Book excerpt: The current study extends previous research on the implications of romantic partner discrepant alcohol consumption for romantic relationships by (a) examining the associations among alcohol abuse (Daily Drinking Questionnaire), perceptions of partner's alcohol abuse (Adult Behavior Checklist), romantic relationship satisfaction (Relationship Assessment Scale), emotional/verbal aggression and (b) examining these associations using both self-reported (Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory) and observationally assessed (Couple Conflict Interaction Task) emotional/verbal aggression. Data were derived from 258 young adult couples (N=516). Using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model path analysis framework, I found that alcohol abuse and perceptions of partner's alcohol abuse were negatively associated with relationship satisfaction, but only alcohol abuse was positively associated with emotional/verbal aggression. However, results should be considered in light of small effect sizes and limited generalizability. These findings provide a novel contribution by examining perceptions of partner's alcohol abuse and its association with emotional/verbal aggression. Additionally, this study has implications for couple therapy because of the use of multiple methods of measuring aggression.

Book excerpt: Alcohol use among romantic partners is known to be related to a variety of detrimental outcomes, such as decreased relationship satisfaction and increases in conflict. However, discrepant drinking among partners may be a stronger predictor of relationship outcomes over and above the amount of alcohol use. Currently, little is known about potential differences in the within- and between-person effects and discrepancy’s effect on mood, particularly among community samples. The current study investigated the effects of both individual and partner alcohol use, as well as discrepant drinking, on mood and relationship functioning. Data were obtained from 280 heterosexual romantic couples using a measurement burst daily dairy design over the course of one year. Actor Partner Interdependence Model and Dyadic Score Model analyses were used to investigate the effect of alcohol use and discrepant drinking on mood and relationship functioning, both at the within- and between- person levels. Specifically, analyses investigated the effects of no drinking versus moderate drinking, no drinking versus binge drinking, and moderate drinking versus binge drinking. Results revealed that while binge drinking may be related to positive outcomes proximally, the cumulative effects at the between-person level are detrimental. Moreover, discrepant drinking appears most detrimental when women outdrink their partners. These findings have important implications for refining and improving upon couples-based interventions aimed at alcohol-use problems among non-clinical couples.

Book excerpt: Alcohol use is thought to have a range of effects on functioning in romantic relationships, from positive to negative. However, few studies have attempted to explain why and under what circumstances these effects occur, or examined the possibility of bi-directional influences between relationship functioning and alcohol use. The present study sought to address these limitations by examining bi-directional effects of alcohol use and relationship processes in a normal population sample of 81 couples who completed daily reports of both behaviors for a period of about 3 weeks. Results from analyses conducted using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) showed uniformly positive effects of drinking with one's partner, but largely negative effects of drinking and of drinking to intoxication on later relationship functioning. Negative relationship processes also shaped later alcohol use among both men and women. However, interaction analyses showed that these bi-directional effects were more numerous among women than men. Indeed, only women drank in response to feeling disconnected to their partners and only women drank with their partners in what might be considered a strategic effort to regulate relationship dynamics. Overall the results of the current study indicate that the associations between drinking and relationship processes are complex and bi-directional and their importance is perhaps greater for women than men.

The Decline of Substance Use in Young Adulthood examines how the changes in social and religious experiences and in attitudes toward substance use observed among young adults are related to changes in substance use, family transitions, living arrangements, college experience, and employment. The research uses a variety of analysis techniques and is based on the nationwide Monitoring the Future surveys of more than 38,000 young people followed from high school into adulthood. The research covers the last quarter of the 20th century, a period when drug use and views about drugs underwent many important changes. In spite of these shifts, the overall patterns of relationships reported in this book are impressive in their consistency across time and in their general similarity for men and women. Specific questions addressed include the following: *As young adults experience new freedoms and responsibilities, do their attitudes about drugs change? *Do their religious views and behaviors shift? *Do their new freedoms and responsibilities affect the amount of time they spend in social activities, including going to parties and bars? *And how are any of these changes linked to changes in cigarette use, alcohol use, marijuana use, and cocaine use?
