Book excerpt: “The definitive source book on acting.”—Los Angeles Times Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Hopper, Robert DeNiro, Marilyn Monroe, and Joanne Woodward—these are only a few of the many actors training in “Method” acting by the great and legendary Lee Strasberg. This revolutionary theory of acting—developed by Stanislavski and continued by Strasberg—has been a major influence on the art of acting in our time. During his last decade, Strasberg devoted himself to a work that would explain once and for all what The Method was and how it worked, as well as telling the story of its development and of the people involved with it. The result is a masterpiece of wisdom and guidance for anyone involved with the theater in any way. “A must for young actors—for old ones, too, for that matter.”—Paul Newman “An exploration of the creative process that will reward all who are interested in the nature of inspiration.”—Library Journal “An important cultural document.”—Booklist

Download or read book Passion in corporate cultures The role of passion in the organisational culture of a Dutch and a German business written by Romy Steinhäuser and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 9, University of Twente , course: Educational Science and Technology/ Human Resource Development, language: English, abstract: The concept of passion is not particularly well researched but has become a hot topic in the academic world in recent years. For, passion offers insight into how people relate to various aspects of their work. The present study aimed to gain a more research-based understanding of the underpinning elements of the concept of passion. By connecting it with theory on corporate cultures it could be investigated how the concept translates in organisational settings as well as which factors actively contribute to its existence and which may hinder it. Also, a new framework was developed, which was based on the notion that human beings are four-dimensional. It argued corporate cultures could be seen as four-dimensional. To test and explore the questions and findings raised in the literature review, a case study research design was chosen. It employed multiple, exploratory research methods such as a so-called preparatory booklet, interviewing, and observations. Overall, two organisations agreed to participate in the study: a Dutch HRD Consultancy firm and a German four-star superior hotel. The study found that passion does not only have a spiritual origin but also that it is commonly triggered through an external event or person. Moreover, it has three distinguishable phases that generate both positive and negative effects. They are influenced by various internal and external factors. Likewise, a new type of passion was found that was referred to as ‘corporate passion’. This underlies similar principles as the individual-based concept but is determined differently and thus has different effects. Finally, various factors were established that either supported or inhibited peoples’ passion. The findings indicate passion is a greatly underestimated concept that does not only generate effects on a personal level but also in organisations as well as beyond (e.g. at clients, with guests). Therefore, it should no longer be asked whether passion is an incorporated element in corporate cultures but how it can be translated into daily practice.

This reflects waning interest among senior executives in the pursuit of short-term shareholder value. As ever students are provided with the guidance they need to strategic planning, analysis of the health services environment (internal and external) and lessons on implementation; with additional discussionssion of organizational capability, deeper treatment of sustainability and corporate social responsibility and more coverageof the sources of organizational inertia and competency traps. This edition is rich in new examples from real-world health care organizations. Chapters are brought to life by the 'Introductory Incidents', 'Learning Objectives', 'Perspectives', 'Strategy Capsules', useful chapter summaries; and questions for class discussion. All cases and examples have been updated or replaced. In this edition the teaching materials and web supplements have been greatly enhanced, with power-point slides, to give lecturers a unique resource.
Download or read book Hume s Critique of Religion Sick Men s Dreams written by Alan Bailey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, authors Alan Bailey and Dan O’Brien examine the full import of David Hume’s arguments and the context of the society in which his work came to fruition. They analyze the nuanced natured of Hume's philosophical discourse and provide an informed look into his position on the possible content and rational justification of religious belief. The authors first detail the pressures and forms of repression that confronted any 18th century thinker wishing to challenge publicly the truth of Christian theism. From there, they offer an overview of Hume's writings on religion, paying particular attention to the inter-relationships between the various works. They show that Hume's writings on religion are best seen as an artfully constructed web of irreligious argument that seeks to push forward a radical outlook, one that only emerges when the attention shifts from the individual sections of the web to its overall structure and context. Even though there is no explicit denial in any of Hume's published writings or private correspondence of the existence of God, the implications of his arguments often seem to point strongly towards atheism. David Hume was one of the leading British critics of Christianity and all forms of religion at a time when public utterances or published writings denying the truth of Christianity were liable to legal prosecution. His philosophical and historical writings offer a sustained and remarkably open critique of religion that is unmatched by any previous author writing in English. Yet, despite Hume’s widespread reputation amongst his contemporaries for extreme irreligion, the subtle and measured manner in which he presents his position means that it remains far from clear how radical his views actually were.
