Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, ISHS Certificate of Excellence, 2016 In the late 1850s and early 1860s, the attention of the Catholic and Protestant religious communities around the world focused on a few small settlements of French Canadian immigrants in northeastern Illinois. Soon after arriving in their new home, a large number of these immigrants, led by Father Charles Chiniquy, the charismatic Catholic priest who had brought them there, converted to Protestantism. In this anthropological history, Caroline B. Brettell explores how Father Chiniquy took on both the sacred and the secular authority of the Catholic Church to engineer the religious schism and how the legacy of this rift affected the lives of the immigrants and their descendants for generations. This intriguing study of a nineteenth-century migration of French Canadians to the American Midwest offers an innovative perspective on the immigrant experience in America. Brettell chronicles how Chiniquy came to lead approximately one thousand French Canadian families to St. Anne, Illinois, in the early 1850s and how his conflict with the Catholic hierarchy over the ownership and administration of church property, delivery of the mass in French instead of Latin, and access to the Bible by laymen led to his excommunication. Drawing on the concept of social drama—a situation of intensely lived conflict that emerges within social groups—Brettell explains the religious schism in terms of larger ethnic and religious disagreements that were happening elsewhere in the United States and in Canada. Brettell also explores legal disputes, analyzes the reemergence of Catholicism in St. Anne in the first decade of the twentieth century, addresses the legacy of Chiniquy in both the United States and Quebec, and closely examines the French Canadian immigrant communities, focusing on the differences between the people who converted to Protestantism and those who remained Catholic. Occurring when nativism was pervasive and the anti-immigrant Know-Nothing Party was at its height, Chiniquy’s religious schism offers an opportunity to examine a range of important historical and anthropological issues, including immigration, ethnicity, and religion; changes in household and family structure; the ways social identities are constructed and reconstructed through time; and the significance of charismatic leadership in processes of social and religious change. Through its multidisciplinary approach, Brettell’s enlightening study provides a pioneering assessment of larger national tensions and social processes, some of which are still evident in modern immigration to the United States.

Book excerpt: History, travelogue, and memoir combine in this illuminating journey in the footsteps of the great explorer La Salle. This is the extraordinary account of a personal and historical quest in which Philip Marchand retraces the seventeenth-century explorations of La Salle while he searches in the present day for vestiges of France’s lost North American legacy. After he explored the Great Lakes and the entire Mississippi, La Salle was murdered by his own men when he led them on a disastrous mission to Texas. The vast land beyond Quebec that he claimed for France could have become — but for a few twists of history — an alternative North America: a French-speaking, Catholic empire in which native peoples would have played a prominent role. Marchand probes the intriguingly flawed character of La Salle and recounts the astonishing history of the Jesuit missionaries, coureurs de bois, fur traders, and soldiers who followed on his heels, and of the Indian nations with whom they came into contact. He also reports on the survivals of this diaspora from late-night bars, battle reenactments, parish churches, and wayside restaurants from Montreal to Venice, Louisiana. And throughout he draws on memories of his own Catholic childhood in Massachusetts to interpret the lingering attitudes, fears, hopes, and iconography of a people who, more deeply than most, feel the burdens and the ironies of history.

Book excerpt: RADIO REPLIES: VOLUMES 1 TO 3 REVEREND CHARLES MORTIMER CARTY REVEREND LESLIE RUMBLE — A Catholic Classic! — 4,374 Questions and Answers, Over 650,000 Words — Includes an Active Index, Table of Contents and Layered NCX Navigation — Includes Illustrations by Gustave Dore Paperback Editions: Volume 1: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-431-7 Volume 2: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-432-4 Volume 3: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-433-1 A classic of Catholic apologetics, widely considered to be among the most effective and comprehensive defenses of Catholicism ever published. Concise, unflinching and compelling answers to literally thousands of questions regarding the teaching of the Catholic Church. Fathers Rumble (a former Protestant) and Carty have created an indispensable resource for anyone looking to explain the truth of Catholicism to curious non-Catholics. Rev. Dr. Leslie Rumble, M.S.C. was the host of a popular weekly radio show in Australia called “Question Box.” Starting in 1928, he spent five years on air answering questions about faith, religion, and morality from the Catholic perspective. He challenged his audience to challenge him with their hard questions about the Catholic Church. If the Church is to be abused and treated like a criminal, then “she has a right to be heard,” he said. Out of this was born the first edition of “Radio Replies,” published in Australia. Rev. Charles Mortimer Carty was a ‘street preacher’ and host of “Catholic Radio Hour,” broadcast out of St. Paul, Minnesota. “I realized that this priest in Australia was doing exactly the same work I was doing here in St. Paul,” wrote Fr. Carty. And so began a publishing collaboration that led to the phenomenally popular American edition of “Radio Replies,” two subsequent volumes, and over a dozen other publications defending Catholic teaching.
