Book excerpt: Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on: (1) the United States' review process for issuing E- and L-visas to aliens entering the country for business purposes; (2) Japan's visa system; and (3) characteristics of Japanese who obtained E- and L-visas from the United States. GAO found that the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and the U.S. Consulate in Osaka: (1) issued about 9,700 E-visas and 4,000 L-visas to Japanese citizens in fiscal year 1986; (2) had wide latitude in deciding whether to issue visas; (3) refused very few Japanese business visa applications; and (4) in approving visas, relied on information applicants and their companies provided. GAO also found that: (1) the Department of State attempts to maintain flexibility in its visa approval process by specifying factors for consideration, but not their relative weight or emphasis; and (2) of 265 Japanese E- and L-visa holders it studied, most were executives or supervisors with over 10 years of company experience, had annual salaries of over $49,997, and were college graduates. In addition, GAO found that Japan: (1) averaged about 6,390 posting and working visas in the United States; (2) took between several days to several months for its review process; and (3) required companies to meet a minimum gross sale or investment amount for their employees to qualify for visas.

Book Tokyo Underworld

  • Author : Robert Whiting
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2010-09-29
  • ISBN : 0307765172
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Tokyo Underworld written by Robert Whiting and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of the role of Americans in the evolution of the Tokyo underworld in the years since 1945. In the ashes of postwar Japan lay a gold mine for certain opportunistic, expatriate Americans. Addicted to the volatile energy of Tokyo's freewheeling underworld, they formed ever-shifting but ever-profitable alliances with warring Japanese and Korean gangsters. At the center of this world was Nick Zappetti, an ex-marine from New York City who arrived in Tokyo in 1945, and whose restaurant soon became the rage throughout the city and the chief watering hole for celebrities, diplomats, sports figures, and mobsters. Tokyo Underworld chronicles the half-century rise and fall of the fortunes of Zappetti and his comrades, drawing parallels to the great shift of wealth from America to Japan in the late 1980s and the changes in Japanese society and U.S.-Japan relations that resulted. In doing so, Whiting exposes Japan's extraordinary "underground empire": a web of powerful alliances among crime bosses, corporate chairmen, leading politicians, and public figures. It is an amazing story told with a galvanizing blend of history and reportage.

Book Illicit Flirtations

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rhacel Salazar Parreñas
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2011-09-12
  • ISBN : 0804778167
  • Pages : 508 pages

Download or read book Illicit Flirtations written by Rhacel Salazar Parreñas and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “excellent” ethnography that “reveal[s] the global implications of the US morality on international policies and migrant workers” (Cristina Firpo, International Review of Modern Sociology). In 2004, the US State Department declared Filipina hostesses in Japan the largest group of sex trafficked persons in the world. Since receiving this global attention, the number of hostesses entering Japan has dropped by nearly 90 percent. To some, this might suggest a victory for the global anti-trafficking campaign, but Rhacel Parreñas counters that this drastic decline—which stripped thousands of migrants of their livelihoods—is a setback. Parreñas worked alongside hostesses in a working-class club in Tokyo’s red-light district, serving drinks and entertaining her customers. While the common assumption has been that these hostess bars are hotbeds of sexual trafficking, Parreñas quickly discovered a different world of working migrant women, there by choice, and, most importantly, where none were coerced into prostitution. Illicit Flirtations calls into question the US policy to broadly label these women as sex trafficked. It highlights how in imposing top-down legal constraints to solve the perceived problems—including laws that push dependence on migrant brokers and measures that criminalize undocumented migrants—many women become more vulnerable to exploitation, not less. This book gives a long overdue look into the real world of those labeled as trafficked. “A highly readable and informative book.” —Ko-lin Chin, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books “A nuanced portrayal. . . . Scholars and policy-makers should take note.” —Viviana A. Zelizer, Princeton University, author of Purchase of Intimacy and Economic Lives: How Culture Shapes the Economy “An extraordinary book.” —Saskia Sassen, Columbia University, author of A Sociology of Globalization
