Book excerpt: "Sit down. I'm going to play a tune for you. Hmm... what about Sebastian Bach? For a year, you've just paid a brief visit twice and it seems to me that you get enough of it. It's okay. I just don't know whether, after this evening, you will come again...." (Partita No. 3 in E for Solo Violin)"A good opening for your new short story," said Anna. "Maybe," I replied. My eyes looked into Anna's blue eyes, penetrating the kitchen wall, passing over the meadow, crossing the river, coming into the forest depth, and seeing the woman...." (One Thousand Seagulls of Narrawa)He did see a pale hand with delicate fingers, dancing in a quiet space, at a cold night, with a little wind. At a glance, gladioli, red roses, and fern leaves had grown into a living painting on a small pot, black, and a parrot was flapping a pair of the dark wings.... (Awake)An army of soldiers was practicing marching with the full force in distance. One could hear someone giving a cue. The marching songs shed those dry season leaves. The telephone was ringing incessantly. I finally struggled to unplug the cord. I stowed away under a dining table.... (Silhouette)"You will die. Somewhere, in the sea. A whale will swallow your body. You will not be reborn, as a better human being, worse, or just average. Not like other living beings, tigers, groupers, or herons, for instance. You have no enemies, but there will be someone loving to hear you dying...." (I Know, I Will Die, in the Sea)He thought the time had come. Some sort of ritual farewells with his life crossed his mind. Crossing his mind to write a long letter (but, to whom?), then having a shower, making a cup of hot coffee milk, playing a song by George Harrison, My Sweet Lord, or writing a poem.... (A Knife) "Please don't laugh, Doc," I struck her first with a serious facial expression and with an Al Pacino's theatrical gesture behind a wooden pulpit when he was starting to give a speech as a New York mayor in front of the Japanese executives in the City Hall.... (An Ulcer)Far below, the cars were crawling slowly. The rain caused a traffic jam. Such a big city disease. People were passing by, bringing umbrellas. They were rushing around, like being chased by something. A group of teenagers offered the rented umbrellas. They walked behind the umbrellas' tenants and let the rain wet their heads, faces and bodies.... (Rendezvous)I almost jumped to immediately open it. I saw him standing with a cheerful smile, a quiet gesture, as usual. And what I always missed: his sullen eyes. A happy smile and a sad look, lips and eyes, so close the distance, so much the difference. Was this man created from the paradox? (Because Rinana is Gone)

Coming like the wind, mercilessly separating the dry leaves of the branches, leaving chaos in his heart. He felt lonely. He read many years ago. Perhaps, in a dime novel. Just like a person with a gloomy heart, he was easily moved by the beautiful words.Actually, those words contained more grief than beauty. But, don't you think that grief gives birth to such beauty? One said that the exquisite flute sound was actually a lamented grief in the past .... Words are meant to be a secret window to understand a person's heart that suddenly appears in someone else's life. As it happened that night...."This book contains 9 selected stories (short-fictions) by Cecep Syamsul Hari, an Indonesian poet and writer; translated from Indonesian into English by Narudin.

Book Marching to the Canon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Scott Messing
  • Publisher : Boydell & Brewer
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 1580464386
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Marching to the Canon written by Scott Messing and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2014 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marching to the Canon examines the history of Schubert's Marche militaire no.1 from its beginnings, through its many arrangements, to its impact on dance, literature, film, and music. Marche militaire is Franz Schubert's most recognizable and beloved instrumental work. Originally published for piano four hands in 1826, this tuneful march -- Schubert's first of three military marches -- was arranged, adapted, and incorporated into new incarnations over the next two centuries. Its success was due to its chameleonlike ability to cross the still-porous borders between canonic and popular repertories, creating a performance life thatmade deep inroads into dance, literature, and film, and inspired quotations or allusions in other music Marching to the Canon examines the history of Schubert's storied Marche militaire from its modest beginnings as aduet published for domestic consumption to its now-ubiquitous presence. After detailing the composition, publication, and reception of the original march, the book analyzes the impact of transcriptions and arrangements for solo piano, orchestra, band, and other settings. In addition, it considers the ways the march was used symbolically, even manipulated, during the Franco-Prussian War and the two world wars, as well as the diverse creative uses of the piece by significant figures as varied as Willa Cather, Isadora Duncan, Walt Disney, and Igor Stravinsky. This study of the reception and impact of the Marche militaire offers a unique narrative illuminating the world that enshrined this remarkable score as one of the most memorable musical works of the nineteenth century. Scott Messing is the Charles A. Dana Professor of Music at Alma College, and the author of two works available from theUniversity of Rochester Press: Neoclassicism in Music and the two-volume Schubert in the European Imagination.

Book Heinrich Schenker and Beethoven s Hammerklavier Sonata

Download or read book Heinrich Schenker and Beethoven s Hammerklavier Sonata written by Nicholas Marston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912 Heinrich Schenker contracted with the Viennese publisher Universal Edition to provide an 'elucidatory edition' (Erl erungsausgabe) of Beethoven's last five piano sonatas. Each publication would comprise a score, newly edited by Schenker and using the composer's autograph manuscript as principal source, together with a substantial commentary combining analytical, text-critical and performance-related matter. Four of the five editions appeared between 1913 and 1921, but that of the 'Hammerklavier' Sonata, op. 106, was never published. It has generally been assumed that this was simply because Schenker was unable to locate the autograph manuscript, which remains missing to this day. But as Nicholas Marston shows in a detailed history of the Erl erungsausgabe project, other factors were involved also, including financial considerations, Schenker's health concerns, and his broader theoretical ambitions. Moreover, despite the missing autograph he nevertheless developed a voice-leading analysis of the complete sonata during the years 1924-1926, a crucial period in the development of his mature theory of tonal music. Marston's book provides the first in-depth study of this rich analysis, which is reproduced in full in high-quality digital images. The book draws on hundreds of letters and documents from Schenker's Nachla it both adds to our biographical knowledge of Schenker and illuminates for the first time the response of this giant of music theory to one of the most significant masterworks in all music.
