The Pensées are made up of some 800 fragments, that have proven to be an enduring masterpiece since their initial publication in 1670. This volume is a translation of Philippe Sellier's edition of Pascal's Pensées, in addition to two shorter texts, the Exchange with M. de Sacy and The Life of Monsieur Pascal by Pascal's sister, Gilberte Périer. In addition to a Preface and an Introduction, there is a comprehensive apparatus criticus. The text was originally produced by a team of international Pascal scholars, who translated individual sections and was revised by the General Editor. The introduction situates the Sellier edition in the history of Pascal scholarship and highlights the advance its reordering of the fragments and of the folders or bundles represents, both the translation itself and the notes allow for a deeper reading of the text. It not only gives English readers a version of the authoritative Sellier edition of the collection of reflections known as The Pensées, it also proposes material which help assess the philosopher's significance and the originality of his thought. On the whole, this translation gives a comprehensive view of the progress of Pascal's intended Apology of the Christian Religion as well as of other writings on related topics. It deals with a common attitude of suspicion towards everyday experience, which theysee as dominated and obscured by sensation, imagination, and the presence of the body. This attitude, however, obliges them to develop detailed and sophisticated accounts of the shaping of experience not only by the body but by interpersonal and social relationships, and of the tension between humannature as it is and as we experience it. The treatment of Descartes thus challenges the interpretation that sees him as eliminating the body from 'subjectivity', while that of Pascal and Malebranche shows how their critical attitude towards experience (a fertile source for twentieth-century Frenchthinkers) is linked with their religious doctrines, especially their Augustinian emphasis on Original Sin.

Book excerpt: “The importance of the doctrine of the three orders for an understanding of the apparent inconsistencies in Pascal’s moral outlook is the central concern of these studies. The three orders form the framework of Pascal’s scale of both ontological and moral values. Since reality is the variable in this scale the content of a given order, taken by itself, is real and has value; but when compared with the content of a higher order it loses both reality and worth. The resulting relativity in judgements of value is illustrated by Pascal’s fluctuating estimate of natural morality. Looked at from a natural point of view acts based on reason have positive value; but when the perspective changes, and the judgement is made from the point of view of the order of charity, all natural behavior seems uniformly worthless. This rejection of reason as criterion, and the denial of moral worth to acts in the natural order, leads to the authoritarian approach to ethics adopted in the Provinciales. Pascal opposes Jesuit moral theology because he believes the Jesuits disregard the qualitative difference between the natural and supernatural orders when they rely on reason as the guide to conduct, and try to accommodate Christian morality to the values of the contemporary nobility. Pascal’s own inconsistency emerges when, after reserving virtue to the supernatural order, he denies man the capacity to make valid moral judgements by himself. This does not prevent him from expecting the individual to make just such an independent judgement by recognizing the authority of Scripture as the criterion in ethics. He also overlooks the problem which arises when terms like justice are used of moral qualities proper to both the natural and supernatural orders. The teleological approach to ethics in the Pensees reinforces the tendency of the three orders to depreciate natural virtue. Since God is the true good or end, relation to which determines moral value, acts are virtuous only when prompted by divine grace. And by emphasizing in his moral judgements the aspect of things as seen from the supernatural order, Pascal makes the pursuit of the true good appear more imperative, since, compared with it, all other goods seem illusory.”- Publisher
