Book Particles and Policy

Download or read book Particles and Policy written by Wolfgang Kurt Hermann Panofsky and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Particles and Policy then turns to consider the conflicts between the drives of theoretical science and the constraints of public policy. What are the technical - and social - limits impinging upon the development of electron colliders and other large science projects? Should scientific endeavors be pursued regardless of social costs? Panofsky tackles these questions in several illuminating chapters based upon his long personal experience with linear accelerator projects." "Several essays address Panofsky's lifelong concern with nuclear weapons and arms control. An insider in the government circles that guided policy, Panofsky reveals the way that perceptions, rather than technical realities, drive the arms race; dissects the philosophical underpinnings of nuclear buildup; and shatters the myth that nuclear weapons can be effective in a tactical sense." "In a concluding chapter, "Science Advice to the President," Panofsky looks back on his challenging - and often contentious - years as a member of the President's Science Advisory Committee and delivers suggestions for making such service more effective in the future." "From his early participation in the Trinity Project to his 25-year stewardship of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Wolfgang Panofsky has pursued a rare path of discovery and engagement. Particles and Policy is a bracing anthology of the contributions, challenges, concerns, and successes of this scientist and citizen."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Particle Technology is designed to assist the understanding of how particulate materials behave during processing and is written with engineers and scientists, who are new to the subject, in mind. It is accessible, in both cost and style, and is illustrated with numerous line diagrams. Most of the 16 chapters end with questions in multiple choice format. This helps problem decomposition and the reader can see each step required to arrive at an overall process solution. If the reader makes a mistake with any of the steps he, or she, usually does not see their answer and will immediately know where they have gone wrong. The aspects of Particle Technology covered include: particle characterisation, solid/liquid and solid/gas separations, fluidisation, flow of (and in) dispersions, powder mixing, storage, hazards, crushing and colloidal interaction. Extensive Internet support and referencing is provided. The teaching style adopted is the result of experience gained from presenting the subject for over 30 years at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • Author : Doug Brugge
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-07-26
  • ISBN : 3319895877
  • Pages : 103 pages

Download or read book Particles in the Air written by Doug Brugge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers the three largest sources of particulate matter pollution in five chapters. These sources constitute three of the top ten public health problems in the world today and far outstrip any other environmental health threats in terms of health impact. The book begins with indoor solid fuel combustion for cooking in lower income countries and tells the story of how this problem was identified and recent efforts to eliminate it. The book next looks at tobacco smoking and second hand smoke, again reviewing the history of how these problems were identified scientifically and the fierce industry push back against the science. The last two chapters cover ambient particulate matter in the outdoor air. They address fine and ultrafine particles, describing the pioneering work on fine PM, the subsequent industry attacks on the scientists and then the emerging interest and concern about ultrafine particles, an area of research in which the author has participated. This book is geared towards non-scientists, including high school and college students.

Book Particles and Fundamental Interactions

Download or read book Particles and Fundamental Interactions written by Sylvie Braibant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides theoretical and phenomenological insights on the structure of matter, presenting concepts and features of elementary particle physics and fundamental aspects of nuclear physics. Starting with the basics (nomenclature, classification, acceleration techniques, detection of elementary particles), the properties of fundamental interactions (electromagnetic, weak and strong) are introduced with a mathematical formalism suited to undergraduate students. Some experimental results (the discovery of neutral currents and of the W± and Z0 bosons; the quark structure observed using deep inelastic scattering experiments) show the necessity of an evolution of the formalism. This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book. For example, the CP violation currently measured does not explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the observable universe; the neutrino oscillations and the estimated amount of cosmological dark matter seem to require new physics beyond the Standard Model. A list of other introductory texts, work reviews and some specialized publications is reported in the bibliography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Particles on Surfaces: Detection, Adhesion and Removal held as part of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Fine Particle Society in Santa Clara, California, July 20-25, 1988. The premier symposium on this topic was l organized in 1986 and has been properly chronicled . Based on the success of these two events and the high interest evinced by the technical community, we plan to regularly hold symposia on this topic on a biennial basis and the next one is slated for August 20-24, 1990 in San Diego, California. l As pointed out in the Preface to the first volume , the topic of particles on surfaces is of paramount importance in legion of technological areas. Particularly in the semiconductor device fabrication area, all signals indicate that the understanding of the behavior of particles on surfaces and their removal will attain heightened importance in the times to come. As the device dimensions are shrinking at an accelerated pace, so the benign particles of today will become the killer defects in the not too distant future. The tempo of research and development activity in the field of particles on surfaces is very high, and better and novel ways are continuously being devised to remove smaller and smaller particles.

Download or read book A Palette of Particles written by Jeremy Bernstein and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From molecules to stars, much of the cosmic canvas can be painted in brushstrokes of primary color: the protons, neutrons, and electrons we know so well. But for meticulous detail, we have to dip into exotic hues—leptons, mesons, hadrons, quarks. Bringing particle physics to life as few authors can, Jeremy Bernstein here unveils nature in all its subatomic splendor. In this graceful account, Bernstein guides us through high-energy physics from the early twentieth century to the present, including such highlights as the newly discovered Higgs boson. Beginning with Ernest Rutherford’s 1911 explanation of the nucleus, a model of atomic structure emerged that sufficed until the 1930s, when new particles began to be theorized and experimentally confirmed. In the postwar period, the subatomic world exploded in a blaze of unexpected findings leading to the theory of the quark, in all its strange and charmed variations. An eyewitness to developments at Harvard University and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Bernstein laces his story with piquant anecdotes of such luminaries as Wolfgang Pauli, Murray Gell-Mann, and Sheldon Glashow. Surveying the dizzying landscape of contemporary physics, Bernstein remains optimistic about our ability to comprehend the secrets of the cosmos—even as its mysteries deepen. We now know that over eighty percent of the universe consists of matter we have never identified or detected. A Palette of Particles draws readers into the excitement of a field where the more we discover, the less we seem to know.

Book The two tracks Particle or Wave

Download or read book The two tracks Particle or Wave written by Jan Edvin Andersen and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second in a brand-new revealing series of the new and fully proven 5-dimensional quantum physical universe! The big-bang physics and philosophy are now completely disproved by the particle accelerator, in the absence of alleged particles! The universe has now been proven by scientists and by the particle accelerator down there in Cern! This evidence points only in one direction, towards a universe consisting only of energetic oscillating fields, and a most strange matter, and absolutely no form of physical particles! This book is a sequel to 'Rediscovering the Fifth Dimension'! These two books will explain you the entire new 5-dimensional quantum physical universe, consisting only of energetic oscillating fields and a very wondrous substance! Together, it adds up absolutely everything that we can see, discover and detect! The very active universal engine room, the place where absolutely everything of physical actions unfolds, consists of 5 very active dimensions! Outside, there is what you might call, 'quiet'! Only the deep mysteries of quantum physics can give you the answer to the remaining dimensions besides! All of the active physical actions that only take place in the very active engine room, are quantum physical actions! It is only these 5 quantum physical dimensions that are actually the active universal engine room, and it is only the two outers of these 5 dimensions, that are the driving force of the 5-dimensional very active quantum physical universe! The two most exciting dimensions in the active engine room are the 5th and the 4th dimensions! Therein we find just the right quantum physics and these two books will convince you of that! They just need to be read and understood! The books will explain to you about the real creation of the universe, and will explain to you the real inflation and how it develops! The new expansion law will be explained, something that drives inflation and expansion in the universe! Universal gravity is explained in the first and fundamental book, along with how gravity creates and powers this quantum physical universe! You will be explained how and what atoms basically are, along with the Higgs fields! The Higgs fields are very special! Because the matter is very special in this quantum physical universe, in which there are no forms of 100% physical particles whatsoever! A totally particle-less universe with only energetic oscillating fields and the matter from all the Higgs fields!
