Download or read book Mapping Partition written by Hannah Fitzpatrick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MAPPING PARTITION “A hugely productive partnership between geography and history, ‘Mapping Partition’ does a great service to the field of Partition studies - it leaves us in no doubt about both the long-term cartographical processes that contributed to how South Asia was divided in 1947, and the importance of bringing a geographer’s insights to bear on this complex history of boundary making.” Professor Sarah Ansari, Professor of History (South Asia), Royal Holloway University of London “Fitzpatrick produces spatial readings of partition’s knowledge formations, geopolitical imaginaries, administrative cartography, and legal geographical expertise. These enrich the histories and geographies of partition through painstaking archival, textual, and visual analysis which will resonate far beyond historical geography and South Asian studies.” Professor Stephen Legg, Professor of Historical Geography, University of Nottingham Mapping Partition delivers the first in-depth geographical account of the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. The book explores the impact of colonial geography and geographers on the boundary, both during the partition process and in the period preceding it. Drawing on extensive archival research, Hannah Fitzpatrick argues that colonial geographical knowledge underpinned the partition process in heretofore unacknowledged ways. The author also discusses the consequences of placing different ethnic, communal, and linguistic groups onto the colonial map and the growing importance of majority and minority populations in representative democratic politics. Mapping Partition: Politics, Territory and the End of Empire in India and Pakistan is required reading for students and researchers studying geography, colonial and imperial history, South Asian studies, and interdisciplinary border studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the historian, India's partition and the subsequent birth of Pakistan presents a series of paradoxes: the Muslim League's sudden rise to power from a relatively insignificant position in the pre-1940 period; Jinnah - known to be a staunch believer of secular nationalist principles until the early 1930s - emerging as the major advocate of the Pakistan demand; and finally, the Congress' acceptance of the partition plan with seeming alacrity, thus relinquishing its vaunted principles of national unity.

Download or read book Simulation of Manufacturing Sequences of Functionally Graded Structures written by Gleim, Tobias and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current paper establishes an axisymmetric model for an inductive heating process. Therein, the fully coupled MAXWELL equations, assuming a temperature dependent permeability, are combined with the non-linear heat conduction equation to yield a monolithic solution strategy. The latter is based on a consistent linearization together with a higher order finite element discretization using GALERKIN'S method in space. For the temporal discretization, the generalized Newmark-? methods, higher order RUNGE-KUTTA methods, and discontinuous and continuous GALERKIN methods are used. Furthermore, the residual error is introduced to open an alternative way to obtain a numerically efficient estimation of the time integration accuracy. Simulation results of the electric, magnetic and thermal fields are provided, together with parameter studies concerning spatial discretization, frequency dependence and penetration depth of the heating zone. Another topic analyzed is the residual error and its estimation quality regarding polynomial degree and time step size. A further aspect of this work is the investigation of the thermal fluid-structure interaction with respect to functionally graded materials. Different coupling strategies for the acceleration of the fixed-point iteration in each time step is in the foreground. Relaxation methods as well as extrapolation methods make it possible to significantly reduce the number of fixed point iterations. At the same time, an adaptive strategy with higher order RUNGE-KUTTA methods can provide a further advantage in combination with acceleration methods.
