Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past and Present: Or a Description of Persons and Events Connected With Canadian Methodism for the Last Forty Years About twelve years ago I was in the receipt, monthly, of the Ladies' Repository and Gatherings of the West; and felt myself much interested in the sketchy and memorial part of it. I naturally thought, "Why should not similar memorials be preserved of what God has done by the instrumentality of Methodism in Canada?" During that year, at several intervals of leisure, mostly at night, after being wearied out with severe studies, a few of the following sketches, substantially, were thrown off - although without any definite decision about publication in any form. My occupation of an invalid station, about eight years later, afforded me leisure to add a few more; when all of those which related to deceased persons in my reminiscences, to the number of twenty-six, were given to the public in the columns of the Christian Guardian, over the signature of "A Voice from the Past" - to test what reception matter of that description would receive. So far as I learned any thing about them, they were regarded with some favor. Relief from the full amount of pulpit work, about a year after, by the presence and labors, in my next station, of the Rev. James Caughey, gave me time to retouch them; the rest I had by me; and I then arranged them pretty much in the order they now assume, with the persuasion that some day they might see the light. Mr. C - encouraged me to have them published; still I hesitated, mostly because I thought they would scarcely make a sizable book. This pioneering anthology traces the history of Canadian women in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant traditions from the early days through the 1960s. Seventeen Canadian scholars tell the stories of individuals who have worked in traditional and non-traditional roles, alone and as members of groups, both within and outside church structures. All of the articles present new or little-known material, relating the faith, determination, and inventiveness of women whose experience has so far been overlooked. The volume includes an introductory overview of women's church work as well as a comprehensive bibliography of papers and books published about women in the Christian church in Canada, both in English and French. The incorporation of feminist analysis and an emphasis on gender issues set this collection apart from all other studies of Canadian church history. Book excerpt: The word “Mississauga” is the name British Canadian settlers used for the Ojibwe on the north of Lake Ontario – now the most urbanized region in what is now Canada. The Ojibwe of this area in the early and mid-nineteenth century lived through a time of considerable threat to the survival of the First Nations, as they lost much of their autonomy, and almost all of their traditional territory. Donald B. Smith’s Mississauga Portraits recreates the lives of eight Ojibwe who lived during this period – all of whom are historically important and interesting figures, and seven of whom have never before received full biographical treatment. Each portrait is based on research drawn from an extensive collection of writings and recorded speeches by southern Ontario Ojibwe themselves, along with secondary sources. These documents – uncovered over the 40 years that Smith has spent researching and writing about the Ojibwe – represent the richest source of personal First Nations writing in Canada from the mid-nineteenth century. Mississauga Portraits is a sequel to Smith’s immensely popular Sacred Feathers, which provided a detailed biography of Mississauga chief and Methodist minister Peter Jones (1802–1856). The first chapter in Mississauga Portraits on Jones tightly links the two books, which together give readers a vivid composite picture of life in mid-nineteenth-century Aboriginal Canada.
