Book excerpt: Parvalbumin is a small (Mr 12,000), acidic (pI 4-5), Ca2+-binding protein of the EF-hand superfamily, that is very important from several points of view. First of all, this protein takes part in Ca2+ regulation of activity of some types of muscle cells, neurons and some other types of cells. At the same time, the exact physiological role of parvalbumin in some of these cells is not clear enough now. Second, parvalbumin has two high affinity Ca2+ binding sites and for this reason it is frequently used as a simple model Ca2+ binding protein. It is convenient for studies of effects of interactions between two calcium binding sites and is very useful for studies of calcium binding effects on interactions of the protein with another proteins, peptides, membranes and low molecular weight organic compounds, which frequently have physiological significance. Third, parvalbumin forms several partially folded intermediate states, which have been studied by many researchers interested in protein folding and stability problems. It is very attractive for studies of the properties and structure of intermediate molten globule-like states. The present book summarises our knowledge on physical, chemical and physiological properties of parvalbumins.

Book excerpt: The idea of Professors Bolis and Gilles to gather together for a 3 days' meeting in the splendid environment of Crans-Montana in Switzerland a limited number of people around the subject of calcium and calcium bind ing proteins seemed at first particularly attractive, and when they asked me to take charge of the scientific organization of the symposium, I accepted with enthusiasm. It rapidly became clear that the major problem would be the selection of the topics, since it was impossible to cover completely and in depth such a broad and dynamic area of research. In our view, one imperative was to associate as intimately as possible the structural and the functional aspects of the areas covered. Apart from one whole day focused on the fascinating roles played by calmodulin in cellular activities, the other sessions were devoted to calmodulin-related calcium binding proteins in muscle and non muscle tissues and to some selected biological systems such as mitochondria, secretory cells or sarcoplasmic reticulum in which calcium also plays a crucial role. The presentations were made by leading investigators in their field. Some of them do not, however, appear in the present volume, for which there are two reasons: first, some of the contributions were somewhat outside the scope of the book; second, three speakers, for valid reasons, simply found no opportunity to write a manuscript in the allotted time.

Four hundred and seventy-two persons participated in this symposium. This large attendance is proof indeed of the growing interest in this field of research. Previous meetings were held in Jablonna, Poland in 1973; Ithaca, New York in 1977, Madison, Wisconsin in 1980; Trieste, Italy in 1983 and in Asilomar, California in 1986. The scientific program of this 1988 meeting included forty-one oral presentations given by invited specialists, ten round table presentations and one hundred and eighty-seven poster presentations. You are not allergic to the entire ragweed plant, the entire dust mite, or the whole cow, just one or more types of allergic molecule within each of those organisms. If you are allergic to a molecule in a dust mite, for example, you might be allergic to shrimp or even tropical fish food. If you are allergic to some pollens, you could also be allergic to nuts, fruits, and some vegetables because they may share those pesky allergenic molecules. Some of these shared allergenic molecules have been identified by scientists, and the reader will benefit by learning where they hide. The readers unexplained reactions could be caused by these cross-reactive molecules. This is a situation where a little bit of knowledge is dangerous because cross-reactivity as it is, often briefly mentioned in magazines, could create fear of foods. Alternatively, knowledge about cross-reactive molecules could uncover these specific allergens. Patients could easily avoid these cross-reactive pollen molecules if they knew they were in their foods, thereby eliminating much suffering from allergy. Why would a patient who tested positive to a pollen eat the same allergens in a food? If they knew about cross-reactivity, they would not. This book explains the allergic response and the many chemicals the body produces in response to an allergic reaction. Allergy is a serious medical condition, and a patient can unintentionally make their allergic reaction much worse by exposure to a similar cross-reactive allergen. Alternatively, in addition to the patients chosen medical treatment, knowing about cross-reactivity can provide the patient with additional self-help.
