Book excerpt: In 1955, John D. Rockefeller III convened a committee to respond to post-World War II interest in developing improved understanding of, and relations with, countries in Asia. His family's longstanding interest in Asia had led him to travel in China and Japan after he graduated from university in 1929. The Rockefellers' deeply felt "passion for Asia" led to the founding of the Asia Society in 1956. Today, the need for better understanding of Asian cultures--political, economic, and artistic--is more urgent than ever. This beautifully produced volume reflects in photographs and words the many-sided mission of the Asia Society. Fascinating archival photographs bring the Rockefeller family's travels, philanthropic activities, social occasions, and wonderful domestic interiors to life. The text includes essays by Rockefeller family members; former Asia Society presidents; Peter Johnson, the family historian; Cynthia Altman, curator of Kykuit, the Rockefeller family estate; and Vishakha Desai, president of the Asia Society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This fascinating book is a fundamental contribution to the global history of social science. Tong Lam demonstrates how Chinese reformers struggled to build a modern society on a foundation of facts and statistics. Their ambitions were no mere dream, but were made real in a prodigious social survey movement which aimed as much to enlighten peasants as to inform administrators.” —Theodore Porter, author of Trust in Numbers “Lam’s approach is highly original. A Passion for Facts presents an impressive host of new material from Chinese and American archives that challenges interpretations of China and Chinese exceptionalism or independent development. Lam makes a compelling argument that the techniques developed in the early twentieth century and refined over several decades have been critical to state-building in China.” —James L. Hevia, author of English Lessons: The Pedagogy of Imperialism in Nineteenth Century China “Lam supersedes the current ‘China-centered approach’ and the earlier framework that explained ‘modern China’ in light of global colonialism. He illuminates how the search for ‘facts’ empowered modern Chinese to reimagine their social and political realities in a global colonial context.” —Benjamin A. Elman, Chair, East Asian Studies Department, Princeton University

Book Heteronormativity Passionate Aesthetics and Symbolic Subversion in Asia

Download or read book Heteronormativity Passionate Aesthetics and Symbolic Subversion in Asia written by Saskia E Wieringa and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines life trajectories among three categories of women living beyond the bounds of heteronormativity in Jakarta and Delhi, two major cities with substantively different religious and social values: women who have lost their husbands, either through divorce or death; sex workers; and young, urban lesbians. Delhi has a large Hindu majority and a sizeable Muslim minority, amongst other religious and cultural pluralities. The Indian state is constitutionally committed to secularism and equal respect to all regions despite right-wing Hindu fundamentalism. Jakarta is the capital of a sprawling archipelago with a large variety of ethnic cultures, Indonesia having the largest Muslim population of the world, as well as sizeable ethnic and religious minorities comprising Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and others. The Indonesian state is constitutionally secular, but religion plays a large role in public life and is embedded in regulations that strongly impact people's private lives. Recently, there have been strong political currents to impose stricter Islamic codes. The public arena of sexual politics, in which the media play an important role, is explored in both cities. Hot sex is a major media selling point, particularly in Indonesia. Heteronormativity entails a system of symbolic violence in the sense that it punishes those that it excludes and polices those that it includes; the ways its powers are subverted are likewise symbolic. Passionate aesthetics refers to the dynamics, motivations, codes of behavior and presentation, subjectivities and identities that together make up the complex workings of erotic attraction, sexual relations and partnerships patterns. By charting the lives of women who live beyond the boundaries of the heteronormative, commonalities are revealed; boundaries and regulatory mechanisms in the context of symbolic violence are delineated; and the issue of the struggle for sexual rights for marginalised groups, and their open rebellion, brought to the fore. At the heart of the book lies elaboration of the ways Asian families are constructed -- their social, economic, sexual and religious agency, and how these engage with state-led values.
