Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis will explore leading edge development of the passenger airbag protection devices: a new, multi-patented, dual chambered, airbag cushion. There have been a number of concepts proposed and tested throughout the industry, but none have been able to provide both dynamic and static performances in such a manner in order to meet the safety demands prescribed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With the inability to create a singular cushion which balances both the protection requirements for the belted 5th percentile female (AF05) and those for the unbelted 50th percentile male (AM50), the industry has gone in the direction of a more complex system, which utilizes the conventional singular cushion with an active vent. While this direction has provided a passenger airbag cushion which meets both static and dynamic system performances, it is cost prohibitive and has created a new industry problem: the proper identification and classification of the size of occupant sitting in the passenger's seat. Currently, active vent cushions are designed with consideration for only two distinct occupant sizes, the AF05 and AM50. With these being the only two possible occupant classifications, there is a gray zone with an elevated probability for misclassification of the occupant. This misclassification could result in serious injury. To the occupants or passenger reducing occupant misclassification, and thereby increasing overall occupant safety, is of the utmost importance throughout the automotive industry. For this reason, there is a growing need for the next generation of passenger airbag cushions to be more "self-adaptive". This study will look back at the new dual chambered cushion design concept (patented by the author), which is presented in this thesis. The author will cover the development and evaluation of static and sled testing methods. This is the first "self-adaptive" dual chambered cushion, which not only eliminates the need for an active vent, but eliminates reliance on the identification and classification of occupants. Through physical testing per NHTSA guidelines, this chambered cushion has demonstrated that a singular self-adaptive cushion with the same inflator output is not only achievable, but can outperform current active vent technology cushions in a given vehicle environment. This new chambered cushion allows for the same first and second stage firing times for both the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) belted AF05 and the unbelted AM50. Through physical demonstration and evaluation of the self-adaptive cushion in and out of the known vehicle characteristics, the self-adaptive concept was subjected to dynamic performance testing with an increased vehicle pulse to further demonstrate the robustness of the design.
