Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patchwork Such volumes are generally a miscellaneous gathering of fragments, which the editor fancies, in a vague sort of way, will be amusing or edifying to the general public. Now as my detached pieces were brought together with no idea of pleasing anybody but myself, I hope they will have a more individual flavour, and so, in some measure, escape this very serious charge. Book Patchwork Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Patchwork Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Basil Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patchwork, Vol. 1 of 3 When this work was nearly ready for publication, it became necessary to decide upon a Title; but this, which at first sight may seem a very easy matter, proved not a little embarrassing. There were, it is true, innumerable titles for me to choose from, and sufficiently descriptive of the work; but every one of these had been worn so utterly threadbare, as to be quite useless, or worse than useless - hurtful. After much consideration, it occurred to me that the term Patchwork would not only describe the book correctly, but would carry with it, so far as I knew, the merit of novelty. On propounding this idea to my Publisher, he opposed it stoutly, and even stated in round terms that such an appellation would inevitably "damn the work," - alleging, among other reasons, that the word was associated only with beggars and bed-covers. Book The Patchwork Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Patchwork Papers Classic Reprint written by E. Temple Thurston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patchwork Papers My Dear Norman, Here are my Patchwork Papers for you to unpick at your leisure. I have not presumed to call them essays, since it is nowadays unseemly for a novelist to attempt anything worthy of the name of letters - moreover, would any one read them? By the same token, I have not dared to call them short stories, and that, mainly because the so-called essential love interest is conspicuous by its absence. Really they are illustrated essays. What better name then than papers can be given them? It may, for example, be pardonable in a paper to split an infinitive for the sake of euphony, as I have done in "From my Portfolio," - but to split an infinitive in an essay! It were better to rob a church, or speak out one's mind about the monarchy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patchwork, Vol. 3 of 3 At the best hotel in and in the best room - for we had all to ourselves to choose from - the furniture consisted of two broken-down bedsteads, without a trace of posts or curtains - three chairs, one deal table three feet in diameter, sashes without glass, and floors without mat or carpet. For tunately we had taken the precaution of bringing an iron bedstead and mosquito curtains, not to mention sheets sewed into the form of a bag, which is the only barrier against the nocturnal enemy so prevalent in Sicily. For the rest, the profound stillness of the country village proved a delicious contrast to the uproar of Catania; though the sound of the bells of Santa Agatha still rung in our ears. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patchwork Comedy The supper-room of the Tobacco Club was unusually empty, not more than five men, one of them a servant, occupying it; yet the hour was just on midnight of a fine May evening, many of the members were in town, and the night such as would attract most men from their beds. The premises of the Club are in Queen Anne's Gate, a small house, quiet and unobtrusive, having a fine Georgian doorway upon the street, a pair of ancient link-extinguishers flanking the entrance and giving a certain air of respectability to the building, and from the back windows, a pleasant view over Bird Cage Walk and St. James's Park. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patchwork Girl of Oz Now, it wasn't likely that Dorothy would be looking for wireless messages or would heed the call; but one thing the Historian was sure of, and that was that the powerful Sorcer ess, Glinda, would know what he was doing and that he desired to communicate with Dorothy. For Glinda has a big book in which is recorded every event that takes place any where in the world, just the moment that it happens, and so of course the book would tell her about the wireless message. And that was the way Dorothy heard that the Historian wanted to speak with her, and there was a Shaggy Man in the Land of Oz who knew how to telegraph a wireless reply. The result was that the Historian begged so hard to be told the latest news of Oz, so that he could write it down for the chil dren to read, that Dorothy asked permission of Ozma and Ozma graciously consented. That is why, after two long years of waiting, another Oz story is now presented to the children of America. This would not have been possible had not some clever man invented the wireless and an equally clever child suggested the idea of reaching the mysterious Land of Oz by its means. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Partingtonian Patchwork, Blifkins the Martyr The great fire which destroyed the business-por tion of Boston spared, for the benefit of the world, a few sheets of Mrs. Partington's new book, ' and the plates; upon which the publishers congratulated them selves, and the expectant public took heart. Ar rangements were made to reproduce the work in season for the holidays: but the second fire, at Rand, Avery, Co.'s, swept away both sheets and plates; and expectations, like those of the wicked, were cut Off. The book at this time makes a fresh appeal, trusting that the interest has not abated, and that the present issue may be spared any more fiery trial than the kind stricture of friends, or the honest opinions of critics.
