent, followed by F. proliferatum and F. verticillioides. Fusarium acuminatum, F. equiseti, F. fujikuroi, F. graminearum, F. oxysporum, and F. thapsinum were found in lower frequencies among naturally infected seeds. DNA metabarcoding experiments showed that Fusarium spp. are more frequent in soybean seeds than previously known. All asymptomatic soybean seeds analyzed, using Illumina MiSeq platform, showed the presence of the genus Fusarium including two pathogenic species, F. proliferatum and F. thapsinum. Fusarium acuminatum, F. merismoides, F. solani, F. semitectum, and Fusarium sp. were also identified using the culture-independent approach. Preliminary results also showed that F. proliferatum and F. thapsinum were observed in all three major soybean seed tissues: seed coat, cotyledons, and the embryo axis. Depending on the soybean genotype, inoculum potential and aggressiveness, F. proliferatum, F. graminearum, F. fujikuroi, F. oxysporum, F. semitectum, F. thapsinum, and F. verticillioides were pathogenic to soybean and negatively affect soybean seed quality, at different levels, in controlled conditions. Moreover, F. equiseti and F. acuminatum did not cause significant damage to soybean seeds and seedlings. Understanding seedborne Fusarium spp. and their influence on soybean seed and seedling diseases is critical for the development of effective disease control strategies, especially regarding early detection of pathogenic strains in seeds (i.e., seed health testing), ensuring the crop productivity, quality, and safety.
