Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of great changes and much uncertainty, such as the revival of an active Russia, buoyed by increasing energy wealth, a U.S. mired in Iraq and Afghanistan, rising China and India, as well as Japan moving towards normalization, ASEAN needs to closely monitor great power trends and thinking. This timely and topical book provides insights into various issues high on the regional agenda. The rise of China is closely observed in three chapters in this book. On Russia-ASEAN relations, three authors offer their perspectives. Energy issues are scrutinized. The ongoing efforts to build an East Asian Community are analysed. At a time when Russia has an active profile in Southeast Asia with its arms sales to Indonesia and its nuclear technology assistance to Myanmar, this book offers useful and authoritative discourses on its relations with ASEAN, building on an earlier volume published by ISEAS.

Book The Long Entanglement

Download or read book The Long Entanglement written by Lawrence Kaplan and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1999-03-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fiftieth anniversary of the long entanglement between the United States and NATO is an appropriate occasion to reflect. One of the few NATO studies to concentrate on the history of the alliance, particularly the relationship between its senior partner and its European allies, this study examines critical issues in depth, to uncover the ability of the allies to surmount their internal divisions and to confront their Soviet adversary. While NATO archives are still not fully open, the use of declassified documents from the National Archives and the presidential libraries are of invaluable assistance in considering the historical role of America in the alliance, and the continuing relevance of the organization in U.S. foreign policy. The twelve chapters of this book, provide analyses of important issues in the organization's history, and are connected by brief contexual narratives. The resulting picture depicts a fifty-year history in which the difficulties in arriving at a consensus among the fifteen allies, each understandably concerned with its own national interests, rival those of the alliance in dealing with the Communist threat. The implosion of the Soviet empire in the early 1990s left the organization in search of new reasons for its own existence. While centrifugal forces are arguably greater today than they were during the Cold War, none of the allies seeks to terminate this long entanglement.

Book excerpt: In this dynamic analysis of the gender revolution, authors Anne Breneman and Rebecca Mbuh create a platform for scholars from a variety of cultures to reflect upon their experiences as women and men in gendered cultures and upon their visions of prospects for gender equality and empowerment. Conceived during the United Nation's Fourth World Women's Conference in 1995 and continued during the Beijing +5 conference in 2000, this work represents the culmination of a ten-year project involving women from China, Sweden, Korea, Cameroon, Indonesia, South Africa, and the USA. Organized in five parts—Beginning, Women Awakening, Women Arising, Hazards of Growing up Female, and Reflections and Prospects—Women in the New Millennium includes perspectives in the form of scholarship, historical narratives, and interview materials aimed at contributing to public awareness of the global nature of the gender revolution. With their analyses and examples of the expanding gender revolution, Breneman and Mbuh seek to stimulate an interdisciplinary, international dialogue that leads to the further creation of action plans and will ultimately contribute to the empowerment of women and the equality of women and men in the new millennium.

Book Japan s Foreign Policy 1945 2009

Download or read book Japan s Foreign Policy 1945 2009 written by Kazuhiko Tōgō and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book stands out amongst the crop of textbooks on Japanese foreign policy that have been available to date, because of its authoritative, insider voice. Here we not only learn what happened in postwar Japan's foreign policy, but what the thinking was behind these decisions. This is an invaluable element that brings the reader inside the policy-making rooms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself. In the process, Japan's world view and its own self-image are concurrently revealed, in fascinating and unexpected ways. This book destroys stereotypes, and vastly improves the quality of our understanding of Japan as an international player. We are spoiled by the wisdom and experience of not just one, but three major forces in the shaping of Japan's international existence. Mr Togo's own formidable experience, plus the seminal contributions of his father and grandfather, who was instrumental in the closing phases of World War II. All of this makes this book indispensable to those who wish to truly understand Japan in her own terms, and through her own eyes."---Rikki Kersten, Professor, Modern Japanese Political History, Australian National University "Ambassador Togo's distinctive account of Japanese foreign policy highlights the impact of the vacuum left by the humiliation of defeat in 1945. It bears witness to the intellectual and diplomatic challenge of finding answers to unresolved issues, including managing the U.S. alliance and enhancing cooperation in Asia. Updated to cover the results of the 2009 victory of the Democratic Party of Japan, this book shows how its change of course fits into a long-term narrative. In contrast to more impersonal, often unsympathetic analysis of Western authors and the self-serving writing of many Japanese, Togo offers a guide to Japan's quest, not a defense of its choices. The result is a wide-ranging look at foreign policy over more than 60 years seen from the perspective of an insider attentive to a proud nation's search for its bearings."---Gilbert Rozman, Musgrave Professor of Sociology, Princeton University
